·      42:50 Episode two opens with another quiet forest. This one is more cheerful. In a flash of light they drop to the ground. They enjoy the Quidditch World Cup, and then run from the Death Eaters as they infiltrate the camp. The Dark Mark is cast in the sky, and the episode comes to an end.

I am so excited for today's episode because we are finally diving in to season four. We had a wonderful season finale to season three. We wrapped up all the loose ends. Sirius Black is on the loose yet again. Lupin quit. Pettigrew is gone. And boy, have we got uh quite a treat today. We had a nice wrap-up uh uh episode in between, and here we are with season four. We're gonna be discussing episodes one and two to season four today, and I am very excited because we have some super, super cool scenes that we didn't even get in the film. Uh so this is a great opportunity because the Oppet of Fire is a really good example of how the books have so much and the films just couldn't uh couldn't contain it all. So this the the this TV show is gonna be such a good uh opportunity, especially starting now, uh, to really dive into all those things that we missed. So I am so excited. Goals for season four

As we do with every season, we must now set our goals. What do we want to achieve? What specifically in season four are we going to explore further that we didn't have a chance to really get into in previous seasons? Well, season four, like we talked about in last week's episode, and I will say last week's episode is very important because it sets up a lot of key things. This is a we we kind of discussed this season is a transition moment. The moments between season three and four, we're kind of getting into the real meat of the story now with Voldemort and the rise of darkness and the wizarding world. So if you haven't heard that episode, I would highly recommend you listen to it. So I will have that link in the show notes below. But basically, what I was uh discussing in that episode is seasons one through three, however you slice it, are kind of a package deal. And they are the uh they set up the lore, they give us the relationships, the people, the places, and they kind of give us the tools to understand the conflict. Season four is the conflict. So we're kind of entering this new phase of the story where Voldemort is now, it's not just a story, you know, it's not just something that we are looking out for, it is something that is real and that is happening, and we are going to find that out pretty quick, let me tell you. So that's why it's so important that we really understand what we are discussing in this season. So, what goals do I have? Well, the first one, and this is something that we discussed last week, is I want to explore the growing complexity of characters. This is a huge theme because just like the first three seasons are kind of a package deal, now that we're beginning the fourth season, we're kind of beginning a new phase of the characters as well. They are getting older and we they are really beginning to mature. And this is kind of a moment where they are beginning to see the bigger picture, and that is a theme that, I mean, even in this episode that we're going to uh be heavily discussing. So I am super, super excited to see uh not only with the trio, and I would say especially not with the trio. This this TV show is designed to show us everything, not just the world from Harry's perspective, but extended. Because that's kind of, you know, that's what the books are and that's what the films are. I'm not saying that's a bad thing because that's exactly what this whole story is, but with the TV show, we can't just have a retelling, and that's what we've been discussing for I think literally years at this point. So the complexity point here is not just about spending more time with other characters, but it's really getting to know them in a much deeper fashion. We discussed Malfoy and Neville in particular last week, and that is uh those are two really good examples because those are characters that really deepen, uh even uh, you know, beyond this, this season for sure, they are ones uh two, these are two characters who we should really keep keep our eyes on. So they're kind of good uh indicators for how characters should be growing and changing, but they are absolutely not even close to the only characters who should be you know going through similar uh similar changes. So I am so looking forward to seeing in this season not only Draco and Neville change, but of course the trio, but also like maybe even people who we don't even you know pinpoint as people who should be changing, like adults even. Like I'm looking forward to Dumbledore, McGonigal Haggard, like how are they gonna evolve? Snape was kind of the main focus last season, so I'm not gonna be too mad if he isn't like a huge focus. Uh this isn't really his book, you know. But he, of course, you know, he does have uh he does have a role, so he is also in the mix there. So I think that's another really important point here, but it's more than just complexity of you know the characters within themselves, but the characters in relation to each other. Because complexity is not just you know emotional depth, it's not just all those things or you know uh a complicated past being slowly revealed, which is often the case for a growing complexity of a of a character, but also relationships, and that's gonna be super important as well, especially considering how important, for example, Harry and Draco's relationship is and how it mirrors the story. Again, all this really good stuff, really important backstory is in the uh our episode last week. So uh if you haven't, absolutely listen to that episode because I feel like I'm just you know diving deeper into what we were talking about last week. So the relationship between Harry and Draco is going to be so, so, so important. Uh, and that is I think their real relationship starts now, in this very episode that we are going to be discussing today. So I am very high uh very excited to see that. So that is our first girl. Complexity with characters, between characters, that is really what we are going to be seeing. The second goal I have is I want to begin the greater dark stirring of magic. And this is also kind of along a similar line of the uh, you know, end of the beginning kind of kind of idea here. Because dark magic has always existed, and it probably will always exist. And I'm not, you know, I'm not trying to introduce it. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel here for, you know, dark magic as a concept in this season. No. What I'm trying to do is begin the true stirring of the dark magic that will define the conflict for the rest of the story. I think we're kind of prancing around, you know, where we are headed in the first three seasons. Because in the first, yeah, we have flashbacks to when Voldemort was powerful, and then we saw him, you know, we saw his demise, so that was real, but it was kind of a shadow. In the Chamber of Secrets, it was literally a shadow in the form of Tom Riddle, who was still powerful, and we got a hint of that dark magic and what its potential was, but still it wasn't the true full-fledged dark magic that we're going to be seeing later. And in the Prisoner of Ask Man, Voldemort wasn't really involved too much, but we did have Sirius Black, and he was kind of the dark wizard of the book. And it was only after we realized that he is not dark at all, and that was kind of another shadow of darkness where we kind of got a hint of what it was. We are not having any shadows anymore. In the very first few moments of this of these episodes that we're going to be discussing today, we are going to just destroy that idea of a whisper of dark magic, uh, and it is going to be in our faces all the time. And that is what we are headed for. Unfortunately, uh, that's what Harry's headed for for the for the next few seasons, is that dark magic is real and it is it is coming for him. And that is kind of what this season is setting up. So I want to begin that stir. I want to begin to understand what that really means in a in a real-world scenario. What does dark magic mean for the everyday ad Hogwarts? That's what I really want to get into. Because that everyday is going to become a reality, especially in uh Half-Blood Prince Deathly Hollows territory. Yeah, dark magic is going to be playing a big role in that. So I think it is foolish to not begin the rise now. If we get to like, you know, I'm thinking of especially in the Deathly Hollows when Snape is headmaster of Hogwarts and it's basically a death theater school, I think it would mean so much more if we have the context of what dark magic actually is, what it means for the characters. If you can have that context as early as possible and really grow our idea of what dark magic is, moments like that become so much more impactful because especially, for example, like when Dumbledore is killed, and we kind of, you know, the set that sense of light is kind of gone and the dark magic kind of floods in. I think we should be feeling that from two sides. The fact that Dumbledore's gone, and the fact that the dark that the dark magic is now taking over. In my mind, those should be almost equal. Those, you know, it it should be devastating that Dumbledore is dead, and it should be devastating that dark magic is now taking over. So I want to have the context of really what is dark magic, what does it mean for us, and how do we see its rise, especially beginning now that Voldemort is truly back. So dark magic is a big part of this season, this episode today, uh, and many seasons to come. So that is our second goal. Our final goal is I want to draw Harry closer to the outside world. What do I mean by that? The first three seasons are about as insular as you can get. There's no exploration, there's no, you know, I mean, it's just, it's very contained. We don't really go exploring all too much. Like the most dangerous, the most exciting place that we go is, I would say, the Forbidden Forest. Let's just let that sink in. The Forbidden Forest is the most exciting place we go. Uh yeah, I'm not sure about that one. But here, first episode, bam, we're in the Quidditch World Cup. Pretty cool stuff. So I the reason I say draw Harry to the outside world, not push him out, is because, first of all, although there are two reasons. One is it should be of his own accord. I don't want to, you know, manufacture new parts of the story just to push him out of his comfort zone. Because if it's not natural, it means nothing. And the second part of this is I don't want to say draw him and leave him out in the outside world and he's done forever and he shut out. No, that's that's not it at all. I want to draw him out closer to the outside world because the truth is he's not there yet, and he won't be until Voldemort is gone, because the outside world is a world without Voldemort. So that's the point I want to make here. And I don't want to make it too obvious because the truth is, part of the conflict is, you know, we have this whole deal with with Voldemort, and it feels like it's a world that will just never end. Like he is here to stay, and our existence is defined by him. That's how it should feel. But then once he is defeated, and they kind of, you know, the sun rises on a new, on a new dawn, on a new world, that's kind of that is the outside world. You know, the moment where they're standing on the bridge, uh, the very last scene, that right there is the outside world. That's what we're slowly now inching towards. With the first three seasons, yeah, we were getting closer because the story was moving forward. That's just how it is. But we really weren't. We really weren't because like I was saying with the with the whole dark magic, you know, it was just shadows. It was like, it was like we were seeing the promise of beginning to move. Like, it was like we were getting prepped to prepare, to prepare to go, you know, like it was just so many layers of like we're going, like we will be going soon, you know, to to the real story. Like the real story is coming, and then we will begin our beginning. Like it was kind of that feeling of like so many layers deep, we just weren't there. Now we are here, and Harry is going to begin his true journey of defeating Voldemort, and that is going to start right now. So those are our three goals. We open episode one in a forest

We open in a forest. We don't know where. We don't know when. We don't know who. We don't know how. We just we just don't know. And that's okay. That's okay. It's nighttime, it's cool, you see the mist kind of kind of hanging above the moss. The trees are thick, but the ground is is is pretty free. You know, we don't we don't really know what's going on. And that's and that's again, that's okay. We hear the sounds of the night. Maybe there are some birds, maybe there's some animals, you know, maybe uh an an owl or two, something something like that, just to keep it magical. But the forest doesn't stay silent for long because soon the we can kind of feel the air is changing a little bit. You know, maybe the ri the darkness is kind of wrapping a little thicker in certain places. Maybe, maybe the you know, the moonlight is kind of getting obscured by something. Maybe a cloud drifts over, maybe the birds go silent. And that's when we kind of see something in the distance. It's still, it's it's you know, if the forest was silent before, now it is truly silent because the birds have stopped, the light is gone, and we can barely see there's this there's this dark mass, this dark cloud hanging over the trees, hanging over the over the the the roots, and it's kind of kind of coalescing, it's kind of gr like gathering in one area on the ground, and it's forming into this this n tiny little pale figure. You know, it's slowly this this dark kind of it's like it's not quite shadow, it's not quite smoke, it's just this this energy that's kind of grouping into this one little spot. And eventually it's all kind of collected, and we just see this this little tiny, you know, pale, you can't quite see what it is. It almost looks like a like a child, like someone so so tiny. And you know, the camera gets a little closer, we we we can kind of see it a little bit better, and it kind of turns its head and we see that it is none other than Voldemort. So I hope that sets this scene a bit for you. Here's what I'm thinking. This takes place maybe moments even, maybe a few minutes after the ending battle of the first season. After the Philosopher's Stone, Harry, so this is a throwback. Harry makes it through the final challenges, Hermione says goodbye, he walks down the stairs, he gets to the mirror of Aristotle, he sees Quirl, they have their whole conversation, he gets the stone, Quirl dives at him, grabs his skin, burns up, and Harry has the stone, but Voldemort rises up, flies away, Harry is knocked unconscious, and this is kind of where Voldemort goes. So we just so Voldemort flies away, and now he lands. I believe he is in Albany, he has a f in a forest in Albania, he is fled, uh, and it is nighttime, he does not know, you know, he's he is trying to stay alive because his host is gone. We see just how frail he is. Think of the Voldemort that we saw in the at the train station, the very, very, very end of the story. When Harry is at the train station with Dumbledore, we see uh Voldemort under under like a bench and he is shriveled and he is he is truly dying. I mean, it is it is awful to see. That is kind of where we are. Uh, but he is, you know, maybe a little bit better because he does have his his his orcruxes still at this point. So he is small and he is shriveled, but he shouldn't be like totally, totally, totally frail like we saw him then. But of course he is still not not doing well. So we see him on the forest floor. And this is important because we have to set up where he is going. Uh so at this point, uh we should kind of not really follow his journey because I don't want to spend time seeing him kind of coming back to power. I think that would be um, you know, a little redundant because we have started a lot of these seasons with kind of a character and then following them somewhere. I don't think I I don't really want to see that, but I want to see him frail, and then I want to see uh kind of a cut to the riddle house. So just so we can have that context, and I don't want any lines, I don't want any dialogue, I don't want any music during this opening sequence. I just want to see how frail he is. Because it's important to set that up. His rise to power is just that. It's a rise. And it's not like we can just kind of let him be be be chillin' and then like that's kind of it. Like, no, that's not that's not quite where where we are. So I think that there are there's a really good opportunity here to make something uh happen. We don't necessarily follow his journey, but we kind of are going along. So after we see him in the forest, we kind of cut away to the riddle house. But here's the deal. I don't want to go in yet because we aren't there yet. No, no, no. We are still outside. Frank still has to go in. So here's here's what I want. We kind of get a nice zoom in on Voldemort. Maybe we don't really see his face like too clearly. Maybe we don't see because like I don't want uh I don't want our vision of him in this uh in this season to be this frail kind of version. Like I I want our our knowledge of him to be up to date, which is why I want to make sure that we know that he is in this state, but I want to still have the context that he is very dangerous. So we see him kind of frail, but I don't want to see his face directly. He maybe he can kind of turn, we can see like a telltale nose or eyes or whatever. We see something that shows us that it's clearly him. And we are on him, we see him on the floor, and then we cut away to the riddle house, and it is completely dark. There's no window yet. Remember how we how we ended last season? The very last episode of season three was we we were on the window, we uh, you know, we zoomed out of the Hogwarts Express and flew across the country to Little Hangleton, and we had the close-up on the house and the light turned on and we cut to black. That's kind of where we are building up to now. So we cut away to the Riddle House. Again, it is quiet. It is a different quiet though. It is a nice, calm, sleepy English village, uh, sleeping at night, you know, and enjoying their enjoying their summer. So it's something it's something a little more pleasant because I want to kind of have a little taste of Freena before we dive back into the doom and gloom. So we see the Riddle House. We don't know what it is, you know, it shouldn't be labeled like Riddle House, you know. I I was while writing this, I was thinking of uh if you've seen Mord uh not Mordor, if you've seen The Rings of Power, uh, the uh Lord of the Rings show, or you'd have seen the memes like when they when I think it was like the second season when uh Mountain Erupted and like Mordor was created and like the text kind of like it was like flames on the screen and it wrote out the word Mordor, it's crazy, it's like so cool. And how that's like the worst, like cringiest thing ever. Yeah, that's that's exactly what I don't want. So if you know what I'm talking about, it's fine. The good news is we are not gonna, you know, I I don't wanna for the first for the opening, I don't wanna have like somewhere in Albania. Like, I don't wanna have that uh on on the bottom of the screen. And then when we cut to the Riddhouse, I don't I don't wanna have like Riddle House, Little Hangleton. Like, I don't wanna have that. Because this should be uh this should be much more personal than that. And that was part of our uh episode last week, which again, I'm telling you, you gotta, you gotta hear it. That episode really sets up something good. So it's gonna this this this this moment is intense, you know? Like we are it's a very human moment here seeing Voldemort and realizing what it what it means, and then cutting away and kind of breathing a sigh of relief seeing seeing the riddle house. But something in the back of our minds is still like, oh, that's that's not a good that's not a good house either. So that is uh kind of the the idea of what I want to explore. So we see the riddle house, but we don't stay there for long because soon enough Frank uh is getting out of his bed. He is waking up, he's you know, his his his his bed is squeaking, he's his floorboards are groaning, and that's kind of how he's feeling because his joints are aching. He wants to refill his hot water bottle uh so he can ease his anger. He gets out of bed, he turns on a light. And I think it's important here to remember that we are in the 90s, so I'm looking forward to some nice nineties decor in his in his house. He turns on the kettle, uh, he lights the flame, he he he he does all this, he gets ready, and then he's kind of standing next to the stove, waiting, waiting for the water to boil, and he's looking out the window, and that's when we see the light flick on. And we're like, oh no. Because Frank isn't really sure what's what's what's what's going on in here, because he thinks they have uh they they lit a fire. That that's what he thinks. Because he knows that the the kids love going into the riddle house and messing around. Uh so he is he's aghast, he's he's mad, he throws down whatever he was he was holding, uh, and he gets his lantern and he or his his his torch, he goes into the yard, and that is when we begin the riddle house scene. So this is the opening. This is something that Harry is going to have to remember for a long time. So I guess you can kind of think of it like we are now, like we are watching from Harry's eyes, or rather Harry's watching from our eyes, really. Uh so we, me, uh, us, you know, the viewers and Harry, we are kind of side by side at this point, and that is a really cool idea. So we follow Frank up to the house. He gets his keys out, he opens the door, he walks in, and this is a kind of another moment. So here is here is the motif that I am using in this opening scene. It is silence. The forest, it was, you know, chirps and buzz, the hum of a quiet forest at night, and then as Voldemort kind of appeared and began to c collect himself, the quiet kind of closed in, slowly but surely, you know, closing out all sound. And that's kind of what I'm going with here, too. When we cut away from the forest to the village, we see that the birds are back, the sound is back, the sound of the night is kind of humming all around us. And that's what we have when Frank is walking up. Then he opens the door and closes it and goes inside, and again, there's total silence. So we should get this idea that a Voldemort is near. I think there is, you know, there is something really unnerving about silence in a film. It's like you're waiting for something, you know. I mean, that's why the moment before a jump scare in in a uh in like a movie is so quiet, usually. Like it's not like if if if music is blaring and be there running and pounding and then like something jumps out, like, yeah, it's gonna be scary, but it's not like a true jump scare. But that's kind of where we're going out here. And this is also getting back to kind of an older idea that we were talking about, how like um I want this to be a little darker, you know, maybe a little more, a little more unnerving. And that's kind of aiding this this goal. I'm not gonna have I don't want to have like a jump scare. Like, I th I could a hundred percent see the filmmakers making a decision, like it's silent in the house when Frank goes in. And then as he's like walking up the stairs, he sees like a portrait like coming out of the darkness, but it's just like a portrait. But I could totally see like our heart, our heart could be kind of pounding in that in that moment for sure. So I not nothing like that, you know. This is still you know, I want to keep it safe. So he's still in the house because the truth is, I think the silence should be enough. Knowing that the silence means something is enough. So he's walking up the stairs, and now he's not quite so sure because he feels something. And we should that that that should be evident on his face. Because what I don't want is for him to just be pounding up the stairs, oh these, you know, these darn kids are doing something. He's pounding up the stairs and he stops and he's listening. Because then like obviously they're gonna hear him and they're just gonna kill him right there. So I want to keep this realistic, you know. So he goes in the house and he feels something, you know. It's like, oh, there's you know, there's I am in this house. Like that's kind of what he's feeling. Like he feels he so distinctly feels his presence in the house. That's kind of the you know, the the idea. So he makes his way up the stairs, you know, and it's creaking, and uh, you know, it's it's you know, we aren't quite sure, but we start to hear voices. And of course Frank is expecting this, but it's not the voice that he expected. He expected like laughing and you know, kids and you know, things things like that, but that's not quite it at all. And I love the uh descriptions in the book of how you know one voice is is is high pitched and demanding, and another is because it's more kind of uh nervous and and and and shaking, and that sets the scene so well, not only for their relationship, for Voldemort and Wormtails of relationship, but also for how far Voldemort's come. Because just a few minutes ago, we were in the forest in Albania three years, you know, ago, from from from this moment, you know, seeing Voldemort kind of in his as frail as frail could be. But now he's kind of, you know, he's clearly not uh he's clearly not at full strength, but he is definitely uh he is still, you know, as as demanding as ever. So Frank hears that, and I and I do like the moment of uh we hear the stare creak, and Frank is like, Frank's face is so relatable in the film. He's like, oh my gosh, he looks down at that stare. And if I was him, I would be just as just as terrified. So the stair creaks, uh, and he is terrified that he is he is overheard, but he is not. And we see so Frank is looking in the door, we see and we don't see Voldemort, that's very important. We don't see Voldemort, but maybe maybe we see a hand, you know, some something like that. But we do see Wormtail and then Barty Crouch Jr. He is very important, and uh I I do like David Tannan. I like the um kind of very disheveled look to him. I think that that that definitely works. So he uh he he crouches before you know this this frail form in the armchair, and he and and they're having a very intense conversation, wormtails there, and then Frank is like, what is going on? Like clearly he is absolutely like he is he is mesmerized by what is going on because like obviously what an interesting group of people in such an interesting place. Like, what the heck are they doing? But he looks down and Nagini is slithering by his feet and he has to clap his hand over his mouth or he has to stuff his fist in his face, like he is he does not he he almost cries out and like like real dude, like totally. If a huge snake was crawling by me, I'd be probably pretty scared too. Or uh slithering rather. So the snake goes by, Naggini goes by and goes into the room, and then we kind of hear partial tongue, but we like it's not like obvious, like we just kind of hear some like whispering, some hissing going on, and one says, uh, it seems, you know, it seems we're not alone. Why don't uh Wormtail gets up and goes to the door, and Frank is like frozen, and I totally understand. He is frozen with fear, his torches off, but we can see the crack of of light coming through the door, illuminating his face. Wormtail goes to the door and sees him and and and almost smiles a little bit. And then I I definitely want the line, you know, why don't you uh step aside, Wormtail, so I can give our guest a proper greeting. That is such an iconic line. Uh and then uh Pettigrew steps aside, Frank holds up his hands, he he starts to shake his head, he doesn't know what's going on. We see kind of Voldemort's hand raise a wand, and then the explosion of of green light. Frank is is is killed instantly, and Harry bolts awake, his eyes fly open, his heart is pounding. And that is where this scene ends. Thrilling, really thrilling. This is a vital scene, and I am so excited to see it. I am very much looking forward to Voldemort, and I think this this is intense. move on. Harry jolts awake in a cold sweat. He has had this horrible, horrible, horrible dream of a groundskeeper getting killed in a house by Voldemort. He is I mean, it is he is really regretting uh going to sleep at this point because he is just a terrible, terrible experience. He his his eyes fly open, he sits up, he's he's breathing hard, he puts his hand in his head, he's he's trying to remember, he's trying to remember, he's trying to remember. I love the the description in the book of like is trying to hold water in your hands. He just you just can't as hard as you try, you can't. It's slipping away. He's closed his eyes, he's trying to remember, but he can. He's still breathing heavy, it's still so fresh, but it just He is just alarmed is a good word. He is just alarmed at what he's just experienced. And he he's thinking. So we spend a few minutes like thinking with him, and maybe he writes a letter to Sirius, you know. That's that's what he does, is he writes down like his his dream and and kind of he's wondering what it means and what he should what he should be doing, and he just he just doesn't know. So I think he should I I think in the book what happens is he sends the letter after breakfast, but I think he should send it right when he wakes up. So let's say he wakes up at like seven or something. It's not it's it's still dark outside, but we see him write the letter and then go and then send it off. Uh, and he uh, you know, then as it's the sky's kind of getting brighter, then the morning is kind of coming, and he then goes downstairs to have breakfast with the Dursley. So he's a four-privet drive, enjoying the summer, uh slash not enjoying the summer at all, and no one listens to him. He just breezes right by, it's like he's not even there, making no noise, pretending he pretending he doesn't exist. Classic. Uh, and he is then he's just after for for breakfast, and Dudley is, I think, getting more and more incredibly large by the day. Uh they are they I think they is they maybe they receive a telephone call or maybe a letter that they don't have a uniform big enough for Dudley anymore. Uh, and so he had to go on a diet. So I think this is when they had they're eating grapefruit for breakfast, and it's just I mean, it's really tough. So Harry mentions that he's he's getting by uh with his friends sending him food, he's asking for food, and that's how he's surviving, which is like, yeah, totally. I couldn't imagine he's already kind of bottom of the uh lineup here, so you know, bottom of the lineup on a diet is probably he would honestly likely starve. Wouldn't be surprised. So he's getting his sustenance from other places. But the environment is as as dreary as always, and I I I love uh experiencing that. But soon the post comes, and in the post is a letter with about a thousand stamps. Every inch of the letter is covered in stamps, and this is of course from the from the Weaslies. It is addressed to Harry. Uh Vernon grabs it and opens it, and it is from the Weaslies, and they say, Alright, Harry, you know, it's time to go to the Quidditch World Cup. Uh but they are they are doing it the muggle way. They're they're being very nice. They send an email to the Dursleys first, and they say, just so you know there's a sporting event and we want to take Harry. Can we come by and and and get him? And I I love uh again, this is this is a great moment in the book because I love how Vernon is caught between like uh I I forget the exact language in in the text, but he is like, he's caught between he really wants Harry to get out of the house and never come back, but then like, but that would also be giving him what he wants. Like his his his his desire to you know kick Harry out is is you know clashing with his desire to give Harry good things, and it is such a funny, you know, situation. But in the end, what tips it over is Harry says, Oh, well, you know, I can just I'll just go right to my godfather, you know, that I'm being mistreated. He would hate to hear that. And of course, in their minds, he's still a mass murderer, so they are not happy about that. So Vernon lets his desire of Harry to leave win. And uh and and he says, fine, you can go. So Harry's elated, he runs upstairs, uh, and he finds Hedwig has returned with Pigwigeon. So Pig, the owl, Ron's owl, is here with a letter, and he says, uh, you know, can I can I be round round your place? I oh gosh, now I'm forgetting exactly what he thinks. He said, like Wednesday at five or something like that. It was something uh it like in in the evening, you know, some sometime in uh in the evening, of course, Harry is so excited, so he is ready for them. And that day comes and they're all waiting. They're all waiting. Harry's bags are packed, he is he is ready to go. And I think uh a few minutes passes and they're all kind of waiting, they've put on their best clothes, they're you know receiving them, they're waiting for the doorbell to ring, and then they hear a clunk, and another clunk, and a few more, and then voices coming from the fireplace, which has been all blocked up so they can't get through. And they're like, What? What's going on? Uh and then Mr. Weasley from inside the fireplace, he shouts, he said, Harry, Harry, stand back, stand back. So the Dursleys are their gass are flabbergat at this point. So they everyone stands back. Dudley's like, what's going on? Harry's kind of amused, but he knows what's gonna happen. So Vernon blasts the fireplace across the room. Dust and debris and bricks and mortars and plaster goes flying. Their living room is covered, they are covered, and the Weaslies tumble out of the fireplace onto the floor. This is exactly the kind of meeting they would have expected. And then, like nothing happened, Mr. Weasley tries to make small talk with Vernon. Harry gets the rest of his stuff together, uh, and they hit the fireplace. They they they hit the fireplace again. Of course, Fred and George drop their roll of sweets, which uh Dudley eats the ton tongue toffee, and he is tongue gets elongated. Uh, and then Vernon has to stay behind a little bit to fix that. But in the end, they all make it through. Uh, and uh Molly is gonna get really mad at the twins for doing that, so they all retreat. So they have made it. Harry is now in the burrow, and it is just as he imagines. I really want to see, because this is like we've had some intensity uh so far in in this episode. Now that we're kind of reaching the end of the episode, it's okay to kind of take a breath and relax because we're not kind of we're not in the dark, doom, and gloom yet. So it's okay to kind of relax. So I'm I I'm looking forward to seeing the burrow. It's magical, it's exactly how he imagines it. It's it's it's it's it's a home, there are wizards, there's magic, it's lovely. So Harry is glad to be back. Uh Harry uh and Hermione's been there for for a few days because he sees uh Quickshanks and they go up to Ron's room. They pass Percy along the way, who is pompous as ever. He's graduated at Hogwarts and now working for Mr. Crouch at the ministry. Uh, and the trio huddle up in Ron's room and listen to Molly crash out, uh, for lack of a better word, at the twins for leaving Dudley with the Tun Tung Toffee. Harry is so glad to be away, uh, and all is well. And I want to relax at the borough, you know? I want to just chill. I want to spend days roaming the gardens and going to shops and going to, you know, farmers markets and stuff. Like, I I want to enjoy the nature uh because they live in the countryside, and I think that's a really, really cool thing. So I am so uh I am definitely looking looking forward to that. And eventually, though, they have their final meal uh and they I love the um the smattering of of conversations. I should also mention Charlie Weasley. Yeah, yeah, he's here. Uh that's uh one of the first people that Harry meets when he walks in the borough, and that is absolutely a major character in the TV show. Thank you very much. So Charlie Weasley is um is there. Molly's telling him to cut his hair and get rid of his earring, and uh Percy's talking about all of his new things at the ministry, much to the amusement of Fred and George, who have put uh what is it, like some kind of dung in his soup or something like that. I don't know, something something funny like that. So we see that we see that there's such a big happy family, and it's really cool to see. Of course, Jinny is also there who's you know slowly getting over her fear of Harry. But I think after uh the events of the of the Chamber of Secrets, they've you know grown closer, so that's that's okay. But especially Jenny Hermione, they are on the same page about a lot of things, so they are definitely friends. So it is just a wonderful time. And I uh I again harping back on the books because I like how they laid this out. Uh is you know, Harry is Harry is just so content at at the end of this chapter. He is so happy. He feels he says his you know waistband is tight and his spirits are high, he has had good food, he has had good company, he has had a good time, and I think I really want to highlight that. I am very happy to see it. But the air of excitement is soon to descend because that very next day they are off. So they clean up from dinner, they head inside, they go to bed, and then they wake up on the day of the Quidditch World Cup. Not not the match, but they're the the the the day of their travel. So they are super excited. They all get up, they're the I think I I don't love in the film how Ron's like can barely move. Like, if I were him, I'd be thrilled. And it's I was just thinking as as I was writing this, very timely because we are going through the World Cup, the Muggle World Cup here. Uh, and I mean how expensive are those tickets? How far do people travel for like a very long time? Uh, and a lot of money is is is uh the uh answers to that. So I can only imagine uh how similar it is in the wizarding world. So they are excited, they all day, they they get ready, they have quick breakfast, then some of them are sleeping in because they have things to do and they can operate later, but unfortunately, most of them have to take the port key. So they have a quick breakfast, they are trying their best at Muggle clothes, and I am looking forward to it's gonna be such a fun combo of 90s wizard trying to dress as a 90s muggle. I think that that is gonna be super fun. So I think it's Minota that Mr. Weezy's wearing some jeans, but they're like he's it's like a golf outfit at the same time, like something something weird like that. So that's gonna be very, very funny to see. So they have a quick breakfast and they begin walking. They have their bags packed. And this is another great chance for a beautiful tour of the English countryside. It's really beautiful, so I'm I'm I'm hoping to see that. Uh they all and then along the way, they pick up the Diggeries. So Amos Diggery, and then it's kind of funny how Cedric jumps down from a tree. I mean, I I don't even know if that's like is that what? Like anyway, so they they they meet them. I'm alright if he wants to jump down from a tree if he really wants. I mean, that's cool, I guess. So they meet Cedric, uh, and uh he's uh clearly a strapping young lad, very nice, he shakes their hands, uh, and I definitely uh as they walk, uh before right before they get to the port key, I definitely want Amos to be talking to Harry about how the famous Harry Potter was beaten by Cedric Diggory and Quidditch last year, and you know, I definitely I enjoy uh Amos's character is another interesting one that I am very excited to track because jumping ahead a little bit, when he collapses over Cedric's body at the end of this story, I want that to be such a moment of like, gosh, like it is really heartbreaking. And I think we get that by setting him up as kind of, you know, kind of an uppity kind of guy. He's he's very he's very proud of his son, and that's kind of what I want to set up here, you know. He's very proud of his son, and he is willing to, you know, sing his praises uh to the sky. And I think that is uh important thing because it shows that he is uh, again, you know, a little uptight about things, but he's also very proud of his son. So when he kind of collapses and we feel such compassion for him, it's kind of a moment of unity because we're kind of we're setting aside our feelings of, you know, he's kind of annoying. No, no, no. We're kind of setting that aside in that moment, and we see just how devastated he is. So I want to set that up. Not to put a grim note on it, but that is what I'm trying to set up with that conversation. So he is talking to Harry Balquidic, but soon enough they arrive, and here it is, they have the uh the the the port key on Stoteshead Hill. They are ready to go, they circle around Mr. Weasley, uh, and I will say I love how the film did it like this this dramatic run-up, and then it's a boot. I d I do kind of like that. It's kind of uh a little anticlimactic. So we don't have to do that exactly, but I definitely want to see the old boot, and Ron's and Harry are a little like, what? It's a mangy old boot, and Fred and Roger's like, well, it's not just any mangy old boot, and they all kind of get around in a circle. They lie down, they put their hands on it. Michael Ruiz is looking at it watch, he said, three, two, one. And we we see the jerk behind the navel, they rushed up into the sky, the clouds, you know, collapse, the sky is spinning, you know, we see the magic, we see, we see these flashes of light, and just like that, they're sucked through this portal, and our episode ends. I am very much looking forward to that episode. That is gonna be such such a cool one, but sorry to say, we've got another episode to get to, so we should start this off really quick.

Episode two opens with another quiet forest

They land in a forest. Huh. I feel like we were just in a forest. Yes, I want that to be a parallel. Because who are we shortly gonna see? The Death Eaters. So, uh again, I want to open episode two on a nice quiet forest. But this one is not dark and mysterious. This one is light. This one is much more cheerful, and you know, they're they're kind of enjoying it. They are the the birds are chirping, the sun is shining, it is daytime, it is much more cheerful, and then we kind of hear this like the the twang, the the cries begin to echo louder and louder, and then a flash of light, they all drop to the ground. And they're panting, and they're what's going on? They're looking around. Uh, some of them, I think it's uh Amos, Arthur, and Cedric kind of do that weird like bicycle thing in the air, and they can land on their feet. I think that's low-key kind of stupid. I am okay if they just I do want them to land on their feet. So so maybe they they just land on their feet and everyone else just kind of falls to the ground. Very important here. Cedric walks over to Harry, helps him up, uh, and they are because I want them to have a good relationship. That's very important that they have. Relationship. So they are starting off strong. Cedric is, you know, clearly a gentleman, so he helps Harry up, and there we go. And we begin to kind of look around more and we walk through the forest, and this is kind of where we begin to really get into the Quidditch World Cup. So this is an interesting sequence. So here's how I want to kind of lay out this episode. So this is going to be the whole episode of the Quidditch World Cup. But here's the thing: a lot of it is similar to the books, and there are only if there are, I think there are two major things that I want to really highlight here. So that is what we're going to do. So let's start with the first one. The first one is I want Harry walking throughout the camp to be like, whoa. There's a lot of people here, and there are a lot of magical cultures. There are a lot like he's seeing Friendsome Hogwarts, but that's a small slice of his of his world here. We're seeing Bulgarian flags and Irish flags and the Salem Witches Institute flags and you know all these things that are that are everywhere, and he's beginning to realize just how big the wizarding world is. That's pretty crazy. It's almost like it's almost like we're drawing Harry closer to the outside world with this. I mean, who would have thunk it? So as he's walking around the camp, I definitely want that. Another super, super, super important part of this whole moment is Ludo Bagman. We are, I am so devastated that we did not see Ludo Bagman in the films. Uh uh Bagman and Crouch is what this chapter is called. Uh they all make their way to their campsite, they have these beautiful tents, uh, and then bar uh Bagman and Crouch come by, and of course, Percy is bows very low to Mr. Crouch and offers him tea. And Mr. Crouch says, Oh, weather be yeah, sure. Like he's clearly cannot care less. And Bagman is a very rambunctious fellow. Uh, he is very excited for the Quidditch World Cup and he makes a huge bet with the Weasley twins. Uh, Fred and George say that uh they think that if that Ireland's gonna uh win, but Crum is gonna catch the snitch, they they bet all their earnings on it, and Bagman takes them up on it, of course, much to Arthur's dismay. Uh or should I say, Arthur's dismay on the behalf of Molly, because he is quite amused at this whole situation. So the camp is lively, and there are people, there are people everywhere, and things are happening, and the air of excitement is upon us. But soon the the match is going to happen. So as night falls, lanterns light the path through the forest to the stadium. And honestly, I think we all know what's going on here. Uh the Quidditch World Cup is very much uh a uh it's a super cool part of this whole thing. I mean, and I mean it is uh devastating that we didn't get that in the film. So already we're seeing in this first episode, I mentioned how a lot of the things that were not in the film we're getting here, we're getting all of it. You know, we're getting Harry's time at Four Perfect Drive, which wasn't even there. Uh, we have the journey, we have Luda Bagman, we have all of that. So that is gonna be uh a very important thing. I also want to mention that we do meet Winky very briefly. Winky is coming along with Mr. Crouch, so we know who she is uh going going into this. So the Quidditch World Cup happens. I'm just gonna say that. I don't think it's worth spending time, you know, analyzing every move that they make. Because the truth is it's gonna be awesome either way, and I don't think they have to really do anything too deep. It's just Quidditch, it's awesome, it's gonna be fast-paced. I mean, if what we saw, here's here's what I will say. I like the beginning of it in the film. It's cool, it's cool. Um, I like especially how when we saw Crumb kind of getting introduced, and that's kind of like how it is in in the mugle world too. Like we have like the star players, and that's kind of how it is. That's what sporting is. And I seeing him jet around, like the feeling of speed was so present. Uh, seeing him kind of do tricks on his broom, and you could tell that he was just like he was just warming up. So that feeling of like, whoa, like these are these are pros. I want there to be a massive difference between, you know, Gryffindor House Quidditch and I mean, like the professionals, the Quidditch World Cup, like we're about to see Spain and Argentina play in the Muggle World, uh, which they might even have already played by the time you're listening to this. So, anyway, uh that's gonna be super cool. They can't mess it up. Quiddish World Cup, awesome. The only way they can mess it up is if they don't include it, which would be an absolutely preposterous moment in my life if I was watching this and uh uh Fudge was there and he said, Let the games begin, and he cast the snitch, and then we cut to the tent. If that's what happens, I am going to crash out, I swear. No, no, no. We're getting we're getting the Quidditch World Cup. So we go through all that, uh, and I'm alright if once they win and they're cheering, then we cut back to the tent. So that's that's okay, but we have the whole thing. Uh Ireland wins, the Kreb catches catch the the snitch, and then I also want to see uh I want to see Fred and George, Ludo Bagman hand Fred and George their bag of gold, because as we know, it is leprechaun gold. It is not real. So that is gonna be too bad for them, and they're gonna have to track them down. So they win, they cut back to the tent, uh the festivities are roaring, you know, they have their fires and music and parties and everyone's singing and eating and drinking, and it's really a great time. Again, I want this feeling of camaraderie, and I want especially, you know, this feeling of kind of global connection, because I even again, parallel to the mug world, I'm seeing all these memes now with with the World Cup happening of like the World Cup is probably the closest we're gonna get to world peace. Like, yeah, it's it's competition, but it's it's good competition, you know? That's that's kind of the feeling I want. That maybe we see that you know the Bulgarians, they're I'm sure they're not you know happy, but they're still arm in arm, they're still singing, they're still they're still enjoying the moment, they're still appreciating Quidditch and and celebration and the company of those international people around them. That's what I want to see. I want to have a nice like you-go wizards. Like you guys are you guys are doing it. So that's what I really want to be feeling. Because, I will say, because it's all gonna come crashing down. Naturally, we can't have we can't have good things in the story. No, no, no, no, no. Good things only mean mean bad things. There you go. Lesson, literary lesson number one. If you have a good thing, it must be bad. Which is honestly kind of kind of true. So the festivities are roaring, and it gets it gets crazy. Like we hear there's the fires are going ever brighter. Even across, like, Harry's looking out, and he sees like those fires are huge. Like, what are these what are these people doing? And Mrs. Mr. Mr. Weasley kind of comes out too and is like, what are those? And that's kind of the moment where Harry's confused, is like, what? Because he's in a new world, but Mr. Weasley comes out also and kind of looks out at the horizon at the camp and sees these fires kind of burning. And that's the moment where we kind of get this switch of like, oh, like what's going on? And there are, I mean, people are yelling and dancing and screaming, and like it's this like it's this very just like Vernon, you know, in a more lighthearted sense, he wanted Harry to get out of the house, he didn't want Harry to have what he wants. Very, very tight friction there. That's what we're seeing here, too. We have this the the friction of the party, and then there's like there's something else happening, and I don't like we don't know what it is yet. It's kind of that like a border between like laughing and crying, like how like like love and hate are so similar but so different, laughing and crying are so different but so similar. That's that that's that's the feeling I want. Like, what is going on? And then we slowly begin to realize that this is not you know, these aren't festivities, like something's going on. There is something wrong in this camp. So Mr. Weasley says says like he rushes back and he says, Okay, um, let's like pack up your things. Like, there's there's something going on, we're gonna we're gonna get out of here. And they are the kids don't really believe him at first, but then something outside like triggers him. Like, there's some huge explosion, there's some massive something, like the fire is really beginning to spread. And this moment in the film is one of my favorites. Seeing the Death Eaters marching through the camp. And I will say it is terrible. Terrible in the sense that it is the most cheesy thing ever. But I will say it is very effective. Here's why I think it's a little cheesy. They have like the skull masks and the pointed hats and they're, you know, chanting as they're as as they're going. I will say, very effective, especially the chant is like very scary. I'm cutting that. That's not uh that we're not worth we aren't doing that because they are much more dignified. But the masks are good, and this is I think a good moment to discuss the Death Eater dress. Like, what do they wear? Because they they have such a distinct uniform and it changes. The one you know, this one in this film is terrible. Next film, oh man, are are they slick or what? Like, get get get me a Death Eater mask. Like, those things are so cool. I have the huge um Harry Potter page to screen book that has a whole you know uh you know section dedicated to the Death Eater's masks and costumes, and they are so cool. And I understand that they're not exactly the same, but Order of the Phoenix Death Eater masks are peak. I absolutely want to see those. So that's the kind of style I want. And I don't want to they aren't in a line, they aren't chanting, but they are causing chaos. And it is it is slow, dignified, controlled chaos. That's what I want to see here. Because the death the the the death eaters are nothing if not cordial. You know, they are they are very powerful, they are very organized, they are cool, calm, and collected, they are they are snakes. That's kind of the feel. They are snakes in the grass, they don't, you know, they aren't like an army, but they are their own army. That's the feeling here, that they are pressing ever closer. And Harry sees them, and that's kind of the bolt of fear in his heart that he feels. And they get out of there. So the trio, I mean, the chaos is palpable. Now people are screaming. Now the fires are not bonfires, but tense on fire. Harry, Ron, and Hermione, they they they run. They just run. They run into the forest, and Harry thinks he dropped his wand, and they find Malfoy. This is the first moment that we see the true Malfoy because he is he is standing there and he is calm and cool, and he's looking at his at his his dad, probably down there, and this is kind of the moment that we really begin to see Death Eater Malfoy. But the trio has no time, they they talk briefly, but things are happening all around them. And I like this kind of feeling in the forest of kind of people appearing and disappearing, people appearing, disappearing, like they don't really know what's going on. It's so confusing. Harry can't find his wand. Harry doesn't know like what's going on. And here is the sequence of events. They are in the forest. First person they see, besides so, so they're done with Mouthboy, they get away from him. First person they see, Ludo Bagman. They see it, and and they are there currently invisible. You know, they are in the they're in the night, it is dark. They see Bagman kind of burst out of the forest, he's panting, he's panicking, he's looking around, and he and he runs back in. And they think, gosh, like, where, where, where is he going? Second person they see, not right after, maybe a few moments after, is Winky. And Winky, there's like a there's like a spell on her or something. She's like trying to, she's she's like walking through like molasses, trying to get somewhere, and it's like, what's going on with that? But the most important person we see uh is not like you know, I I don't want to see uh I don't want it to be too obvious who it is, but maybe like Harry catches their eye briefly or something like that. Um or I I don't think maybe maybe David Tennant maybe shouldn't see him. I love calling him David Tennant. So Bar of course it's Barney Croucher Jr. who is in the forest, and then Harry and Hermione at the the trio, they know clearly that someone is there, but this someone is being very quiet. And then they hear, they hear this this spell, this incantation, and they they Harry initially thinks that it is the killing curse because this blast of green light, but he realizes that it isn't as it flies out into the sky. And again, this is such an important moment, the dark mark. This is the first time we see it. Uh he Harry is so transfixed by the dark mark he doesn't even notice that David Tennant is now gone. He is he has disappeared. So we see the dark mark in the sky, and this is another moment, just like the Death Eater uniforms, like we are hitting the ground running. We don't know what the what the dark mark really means yet, but the reactions of the people around Harry should be enough. Ron and Hermione are are dumbfounded. They see it, and it's like something cold is grabbing their heart and twisting, like it's this horrible, horrible sight. This huge skull, this huge green floating skull, and this huge snake roiling out of its mouth into the sky. I mean, it is a terrifying sight. But they can't get too good a look because soon ministry wizards burst out of of of the woods, they they they apparate, they appear, and they cast a spell, they they they cast a stupefying spell at the trio, they duck just in time. Mr. Weezy runs up and says, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, because it is his kid and and and his friends. Barty Crouch runs up to them and he says, Which one of you did it? He is livid. He was so calm before, now he is livid. He says, Which one of you did it? He's pointing to the dark mark, the the shadow, the the ministry wizards now look up, and they too, these grown aurores, they are terrified as well. And of course, Arthur says, None of them could have done it. Are you crazy? None of them could have done it. Uh Bartercrush doesn't believe them. But a ministry wizard then goes into the woods and finds the Winky with a wand next to her. And that is the wand that they found cast the dark mark. So this night is this night is crazy. This night is crazy. They are they have been being tugged left and right. This is just, I mean, they have really been going uh at at Mach 5 this whole time. It is a intense, it is it is turning left and right, it is dark, it is it is brooding, it is the true story really beginning to unfold. The power of dark magic is before our eyes at every turn, and that is exactly where we end this episode. They file back to their tent, and the episode ends. And just like that, season four is underway. This is one of the longest episodes we have ever done, and boy was it worth it. I mean, it takes I I I forget how intense this is. How I mean, how my heart was pounding uh discussing this. This is such an exciting scene. These two episodes are really gonna kick off this season super well. It is just a shame that we didn't get this heart pounding feeling in the film. But now that we have two, I'm hoping, two hours to kind of explore this this opening, that's like the length of the whole film. So we are really gonna enjoy it.
