In this episode, we discuss Harry's patronus lessons with Lupin. Gryffindor continues to dominate on the quidditch pitch and Sirius Black breaks into Hogwarts again. The trio go on their Shrieking Shack adventure and Harry tries and fails to protect himself and Sirius from the descending dementors at the lake. Enjoy!

This scene should have the audience hating Sirius and turning on Lupin. We should see the horrible image of Lupin helping up Sirius and hugging him like a brother, but we soon learn the truth. Lupin transforms and the black dog defends the trio. Sirius collapses at the lake and Harry tries to defend him against the hundreds of dementors, but it’s no use.

Of course, we are coming fresh off of our Marauders episode. That one was a whole lot of fun. So I'm really looking forward to the development in dynamics and relationships and all that. I went to Scotland!

So even before our recap, I want to talk about something real quick. So last episode I recorded a few days before I usually did, because I was off on a trip in Scotland. How fun is that? Uh, I am a huge fan of the UK, of the few times I've traveled there. I really enjoyed it, so it was a great pleasure to go back. The reason I'm bringing this up is because, of course, Scotland has a lot to do with Harry Potter, and don't worry, I did not waste any time. I took Harry Potter tours, I went around all these amazing national parks, I saw some amazing nature, and it's funny, one of the things that stood out to me is how normal a lot of things that are in the book actually are in the UK. I personally do not live in the UK year-round, so that kind of structure isn't really uh, you know, it's not something that I I I'm used to. But one of the tours I took in Edinburgh, the capital, was a Harry Potter tour with a man by the name of Rob Carr, who fantastic tour, by the way. I will put a link to that in the uh show notes if you want to take a look. If you're ever in uh Edinburgh, definitely check out Rob Carr tours. He does tours in Edinburgh, he also does tours, actually, by chance, I happened to meet him again when I was off in the Highlands. So he runs some great tours. Definitely check him out. Uh but one of the cool things that he pointed out was one of the so of course the author spent time in Edinburgh while writing the books, and it was really fun on the tour to walk around all these different plaques that were put around different coffee shops. Of course, you saw the uh the the elephant room, the uh famous coffee house where the author wrote uh a lot of her a lot of her story. So it was really interesting to walk around and see how that. And one of the things he pointed out in particular was a s uh one of the schools, a uh private school in Edinburgh that is known for its four house structure, you know, things like that. So things like that, like the four house structure, the the you know, the uniforms and the very like you know, old kind of because that building, the the school building has has very old and there's uh it's it's quite quite a historic place. So it's those little things that really stood out to me that now now so kind of why I want to bring that up now is because especially looking at the trailer and seeing Harry at Rad Muggle School, I'm wondering how we are going to kind of see that translated. Because of course Harry is at a school, you know, Hogwarts is a school, and I think it's easy to forget that it is a school kind of like you know a muggle school in in the UK, because they are the four houses. Like the four houses for for non-UK, you know, people, it is it's like a very magical thing, like the house structure. Like, if I went to a uh a school with houses, like that would be so cool because it's exactly like Hogwarts, but no, it's not really Hogwarts is just following the same structure as many other UK schools. In fact, this particular school in Edinburgh, where the author stayed, you know, from which she was inspired to make Hogwarts a similarly forehoused structure. So it's a it's an interesting thing, but and I'm going in circles here, and I can definitely I definitely know that, but what I what I really want to kind of uh drill down here is that I'm curious to see how the TV show will show us these magical things in the normal world. The fourhouse structure is not a magical thing. Highgort's having history to it is not a magical thing. Being in nature, I mean sure, like that could be you consider that magical, but it's not like it's the only place with nature in the world. So I'm very curious with, you know, the few snippets that we've been hearing of magic taking on a more natural form. I'm curious now what the intersection between the muggle world and the magical world will be. Because even things like the logo, the Harry Potter logo is changing, you know, that is now it r it more resembles a tree. And the the the costumes in the Fighting Harry documentary were a lot of, you know, you know, nature-y things. So we're beginning to see this, and my trip to the UK kind of put that into perspective. That we are really gonna hopefully in this TV show, and what I'm very much hoping for, is that we're gonna truly begin to explore the intersection between the magical and the non-magical, and that is the key for a lot of the story, especially as magic spreads beyond Hogwarts, it spreads into the Muggle world, and it begins to threaten more than just the livelihood of wizards and witches. So it's an interesting thing to consider. It's a very interesting problem that the TV show is gonna have. Is how do you explore that that intersection? But I wanted to bring that up because, first of all, I had a great tour with with Robgar, but also I really enjoyed walking around the city. Of course, I saw uh Victoria Street, which was the inspiration for for Dagon Alley, and it was really, really cool to walk around um Edinburgh Castle and see uh, you know, it would that wasn't the inspiration for Hogwarts, but it definitely has those those kinds of vibes. And I also uh, of course, walking around, I then took a few days up in the highlands, and it was really cool to kind of you know experience the environment of of Hogwarts, and it's strange because it's not exact it's like it isn't quite what I what I was imagining. So I'm also curious if they're gonna include the um Scottish weather, because we might not see the sun very often if that's the case. It was 60 and cloudy basically every day I was there. So I mean I'm not complaining. I must say I am I am a fan of that kind of weather, but it was very interesting. Uh, and of course, there are I mean, it's all nature up there, but the Care Gorbs National Park is is is a big one, and that is, you know, we I've I think I made an episode about that years ago. That that was like, you know, a theory episode. That's how long it was ago. That that was like the location of Ogwards. So anyway, I could talk about this forever, and I even considered making a whole episode about it, but now you have to plow on with with with tea leaves. So I just want to bring that up real quick, but now for real, let's begin breaking down this episode.

Quick recap and Harry and Lupin’s lessons

So, of course, we will begin with a quick recap just so we can get back into the swing of things. So, with episode 336, season three, episode four and five, we began with uh the new uh atmosphere at Hogwarts. Snape took over, defense against the Dark Arts, teaches werewolves, and we had that whole debacle. Then we had the dramatic Gryffindor vs. Hufflepuff Quidditch match, and this is where Harry saw the Grim and then the Dementors, and he fell off his broom. He awoke in the uh in the in the hospital wing, and unfortunately, his firebolt was broken. But the cheer mouth friend George gave him the Marauders maps where Harry had his first trip into Hogsmead, where he unfortunately overheard uh the conversation between McGonagall, Flitwick, Madam Resmerta, Hagrid, and the Minister for Magic uh about his parents, the true nature of Sirius Black's mission in and around Hogwarts. So he is devastated to hear that. We then began episode five back at Hogwarts, but it was in the James and Lily time. So this was this is our, like I said, our our Marauders episode, and this is where we talked a little bit about their past. We followed uh Sirius, Lupin, Peter, and James. We followed the Marauders, you know, through their journey, how James and Lily's relationship bloomed, how Snape and Lily's relationship died, and we followed that all the way out of Hogwarts into the first war, into uh the Secret Keeper swap, and uh eventually Lee and James' death, and then are we our our final few moments were following Peter Pettigrew, seeing his guilt and seeing his eventual escape into the dungeon. So we are not picking off uh, you know, at that point, but it is good context to have because the marauders' relationship is let's just say only getting more complex from here. So that is, I think we can safely say that. But we are beginning episode six with lessons with Harry and Lupin's Patronas lessons. And this is a this is a cool thing. This is this is a very cool thing, and I am very much looking forward to seeing this because I think the way Dementors are portrayed and the way the bog art imitates a dementor. I think there is a really good opportunity here to make something happen. What I mean by that is, and I mean I guess this is this is kind of coming from a place from me personally, of like a bog art, it seems unlikely that a bog art can can so perfectly imitate a a Dementor that it is exactly the same. That seems I mean that seems almost impossible because it's it's kind of it feels like it violates a law of magic. Like the bog art is creating something out of nothing. That's kind of what it feels like. Because if like for for example, if my greatest fear was immense riches and the bog art turned into a pile of gold, could I walk up and pick up the gold? Like you would say no, it's just it's it's it's just an illusion. Like it would either turn back or it'd shrink away, or you couldn't touch it, or something like something like that. Like, of course, it's not actual gold, you couldn't go and spend it somewhere. That's kind of the feel I'm getting here, because if you if you know, with that in mind, if you can't interact, if you can't turn the bog art into whatever you want, of course, you know, whatever you want in in quotation marks being whatever you fear, it would seem ludicrous to me that the bog art could so perfectly imitate a Dementor that it would be the same. That the the effects would be the same, the magical cost would be the same, and that's an interesting point too, because the whole something out of nothing ID, the bog art is still changing it or something. And I mean, for for for that matter, spells, like magic in general, it can't come from nowhere. So that is a rabbit hole we will never see the bottom of I guarantee it. But in this particular uh scenario with the bog art, the boggart is we could assume is drawing power from somewhere, you know, it's not like it is just totally running on infinite cosmic energy. Like it's not, it's it's it's not or you know what? Maybe it is. Who knows? Who knows? I'm gonna guess it's not that though. And the bogart is drawing on some kind of energy, and maybe it you know charges that energy when it's you know staying in a cool dark place. That could be honestly, if if uh new news commander were here, he'd probably agree with me that that's why it likes you know dark and closed spaces, because that's where it can kind of build up and conserve its energy. So when it is is it is faced with some with a person, it can expel that energy in a very violent manner in the form of you know total body transfiguration. So it's a very interesting idea, uh uh the the the bog art. But the reason why I bring that up is because with these lessons that Lupin and Harry are are giving, in the film and frankly in the book too, the bog art was almost the same. Like there was no written, there was no enumerated, uh, you know, there we couldn't distinguish one from the other. And if there was a bog art dementor and a regular Dementor, it would probably be pre uh, you know, fairly similar. But but there is one, you know, there's one, I think it's it's a is it a sentence, is it a word, something like that in the goblet of fire that I want to bring up now that kind of makes kind of a crack in that uh argument here. Because in the maze, there are boggards placed in the maze in the third task of the Tri World Tournament, and Harry encounters one and it turns into a Dementor, and Harry shrinks back, he thinks, oh gosh, this is this is a Dementor. But as it's walking towards him, the reason why he realizes it's a bog art is because the Dementor trips. And Harry thinks, Oh, that's not a d that's not a real Dementor, it's a Bogart. So we can draw a few conclusions from this. One, they look the same. That is something that that that we can definitely have. But the said the the the second conclusion is they are not the same. Because if Harry could see the Dementor, he saw the Dementor trip, meaning that it is walking on the ground and it's somehow maintaining that magical illusion. I think there is definitely something to be had there. And I think that also brings up the question of like, of course, Dementors are floating in the film, and I think they're still floating in the book, but maybe the author imagined a more grounded version because I'm also thinking forward to like uh the especially Order of the Phoenix, and then I mean absolutely uh Deathly Hollows, Dementors are are flying, like they're clearly flying. There's no part of them that's walking on the ground. Because, and honestly, I'm I like that. I'm I like that choice because if they were walking, they'd feel, you know, somehow human, and that might make them honestly even more terrifying if uh you ask me. But I think the fact that it's floating is kind of just this this you know really contributes to the idea of this cold death, this you know, immovable force that no matter how hard you try, it will never stop coming for you. That's kind of the feel that it has when it's when it's floating. So I am a fan of that. So we are analyzing this so deeply because I'm very curious how the TV show is gonna portray that difference. They could very easily just do nothing. And honestly, that's what I'm expecting. With the differences like what we're talking about in the Goblet of Fire with the toll tripping idea, the the bogart's not gonna trip. First of all, that's not even in the book, and second of all, there's no reason for that because the point of this whole sequence is to build the fear of Dementors, and that's kind of the you know, the the trick here is when the Dementor emerges from the box, you know, we we aren't feeling like, you know, we shouldn't be feeling confident, we should be feeling scared. And hey, that's exactly that's exactly what what Harry feels. And of course, he eventually masters the Patronus, but that doesn't mean he's not still afraid of the Dementors, and the more protection he gains against them, the less afraid he becomes. So if we were to portray this less scary version of a uh of a Dementor that Harry could master a defense against of, it's almost like the threat is neutralized. And this is not the right time for that because the Dementor's grand finale is still to come, the lake is still to come. So it's it's almost like we are taking this episode and we are saying, Dementors, dah, and then we're kind of going forward and you know, showing these horrible conflicts with actual Dementors. So I think there is definitely an interesting thing here, and here is here's what I'm thinking. Of course, this is Tea Leaves, this is our version of the of uh of of the TV show, so we have to make sure we actually do it right. If I am the filmmakers, what am I doing with this dementor? Here is what I would do. Don't change anything, you know, it shouldn't have legs, it shouldn't be walking, it shouldn't, you know, be silent, or there shouldn't be some part missing. It should be the full effect of a Dementor, but it should be smaller. That's what I'm thinking. And it seems like such a small thing for a Dementor to just be kind of sized down, so to speak. This this Dementor, you know, you would think, well, it doesn't really make a difference if it's smaller or not. But when I think of a Dementor, I think of the train car. You know, that that segment that we spent like 20 minutes on a few episodes ago when the Dementor entered the Hog the Hogwarts uh Express. That scene, first of all, I think about that scene all the time. I can't wait for that scene. The Dementor, like, when I envision it, I don't see like a head just barely visible, like it's like two feet tall. Like, no. Like, no, of course not. The the two parts of the Dementor that make it so scary. One, I mean, the idea, like its broaded hands are coming towards you. I don't think anything, uh, in a matter of size, nothing would be, you know, comforting if if if that were the case, if there were broad hands reaching towards you, like ready to suck out your soul, like, I'm okay with that, actually. I'm oh I don't have to be involved in that. But the second thing is the size. That's really why dimensions are are are so scary. It's impossibly big. Impossibly big. And it's not only the height, because these things are super tall. It's also the like the um the the mass. These robes are floating everywhere. It's like it's like it's floating in water, like it's so big, it fills the entire space. That's why Dementors are truly scary, because its head, it's like it's brushing the ceiling, it's it's arching down towards you. It's robes are almost like like like there's there's no possible escape. That's what the Dementors are. They are a a feeling of so of such utter hopelessness that the victim couldn't possibly hope to escape. And that's really why Dementors are are so scary. So with these lessons, with Harry and Lupin's lessons, the bogart tripping is, I think, a detail that be sure we could include next season, but what I'm really concerned with is the size. Because now what I'm envisioning is that scene by the lake, and seeing the Dementors swooping down towards Harry, I think the thing that would make them the most scary is first of all the fact that there are hundreds of them, but also that they are huge. It's like it's like a huge bird, like like, you know, it's it's kind of like if you saw a dinosaur. If you saw like a pterodactyl flying towards you, that's kind of the feel. If if a pterodactyl was was tiny, it wouldn't really be the same. But the fact that it's so big, it's this, you know, strange shape, this unfamiliar thing, it's racing towards you. That's the that's kind of the the the feeling here. These dementors are larger than life, they maybe are even larger than death. That's really what I want to convey here. So the lessons are going to take that very shape. And I definitely want uh the uh the memories here. So that's the whole Dementor aspect of it, and boy did I not expect to talk about that for that long. But there are some more parts of these lessons that I want to highlight. One is I'm not a fan of how the films portray Harry kind of like hearing the voice and then falling unconscious. I mean, it's an important detail, it's a very important detail, and I like the sentiment, but I don't think it's quite capturing the feel. Because when Harry sees a Dementor, he hears his mother screaming, he uh he gets flashbacks to the night that Voldemort killed his his parents, and you know, that's that's why he's so vulnerable because he has horrors like that in his past that the others just simply don't. I absolutely want to highlight this. I think I I am one of the the good things about the film is the fact that this is so heavily a part of the lessons. I mean, this is this is really why Harry wanted these lessons, because he does not want to be uh a victim to that. He does not want to be vulnerable to that. Like anytime he is near a Dementor, he automatically hears that because he cannot relive it. He just can't. It is it is such a painful experience for him that he must find a way around it. So that's really why I want this here. But I don't like how the film did it, because it's like it's you know, the camera slurs, like it's like there's blurring and slowing, and and then like it kind of fading to black, and like, yeah, like that's what that is, sure. But I think it's m it's it's it goes a little deeper than that. Because what we really are trying to show is Harry's transition from the reality to memory. That's what I want to highlight the most. I think if we're kind of you know, slowly fading in the black and Harry's falling, like, yeah, like that's what is happening. But we're just watching Harry kind of like fall down. Like that's kind of what we're watching. I mean, falling down is, you know, it's fun. That's that's cool. But what what what I really want is to get inside Harry's head, because I guarantee Harry is having Harry is vividly experiencing this horrible memory. I guarantee he's not just fading to black. Like he isn't just hearing it, he's seeing it too. So that's what I really want to see. I want to have kind of like, if you think all the way back, if you were here for season two, kind of like the riddle memories. That's almost what I'm imagining when thinking of these scenes. When Riddle is showing Harry memory, it's you know, it it's not like a movie is playing. Harry is living this this this memory. And there are fragments and and riddles kind of bringing him around and showing him certain certain parts, but it's almost it's even more fragmented, and that's kind of like what happens. Like when Harry walks into the Chamber of Secrets, this this this you know, the part of Voldemort inside him is kind of like a magnet, like, like, you know, getting so heavily drawn, but so heavily repelled against the actual piece of Voldemort. It creates these like visions, like he's flashing in and out, like he's seeing something. And it's almost like it's, you know, we see something and then it's gone, and it's only after it's gone do we realize that it was perhaps a memory. That's what I want this whole kind of vibe to be. Like Harry's having flashes of memory. Harry's having, you know, of course, because his his reality is fading, his his memory is sharpening. It's almost like he's he's getting drawn out of very deep water. Like he's like breaking this, like he's slowly breaking the surface of of this memory, and he's getting farther and farther from from the like the bottom of the sea from the true reality, you know, from from this crushing weight of reality. He's getting drawn towards this horrible memory. That's what I want. So I want flashes, you know. I want to see him, and then I want to see him in the room. Like, that's what I'm seeing. Like Harry as a 13-year-old standing in the room watching Voldemort walk in, then he's back, he's looking at the Dementor, and then like the the Dementor's holding a wand and casts a spell, and and his mom is standing next to him in the room with Lupin, and the Dementor kills his mom, and and then Voldemort steps over him and he's back in the room. Like, that's that's what I'm imagining here. Like, something that's just like, what is happening? Like, that's what I want to be thinking. Because when I'm watching Harry in this film, you know, going a dark slow-mo fall version, I'm like, just do it. Like, that's that's what I'm feeling. Like, just cast a spell. It's not that hard. Like, he's like, just do it. That's what I'm feeling. But if we have this version in the TV show, that's truly like like we just we just don't know what's happening. It's like Harry, like, he looks down at his hands and he's not he's not holding anything, and then he's holding his wand, then he's holding the sword of Gryffindor, then he's holding the swording hat, then he's holding nothing. Like, it's like his his whole world is kind of bending, like it's just this horrible, horrible experience. And watching something like that, then I could understand, okay, okay, maybe it's not so easy. So that's really what I what I want out of this. But the final part of this whole equation, the reason why I'm spending so much time on this is because of Lupin. That's really one why I I I want to highlight this scene so much. Because though Harry's memory is twisting and turning, though this smaller, albeit very, very scary Dementor is is is uh coming at him, Lupin is there to support him. And that is the most important part of this. Lupin is there, he's helping him, he's taking time out of his very busy schedule. As of course, now, as we know, that's you know, maybe it's almost like I planned having the Marauders episode, and then this this sequence, Lupin is so clearly there for Harry. It's almost like his father, and that's really what I want to kind of be getting at here. It's it's like James from the present is pulling at James from the past, and that is, I think, as literal as we could get with something like that. I mean, Lupin and James are are very similar, and they were such good friends, and they shared such similar values that it's almost impossible to overlook that. It's almost impossible to overlook the fact that James is uh so clearly identified in Lupin. So I think what I really want out of these scenes is seeing, you know, James from the past, seeing Harry dealing with those memories, and then kind of getting wrenched back to the present with Lupin and and you know, kind of living in this, living in this world. So all in all, it is a really, really important whole you know, scene. I I'm not expecting a ton of time here, because of course you know, we have a uh uh, you know, the rest of the episode, so I'm not looking for this to take up a ton of time, but I really want to highlight this moment, super important. It it hits on so many things and it builds on the idea of the Dementors, which I think we should never, ever forget. So uh we are blasting through our time this episode. I am loving it, but we do have a few more things to discuss in this episode, so let's move

Gryffindor vs. Ravenclaw quidditch match

on. Now it is time for the Gryffindor versus Ravenclaw Quidditch match. We have a lot of Quidditch matches in the past few episodes, and we have another one actually coming up, so I'm definitely uh we don't have to spend too much time on this in the actual episode. I think we kind of get the idea. But the most important part of the match is, of course, the Dementor attack because more Dementors have somehow gotten onto the field. Harry sees them, he rips out his wand, he casts a Patronus, it rushes down, and Malfoy is knocked off of Crab's shoulders, and just like that, the first of all, he wins, so he's very happy about that. Um he doesn't see the fact that it is uh Malfoy, Crab and Goyle until it is too late. But he does get the snitch and he wins, and then Lupin goes over and says, Very nice, very nice. I saw that Patronus, and Aaron says, Yes, those those those Dementors didn't even see it coming, and then of course he sees that it is just Malfoy. Quite a funny moment. But I guess I I am looking forward to because this is kind of like the first moment we see the Patronus in action. I am very much looking forward to seeing it. Because it, you know, it's it's a very cool thing, and I think I like how the film does it. I kind of, you know, I I I don't hate that idea, but there's definitely more to be had here. There's there's there's there's definitely more in that, and I'm definitely looking forward to that, especially with the whole idea of nature. You know, how is this gonna work? Is it like gonna be kind of follow the wind, the wind's gonna sweep it up, something like that. I don't know. I don't know how it's how it's gonna work, but I am very much looking forward to it. So that is the uh Gryffindor versus Ravenclaw Quidditch match. So everyone goes back to the dorms, everyone's celebrating, it's amazing. They're celebrating into the night, and then eventually they go, okay, we gotta go to sleep. So everyone goes back to their dorms. Now, here's where I want to pause for a second. As we all know, Sirius Black is about to break back into Hogwarts. Tough timing, because this is gonna be a very, very exciting scene. If you recall, in a previous episode this season, in the first, you know, the quote unquote first break-in, I used the this coming break-in in that you know, point. So what happened in the book after this point is Sirius breaks into the Domeratory holding a knife, Veron sees him, and then Sirius Black escapes. That is what I already did. So we already did that point, and that is for a very specific reason, because I want this to be a little more dramatic. I am looking for something a little more intense with this particular break. And so I just want to make that point and keep in mind we are currently writing new stories. This does not appear in the film, did not appear in the book. So let's go. Everyone is parting, parting, parting, they go back to their dorms, everyone's so tired they fall asleep. And this at this point, something similar happens. Something very similar happens. But this time it happens slowly. We have a shot of Harry. Harry is sleeping in his in his dorm bed. Maybe we see a clock somewhere, somehow we know, like maybe we see like the moon very high in the sky. It is late, you know, or you or it's early. Let's say it's like two in the morning, three in the morning. Like, no, everyone's fast asleep, the partying's over. And this is kind of where I want silence. You know, I want silence, I want to see Harry, and then slowly hear, you know, the dorm door creaking open. It's very quiet, no one hears it. But Harry Harry kind of stirs, you know, and the door stops. Harry's listening. Because he's kind of awake now. He's like, I I thought I heard something, but I mean he's just imagining it because he's so happy off his win, he isn't really paying attention. So he kind of, you know, whatever. And then a few minutes later, the door is kind of creaking open again, and this time Harry is not not so relaxed, but but he's smart here. He is smart because he knows that if he gets up and looks towards the door and sees someone there, they're gonna run. He doesn't want that to happen. So this is a moment where uh albeit rare moment, where Harry is making a v an acute and highly calculated decision. So thank you for this, Harry. Harry doesn't turn, Harry doesn't stir, he listens. Now he is on high alert. Luckily, uh he had the Marauders map and his wand right next to his bed. So as quietly as you can, he reaches out. I mean, he's he's his back is turned to the door, so he can make a little movement to grab his wand. He's not holding his wand. What's that gonna do? Nothing, but at least he has it. This is where the door creaks all the way open, and Harry kind of peeks around. He doesn't want to look, he doesn't want to look totally, and here's the key. I don't want to see him. I don't want to see Black standing there. Because uh that would be way too easy. Uh I want this to be a little more dramatic. So Harry kind of peeks around, and I'm I'm imagining this scene from Harry's eyes. Like we are looking out of Harry's eyes, and out of the corner we can see maybe it's like a boot, maybe it's a hand, maybe it's like a watery image of his face, like something like that. Something like that. But to avoid a plot hole here, there is security happening, and that is why Black is going to run. So I'm imagining something like like a like a cattawalling charm. You know the spell when Harry and Ron Hermione um aberated into Hogsmead in uh Deathly Hollows, and there, you know, uh an alarm went off. That's kind of what I'm imagining. But maybe Black found a way around it, but maybe there's like there's multiple. So that's that's uh what what I'm imagining here. For a moment, it's silence and it is stillness. Black is standing there, and we know he's there and we don't see him. That's it's a very chilling moment. And then just like last time, so the alarm goes off. Something triggered it, some you know, Black's, you know, uh defenses wore off, whatever it was, it starts going off. It's a blaring alarm. Harry whips around just in time to again see the dormitory door shut. And now everyone knows what's going on. But Harry is ready. Everyone else is kind of waking up, you know, kind of groggy. You don't know what's going on, but Harry is ready. The Quidditch match is forgotten. And here's what he's thinking about the conversation in the three broomsticks. That is racing through his head. All he can think about is that the man running through the halls right now is the very one who killed his parents. Harry doesn't think he has his wands in his hand, he bolts. So black is running down the dormitory steps, Harry can hear him, he can kind of see him running. Harry sprints after him. So there are, I think there are trolls posted outside the uh uh dormitory, so like something like that. Like there's there's some kind of guard. It might be um Sir Sir Keduggan who is still there. So anyway, Sir Sir Keduggan is there. Black blasts out of the portrait hole, and it's important. The whole chase, I don't want to see him. I don't want to, you know, look at his face, I don't want to see his back, like I don't want to see him. I just want to have glimpses, I just want to have, you know, sounds like you know, it we shouldn't see him like, you know, we shouldn't, you know, not see him at all. Because I definitely want to make it clear that it is him. But Harry is sprinting after him. I mean, he is so angry, he is so angry. Black is running down the halls, Harry's running after him, and here is the scene that I this is the point that I saw so clearly. I knew I had to put it in after I after I kind of reflected on this moment. There there comes a long corridor and and a broken window. That's kind of how we realized that Black got in. Um, and of course, the broken window is like, well, that's stupid. How did he manage that? Of course, he was already inside the grounds. Of course, her Hermione would say, Well, there's more than just walls that protect the castle. Of course, she's right, but those charms can be uh overlooked, those those dementaurs can be slipped past if he is just a dog. So I think the broken window makes sense. Anyway, whatever it is, maybe it's an uh uh an open door, maybe it's you know what? Maybe that's it, because the broken window is a little obvious. So here's here's what I'm thinking. So, okay, let's just run through it. They're running, the chase is on. There's still no one there because it's, you know, it's still it's still tough. I think Dumbledore, of course, Dumbledore could aberrate right there, but you know, let's just let him not do that for uh for a moment. Because of course he's also running very fast. Even Dumbledore, who knows everything that goes on around here, would maybe would aberrate to like the wrong spot. Something like that. Whatever it is, it's just Harry and Black. Here's what happens they're running down, they're twisting, turning staircases, and eventually they come to a long corridor. One that, you know, Black can't hide in. But of course, I don't want to, you know, glaze over the fact that Black is still like a full-grown dude, and Harry's a kid, so I'm not really I'm not envisioning Harry gaining on him by any means. But by but at some point, the distance between them is not so great that by the time they reach this long corridor, they can still see each other. So Harry Black bursts out of the stairs, sees his escape, which is at the end, there's a door onto a balcony overlooking the Hogwarts grounds. That's a better view. Uh, and the door is open, we assume that that's where he got in. So Black runs towards there, and Harry runs after him after, you know, a few seconds later after you burst out of the stairs. Here's exactly what happens. This is the first time I think we should truly see his face. Of course, this, you know, we may be there wanted posters, whatever it is. You know, we we know kind of what he looks like, but he should be so much more terrifying a person. Like, impossibly, like, almost like a Dementor. That's kind of what Harry should be reminded of when when when looking at it. Black whips around and looks at Harry, and this is the scene that I that I saw so clearly in my head when kind of putting this whole thing together. It's just it's Harry at one end of the hall in the middle of the night, the moonlight shining in, and black at the other. It's like the lighting is dark. We we we can't make him out, you know, perfectly, but we see his bright, shining eyes. We see his his you know, his haggard stance, he's he's hunched, his head's bowed, he's s deathly skinny. We see these ragged robes hanging off of him. He's he's dirty, his hair's a long, it's matted. He is the he is the he is the criminal that we think he is. That's what I want to be thinking. I want to look at him for the first time, look at him dead in the eyes, and really know. We know deep in our hearts, looking at that gaze, that that is the mass murderer on the loose, Sirius Black. And then he turns, he walks almost slowly out the door, and he's gone. Harry runs down to the balcony, he blasts through the door, he he looks around, he looks over the edge, but he doesn't see a thing. Man, exciting stuff. Really exciting stuff. I am so looking forward to that sequence. I think uh blood, you know, the the the the chase with black is really important. So I think there's definitely a lot of good stuff to be had there. So those two things, these, you know, that's kind of the meat of this episode. There is more that happens in this episode, so I will say here is what uh goes on. There are a few more things that happen in in the episode. So the first one is Harry and Ron go to tea with Hagrid, and he kind of Hagrid scolds them for being cold to Hermione. Uh, and of course, this is because Skybrus has gone missing, and uh, we haven't it's a pretty small detail, so um we haven't really been talking about it too much in these episodes, but Skybrus did go missing, there's bloodstain, you know, Skybrus faked his own death, so with that whole debacle, uh Ron and Hermione are are kind of at odds. So Harry and Ron go to have tea with Hagrid to kind of uh talk about it, and Hagrid says, you know, you guys are being really, really mean to Hermione. After that, uh we have the whole Shrieking Shack. Uh, you know, Harry uh takes the invisibility cloak to the shrieking shack. I want to make sure it is a scary uh, you know, scene. Like, not not like truly, but Harry sees the shrieking shack and kind of gets a chill because I want to set that up for later. So he sees that. And then uh after the shrieking shack, so and also the mud, so Harry's throwing mud, and I the reason why I don't really think we should have to discuss is because it's very similar to the uh films. I think the films do it do it justice. So I am I am okay with that. After that, we have unfortunately Buckpeak sentenced to death. And this is I include- I wanted to have have this in there because uh this is kind of a Hermione power move. This is this whole sequence is kind of like a Hermione moment. So, first, she storms out of divination. That that's the first. She slaps Crystal Ball, storms out of divination. Next, Buckpeak sentenced to death. She is there for Hagrid, she is so sensitive, she really sees him, and it should be a really terrible scene to watch. And then Draco is mocking him, and Hermione gives him gives him the old one, two, like Vernon said, Harry should give to the Dementors. Uh Hermione is is not holding back. I absolutely want this in the in the TV show. It would be it would be a crime not to include the slap. So that's uh what we have there. And the final whole part of this episode is I thought, you know, we've ended a few episodes on Downers. Let's let's make this one happy. So we ended uh we are gonna end episode six on the Gryffindor v. Slytherin Quidditch final, and of course, Gryffindor wins. So good job, Gryffindor, day one. Uh, that is the end of episode six. So I'm brushing over those things because they are very similar to the film. Uh I am not making huge changes there. And that is that somewhat holds true for this next episode, but it is important that we discuss a few things in

Episode seven opens with studying for OWLs

here. So, episode seven begins with studying for owls. I feel like we've uh opened the past few episodes with action. I think it makes sense that we open this episode with inaction. It is owl season, everyone's studying hard, maybe we open up on, you know, we see we see the grounds, we see the sun, we see the empty halls, and we cut to the library where everyone is sitting studying for their exams. Uh, this is, you know, Harry does not know what's going on. Harry, Ron, Hermione are all sitting together. Clearly, Hermione knows what she's doing. Harry and Ron have no idea. And they're kind of making an effort to study for divination, but they just don't know what's going on. It's just, it's, it's, it's impossible. I don't blame them, honestly. So they're trying to prep for divination, but again, it seems almost impossible. Eventually, Harry goes in for his uh for his uh divination owl, and this is where we have the prediction. This is where Trulani, for the first time, we witness an actual prediction. She goes all raspy, she she, you know, something, she's just like feeling, you know, there's like something like cle clearly Harry sees that there's something going on, and this is where she gives the prediction about the you know servant returning to his master, you know, tonight uh at at midnight, the servant will rejoin his master, that that whole thing. I uh love the Jim Dale rendition. It's it's it's it's quite quite the spectacle. So good job, Jim Dale. He really captures it. So the so Harry learns something. Harry, this is, you know, something's going on. Clearly, there is a there is a prophecies to to be had. Harry goes to Dumbledore to to discuss it. And we don't really know what it means. We don't really know what it means because there's definitely, you know, we we understand maybe parts, but I don't know. We don't really understand the whole thing. And it's also important that Harry makes up the whole you know thing about Buckbeak, about you know, seeing Buckbeak flying away, he's you know, he's fine. And then Chulani's like, oh, you sure it's not, you know, headless, and Harry says, No, no, Buckbeak is fine. So, you know, maybe Harry's making a prediction of his own here, you never know. So I definitely want those two important things. So that is where we begin episode seven. Uh, but there is definitely a lot more to discuss in this episode. So let's move

The Shrieking Shack

on. We have one more sequence to discuss in this episode. That is, in we are gonna finish out season three, episode seven with this sequence. It is, of course, the Shrieking Shack. So I the reason I brushed over the the pat the last few events of episode six, like I said, is because they were very similar to the film and the book. And I didn't feel the need, we don't really have to just tell the story. I just I want to really analyze what's going on here. So but it's important, one of the Points that I did make was it's important that when uh Harry goes to the Dreaking Shack for the first time from the outside, he looks at it. It's the most haunted building in Britain, they say, and uh Harry gets a little, you know, a little shivery down his spine. That is to set up this moment right here. So this is the whole the whole thing. This is the whole thing. Uh the first time I should say. So Harry, Ron, and Hermione, they go down to Hagrid's hut to comfort him on Buckbeak's execution day. It is really awful. It's like a funeral march. They they go down to Hagrid's hut. He is in tears and he says, You will not stay, you will not stay. So when they see the ministry people coming, he says, Go, go, go, go out the back. You're not supposed to be out here anyway. So they uh then they go out the back door and they start walking off back to the castle club because Hermione just does not want to see it. But I think it's unfair that we put this on Hermione, like she's the one, like you know, she's she's the one who doesn't want to hear it. Like, I think it's it's kind of unfair, because truth be told, they are all devastated. So they are walking back, and I think we we hear the slice. Ugh, and it's just the worst. It is just the worst to hear it. But at that point, Skyper escapes, he runs away, and that's where they meet the womping willow. Of course, we know how this goes, uh, and they are are unfortunately taken in. First, it's Ron. Ron is grabbed by the leg uh and dragged in. He is he he crosses, you know, his he g his foot gets caught in a root and like a gunshot, his leg breaks. Oh, that's gotta hurt. I mean, uh watching this back is gonna be painful because boy, oh boy, that has gotta be painful. Have getting dragged through a little tiny hole and getting your leg caught, and it's so oh my gosh, that's terrible. So, Ron, I am sorry. That Alistair Stout's gonna have to pull pull some out there, so that is gonna really hurt. But after that, Harry and Hermione, they have to go because it is it is, of course, not any dog who drags him in, it is the Grim who drags him in. It is the omen of death that Harry has been seeing all year, so he knows we have to go after him. So he and Hermione go through the whole thing of uh getting past the moffing willow. They they they have their whole um ordeal, and eventually they uh get get through, and they are, you know, they they make their way through. They walk down the passage, the earthen passageway, and they walk through, and they realize they're in the shrieking shack. They're in the shrieking shack, they follow the trail of dust, and this is where they see Ron on the bed, he's holding his leg, he has faces screwed up in pain, and then he says, Where's where's the dog? And then, of course, the famous, you know, dog, there's no dog, he's the dog, Ron points, and that's when we see Sirius Black, uh the convicted escaped mass murderer, standing in the corner staring at them both, and that is a kind of a heart-stopping moment there. Uh, and of course we have the whole thing there, you know, they they converse, and then Harry goes to strangle him and tackles him to the ground, and Black is laughing, and it's he'd like we should hate him in this second. We should truly hate him. But then Lupin comes in. Lupin comes in, and this is where I think this is a point that I think we should really despise Sirius Black. Because at this point we think that he killed Harry's parents. Of course, we don't really think that, but here here we are, because of course we literally had an episode that refuted that. But we should see how much Harry hates Sirius Black at the very least. Here is a pivotal part of this scene. I love in the film how Lupin seemed like the villain as well. That that little smirk he had in his face as he helped Black up, like their their their uh banter, like gosh, they were they were a band of brothers in that second, and it was just disgusting to watch because of course Black is the one who killed Harry's parents and Lupin and him are seeming to work together. Uh gosh, it is just awful to see, really. So I want to see Lupin as the villain in this second. But then we go through the whole story, and Lupin, you know, comes out that uh Lupin's a werewolf and all that, and then we have-I mean, this scene, it just gets better and better, really. Then Snape walks in, and then we have the whole, you know, uh so-and-so Peter Pettigrew, and then Snape, and then they tie him up, and then uh they walk out, the moon comes out, and this is where Lupin unfortunately gets transformed, and I will say, I also do like how the film did it. I mean, I don't love the like the actual way. It's it's kind of like the whole thing that I was talking about with the uh Dementor lesson, how hair was kind of falling down going black. I don't really I mean I I like how it looked. I don't like how it kind of came across. But with the whole werewolf uh transformation, I love how it came across. Though it did it it looked a little kind of um, I don't know, the the essential effects maybe weren't quite there. I thought it was kind of strange how they kind of zoomed him on on his eye. That was that was a little weird. But you know, then again, the whole scene is very uncomfortable. So, truth be told, I don't have any specific vision for how this should go, but I do like seeing, I mean, it should be grotesque. That's that's what I do know. It should be grotesque, it shouldn't be a you know a careful uh thing, because of course this sh we should see just how painful it is for Lupin. So he he very painfully transforms, and this is a this is a good moment for Snape because Snape puts them all behind him. Lupin is sorry, not not not not Lupin. Sirius and Pettigrew are far gone. They are they are far gone. Uh, because of course Pettigrew transformed and Lupin uh as as Lupin was was transforming and Sirius tried to get Petigrew. So it is just the trio and Snape facing Lupin. Snape gets the trio behind him, and this is, you know, little hints that Snape is actually looking out for them. Uh and the werewolf is about to get them, is a second from getting them, but serious pounces. Serious pounces. Uh, and I I'm not a fan of the uh I don't, I mean, I I do like how they did it in the film, but I wanna I want to see the battle. I want to see the battle between the dog and the wolf here. So this is this is definitely an uh important moment. I think I I I love the name of the chapter. This it's it's um cat, rat, and dog. So there's definitely a good uh uh thing here. I do like that uh chapter title. So that's that's kind of the division here. It's a visceral battle. They are fighting and scratching and biting, and it's just the worst. It's such a painful thing to watch. And eventually we hear the howl from the woods, and that's where Lupin runs off, saving Sirius' life. Lucky him. So they run through the woods, and of course, we have uh this is where Harry follows Sirius because he is not one, uh he just wants to let Sirius get away, but also he's thinking, like, you know, Sirius, you know, this is kind of where that like they've already had the turning point where Sirius and Harry have, you know, talked, and Lupin said uh Sirius asked Harry to move move in with him, and I was like, oh my gosh, like we're beginning to truly see Sirius for for for who he is. So Lupin uh is off in the woods, Sirius is injured, and he he collapses by the lake. Harry is with him and is trying to trying to resuscitate him, but it is unfortunately too late because that that's when the Dementors descend. And this is where uh I got the idea for making the Dementor Bogart smaller. Because here's what I'm envisioning. Sirius is collapsed, and the Dementors are swirling. They are coming from everywhere, they are coming from everything, and each one swoops down, and this is really where we see just how big they are. I mean, you know, ten feet tall, at least five feet wide, robes billowing out, flying through the air. And this is kind of where I I had this vision of like uh this a cross section. Harry's standing with his wand, he's casting a patronus, and we see the cross section, kind of like we did in the film. We see that we see the Dementor emerge out of the shadows, and it's just it just never stops. That's that's what I'm seeing here. Because it is nighttime. So Harry's casting his Patronus, and the light of the Patronus illuminates the uh Dementor, but we can't, it's it's like we can't see the end of it. Like like the like it's coming from the night itself. This this Dementor is is is emerging, and Harry just can't keep them all at bay. His Patronus eventually fails, and he too is taken by the darkness. There you go. There you go. That is episode seven done. This is gonna be action-packed. I mean the film does it super well, but I am so looking forward to having more time to explore. I want to see the the kind of culmination of the Sirius Lupin Snape kind of triangle, because they are all they are not on good terms, that's for sure. I'm looking forward to seeing that. I'm so looking forward to seeing this scene play out. The Dementors are such a good part of this. Harry standing up for him, Harry hating Sirius and hating Lupin, and then just really beginning to see the full picture. It is such an important episode, and we have one more episode to go. This is gonna be the season finale of season three. I am so excited. Harry is gonna go back in time and save the day. There's a lot to be had next week.
