After last week, I am so happy to be back because we had a fantastic start to season four of Tea Leaves, our version of the Harry Potter TV show. We are now in season four, like I said, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. We kicked it off last week with a bang. We hit the first nine chapters of the story. If you have not heard that episode, I would highly recommend you do. It is the longest and one of the best I think we've done of this series and maybe of the whole show. So definitely check that out. That's the very first link in the show notes below if you want to listen to that episode, which I highly recommend you do. But today we are plowing ever forward. We have more story to get to. So we will be discussing episodes three and four of season four, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Things are gonna start to get a little crazy because Maddie Moody is gonna join the stage. We're gonna learn more about the Tri Wizard Tournament. So a lot of the key elements that are gonna define this story and therefore the beginning of the true conflict of this arc are going to begin in this episode. So this is a pretty cool time, I think. I'm very hopeful that you will join me for this whole episode, uh, and I think we're gonna have a lot of fun. So uh I hope you will stick around. So without further ado, let's get into today's episode.

We open on another forest

As we do with every tea leaves, we must begin this episode with a quick recap of our last installment. That was episode 340, seasons four, episodes one and two. Again, that episode is linked down below. I highly recommend you listen to that before this one to get some good context. But here is a quick little summary, uh high-level overview of what we discussed. So we begin with setting our goals for the season, and then we began episode one in a forest at night. We didn't know where. It turns out it was uh a the place where Voldemort was hiding just after the events of the Philosopher's Stone. We follow him, kind of his his return back to somewhat power, and then we got to Frank and uh the groundskeeper who went in and was fortunately killed. Uh, and then we had Harry kind of experiencing that as a dream, because that's kind of how the story begins. And then we have his life at the at Fort Privilege Drive, and then he gets invited to the Quidditch World Cup. So it's a a pretty fun, uh, pretty fun uh episode that the episode ended with Harry arriving at the borough, and episode two begins with the morning uh that they leave for the Quiddish World Cup, they meet the Diggeries, they find the port key, uh, they take their portkey to the grounds, find their spot, it's really cool. They see Bagman and Bartycratch Jr., they see all their friends, the wizarding world, and they have the cup, it's amazing. And then, of course, the Death Eaters attack, and the end of that episode is they are all filing back into their tent after that horrible, horrible night of Dark Marks and Muggle Tortures and Winky getting accused of casting the dark marks. So, really a very difficult time, I think, for for the whole wizarding world in that moment. And now we are beginning episode three. So we open episode three on a forest. This forest is not exactly like the one before. So I should point this out. We've we've started every single episode in this season so far, that is to say, the last two episodes, now three, with a forest, and that is because I want to show the intersection between worlds. That's a major theme. That's gonna you know, drawing Harry close to the outside world was one of our goals, and that's kind of what I'm trying to get at here. We are beginning to spin the idea of dark magic infiltrating the wizarding world. We began episode one with a dark forest, where Voldemort was. We began episode two with a light, wonderful forest, uh which which was uh the uh uh Quidditch Grounds. And then now we are here in episode three, and it's similar, you know, it is it is definitely similar. We have the the the Quidditch Ground Forest, the Quidditch Ground where they are actually uh going, you know, where where they were staying, and it's kind of in between. That's that's what I really want. I want this to be something of of an in-between. So it's not exactly this dark, doom, and gloom, but there's definitely an air of something. It's definitely there's there's something hanging over the grounds of of the uh Quidditch pitch. And that's because something horrible happened the night before. So people are walking through the uh you know the the the wreckage, these burned down tents, you know, maybe people have been hurt or or been missing, people are looking. Like there's defin like this isn't a this isn't a kind of morning after everyone's like sleepy and their heads hurt because they were up, you know, up laid and you know, having having a party. Like, it's not that kind of air, which would be more more pleasant, but this is kind of much, much more subdued, and there's that really dark undercurrent, that that knowledge of kind of what happened. And I actually was kind of thinking about like the dark mark obviously is not gonna stay in the sky forever, so by now it's gone, but I would I would think a cool addition is like it kind of leaves a scar in the sky almost. So they can it's it's not like you know it's a faint outline now. You know, I think it's just like there's like clearly some like like the air is kind of bending around that one spot, like some like it's it's colds are up there, like something like that, where uh there's there's clearly like some some gash that was left in kind of the fabric of of you know being up in that in that spot because the dark mark is like the ultimate expression of evil, and that's why the Death Eaters have it tattooed on their arms. That is their dark mark, and of course that's why they cast it over the you know places where there have been death. It's a symbol that was used in the first war, you know, when uh all these disappearances and all the all the confusion is really ramping up. So I think it's important for us now with that additional context of having gone through the story many, many, many, many times. Now that we see the dark mark being cast over these kinds of places, we can be begin to understand that the confusion in which they were previously cast is slowly beginning to unfold again. And that's kind of what I want to get out of this morning scene, is that we see the forest that's kind of in between the dark forest where Voldemort was and the light one that that opened episode two. We're kind of in between there. So what I'm trying to show is this bleed, like these two worlds are bleeding together. And I think the scar in the sky, the dark mark, the the ruins, this is the the subdued air, I think people, first of all, it's it's empty, like there's no one there. Uh it's you know, it's it's for lack of a better word, the air is dead. Uh so I think that is definitely a uh an important part of this. But the story unfolds with the Weaslies and Hare. I think they are they are definitely there. But the line for the pork key is out the forest, uh, we can say, and I think that is important because people are trying to get out. And not everyone was able to leave. I think that's that's important to say because of course uh the weaslies and harey had to go through kind of an an ordeal to get there with their port key. And I think we shouldn't just kind of gloss over that. We aren't quite at the point where travel isn't exactly a problem. Like Harry and Ronner Mighty, like for example, in Deathly Hollows, I was I was thinking about that. They just operated everywhere, like there's no port key, there was no there was no limit on where they could go, so to like like I mean, of course, of course there was, but uh they just you know they're they it was much easier for them to kind of go far and wide. But with we're still in the point, you know, in the story where people can operate, and maybe like sidelong apparition really wasn't uh I don't know, it wasn't really a thing at this point for the author. So it was kind of the the idea that you know you had like magical travel was possible, but in different forms, and those forms lent themselves to some restrictions that events like these might you know cause friction with. That is to say, they have to wait to leave, and that is definitely going to kind of crop up in other uh you know with with other situations, and that's why there are some people left. So there are some people who who got out as quick as they can, who can maybe operate, and some people who had to wait like them. So I think it's important that we show that some have gone and some have not, but not by choice. So they are kind of wandering through these grounds, and I'm not sure. I was kind of thinking about what do they see, you know, what do what do they see here? I think I'm not sure about like bones. I think that's a little intense for just the for the first like encounter with death eaters. I think I don't want to see like just corpses like littering the field. Like, no, I think it it wasn't that kind of intrusion that the death eaters even wanted. I mean, seeing blood, like a blood like a spatter of blood on a tent might be enough because I'm not sure actually, now that I'm thinking about it, I'm not sure if it was enumerated, you know, how many people died slash were hurt, but I think it's kind of implied that it wasn't a bloodbath. Like it's not like you know, people, it wasn't like a huge massacre, but I think there was definitely injury. Like, this wasn't like a show of power that caused panic. No, it was the threat of real danger. And that could be from the fires that the death theaters were setting, but it could also be from the fact that they were genuinely hurting people, and the muggles are not uh any exception. That's that's for sure. We didn't have a chance to really dive into them, but I think it's important to note that the Muggles were absolutely part of it. They're a big part of uh Voldemort's campaign, and it is for sure uh a necessary part of this scene that are or of you know of the Death Eater Invasion that we see the Muggles being tortured, which is really awful. It's not quite as visceral as I think we are get we are getting to, but it is it is not pleasant in the slightest, that's for sure. So the Weaslies and Harry, they're they're they exit their tent in the morning, and again, that that kind of solemn air, that quietness, you know, in this forest, not quite Voldemort, it's not quite what it was before, you know. It's kind of this this this mix, like we're seeing the intersection. That's what I'm gonna get at it. They step out of the tent, they feel that air, and they they know they have to get out of there. So they're not quite panicked, you know. Uh I think that is that is definitely or they're they're kind of past that because they know the danger's gone. Uh, and I think there's there shouldn't be a suggestion that the death eaters are going to return, because that would kind of take away that air of stillness. So I think it's important that the death eaters stay away, but that there is still that air of stillness. So the Weaslies get out of their tent and they they pack up their stuff and they're kind of quiet, they're kind of thinking, like, especially Mr. Weasley, he's not quite sure what's going on, because he spent all night, you know, out, you know, looking for culprits and looking for, you know, well, I guess kind of looking for Barty Crutch Jr., although they don't they don't really know it yet. So he had an intense night, and they're trying to get information out of him. Here on her mind, you're asking, like, what the heck's going on? And he can't really say anything because he doesn't want to give away too much, but he also doesn't know anything. So it's kind of this delicate balance between like how much do you keep and how much do you say. And I think in this uh in episode four, I think is going to be a much uh uh episode three, rather. This episode, we're gonna get another examination on that. So ministry information is another theme that we are introducing right now. So they make their way across the grounds, all their stuff with their tent. They join the line for the the port key. And I think this is the moment also where we can set up another situation, and that occurred to me as Neville. So Neville is the only person, and this is gonna be like a very tangential kind of setup that we have going on here, because Neville uh is the only one of Harry's friends who did not go to the Quiddish World Cup. Uh, and I think that's too bad because we had a really good opportunity with the torture of Muggles. I'm not, you know, it's a kind of a morbid outlook on it, but I think we would have had a really good moment with Neville, you know, looking up at those muggles, and and you know, the only thing he can think of is is his own family. I think that would have been a heart-wrenching moment to see. And honestly, if anything, I'm a little glad that we didn't see that because I feel like I that that that would have been horrible to uh horrible to watch. But we can get something similar, and we can kind of uh because what we're building up towards is in the very next episode, in fact, is we are going to be discussing Moody's first lesson, and that is where we uh I mentioned that that scene in the film where we have Neville looking out the window and it's raining and we see the tear falling from the stained glass window figure's eye. That is a kind of vibe that we are kind of approaching. So we have to set that up because if we don't, if we if we kind of get there and we are told that Neville has had this horrible past, and then we kind of see that he doesn't, you know, is still reeling from it in a sense, it wouldn't mean that much, you know, you know what I'm saying? It wouldn't mean all that much if that is kind of what we get out of it. But if we have a scene where we see these muggles being tortured like we did, and then while the while the Weezes and Harry are standing in line to get their porky home, we see that there are other, you know, uh Harry's friends are there, because I think he saw Seamus Finnegan and Dean Thomas. I think they were the ones that he was talking to. Uh but I mean, of course, among others, you know, it's not like they're they're the only ones. So I think he should have a conversation with them, maybe, and not necessarily with words, but they just kind of like see each other and like you know, acknowledge each other's presence. And I think that is important because Harry's, you know, Hogwarts and Harry's friends are known for being grambunctious and they're teenagers, and especially they're entering, you know, now that they're 14, and you know, things are getting a little more rowdy. So I think a moment like that, a very subdued moment, kind of in in accordance with this more, you know, morose air at at the camp, I think a moment like that would show us kind of the magnitude. Because burnt tents are something, but torturing buggles are something else. Uh, and I think that is important to note. So they're standing in line and they want to go home. Eventually they they they get their port key uh with uh with with the diggeries, they they get their port key and they and they walk home. And it is, I mean, it's it's a rough reception when they get to the borough because of course Molly is so so worried about them, and I am I don't blame her in the slightest. I think that is a very that's a very appropriate reaction because she got you know the paper, the news. I don't know if it means necessarily was the paper, but of course the news spreads like wildfire with something like that. So the the news of the dark mark spread, and she did not know who was hurt and who was not. That is really scary. I don't blame her at all. So they get back to the borough, and it's like they're coming home from war almost. Mrs. Weasley is so relieved to see that all of her family and Harry, everyone is safe, and absolutely everyone is fine, but still there there's that there's that little hint, there's that little you know dark kernel that even the borough couldn't quite dispel from Harry's heart, you know, that that that memory of what happened. So it's a really cool, uh uh, you know, a very cool, I mean, literally, you know, at atmosphere that they are leaving in and that they return to. And I think that's that's also important that maybe they they don't come back in the shining sun. I'm like the scene that I'm imagining is kind of silenced. Like Mrs. Weasley clearly isn't kind of blubbering. I think that's maybe one of the things that I don't like about her character so much is that she often blubbers, especially in the book. Like uh she kind of you know is is talking a lot when she when she's nervous and she kind of, you know, I think she should show some integrity uh in this moment, in the sense that when they return home, this is exactly the scene that I that I'm envisioning. They kind of so they they portkey back to Stoad's Head Hill and then they walk uh back across uh I don't know how long the walk is, but you know, they they they make it back, they kind of crush the hill, and Molly's kind of standing out there like watching. I can just see like the furrowed brow, and maybe she's like absent-mindedly kind of like like like playing with so like with a necklace or a piece of like a fraying piece of like whatever. She's clearly nervous, and then she sees them and she doesn't run, she doesn't cry out and stumble and say, Oh, thank gosh. Like she doesn't do anything like that. She just like she furrow brow and maybe a quiet, quiet tear kind of slips out of her eye, and she she she goes and hugs them all, and and and so glad that that they are that they are back. And again, the sun isn't shining. This this isn't, you know, it's not doom and gloom, but there's definitely something there, you know. It's not the the festive kind of uh atmosphere that we had at the borough last episode. And that's important, I will say, that's another point for the uh borough to be a lovely place because we have moments like this that were kind of tainted by events before. I think it's important that we see the borough at its worst as well. And you know, its worst is still pretty good, it's still the borough, but you know, it's there's there's definitely this this this air that has followed them uh back to the borough. So that is really important. So they spend more time with the borough, they've they've finally made it back. Uh and this is a uh, you know, I think the air clears is is important to say because but they're they're going off to Hogwarts. And if they s if they had one or two episodes of happiness and then off to Voldemort Land, I think that would be a shame because there's a lot of cool things to come. And even in this episode alone, we are gonna discuss all that. So let's send these kids off to Hogwarts. They spend more time with the borough. Molly was busy, you know, getting their trunks ready and doing all their laundry and making sure everything was prepared. So they hands them, uh she hands them their their robes, and Ron is Ron is shocked at at his dress robes. They are they're kind of like, I mean, I mean Harry's like, what? And Ron is like, Ron is I do kind of like the ones in the film because clearly it was from like from like Victorian times, like there was definitely something off about those those dress robes. And I do like the scene in the film. It takes place much, much later when they're actually at Hogwarts, but in the book it happens at the borough. So that is, I think, that kind of scene I want to see where he is just like he can't believe in his lace, and it's like it's so frilly, and it's something that is not he would never wear. So uh I also in this moment I also want to get some uh empathy from Harry about money because that's a big theme, is that Harry's one little one little kid and he has fortune, and uh the Weasleys are a big family who need the money much more than he does, and they don't have much at all. So that's the kind of thing that uh I that Harry would feel for on about, but we don't have to spend too long on that, but I do want to build that build that uh dynamic. So they got the dress soaps, they packed their trunk there, they're ready to go. The very last thing that I want to see before that is Amos Diggory. So he appears in the fireplace kind of the morning of um they are packing up. It's you know, it's not like right before they leave, but it is definitely uh, you know, in uh in and around that time. And this is a this is an important moment because we are finally getting Mad Eye Moody. And it's important to say that at this point, Mad Eye is Mad Eye. It it it is him, it's not Barty Crouch. So when I think that's that's you know, it's that's very subtle and it makes basically no difference for the story, but I I kind of like knowing that throughout all this and when Amos is talking to Arthur. Well, actually, actually, at this point it's not, because the what what Amos comes in into the fireplace to talk to Arthur about is there was a disturbance at Mount I Moody's place. Uh he has dust bins that he uh that he has enchanted to attack intruders, and there was reportedly a disturbance at his residence, and the mugle police showed up and one of the trash bins was still uh uh going off. So Arthur, Amos said Arthur had to go uh smooth things over, which of course he did. So the but the underlying uh backstory here is that Mad Eye Moody was fast asleep, and Bardicretcher Jr. broke in and uh unfortunately uh su beat him in whatever confrontation they had and put him in his man his own magical trunk, made polyjuice, and is now Madeye Moody. So we've we've that is uh done and done. So Arthur is now going out to talk to Bardicrutch Jr. So that's a little uh unsettling to think about. But in all other news, they must go to Hogwarts. So they have some ministry cars, they pile in and they get going. So this was a packed first sequence of the episode. This is, I mean, gonna be a good chunk, I'm I'm hoping. It's definitely not a you know the whole thing, but it's important to set this scene. So we've got kind of the first chunk of the episode out of the way, but we have more very important things to get to in this episode. So let's move on.

Off to Hogwarts!

Hogwarts station is upon them. Uh, but first they must get on the Hogwarts Express. So the Weases and Harry arrive at King's Cross Station, they are ready to go. They go through the platform. Nothing crazy happens. I think this is one of those rare times where the the boarding process of the Hogwarts Express is pretty calm. But the most important part is Charlie Weasley. Because Charlie Weasley says, you know, he's there, you know, for some reason. I don't know why he's chose to be there, but he's there anyway. And he says, Good luck everyone, uh, see you sooner than you think, is what he says. He says he will see them sooner than they think, and that is uh a big hint because of course we have quite the tournament coming up. And Harry and Ron want to know what's the what's what's going on, you know, what's going on because of course Percy has also been hinting at something going on at the ministry, you know, something that he will have to return to Hogwarts for. So there. There's there's something is going on. There is a stir in the air, and they know that something is going to happen. So they get on the Hogwarts Express and it is off to Scotland. Beautiful train ride, I must say. I took the same one. So I must say it is a uh uh quite the eventful train ride, however, because they are not sitting in silence for eight hours. There is stuff that goes on. So the big one is Draco. So Draco is causing trouble as always. Uh he is he is back at it at at the train car. I think the the first what happens is uh so okay, let me back up. There are three things that I want to have happen on this train ride, and they will happen in this order. First, they find their compartment and they sit down. So that's so and then this is the first thing. So they sit down and then they hear Draco talking very loudly that his father, Lucius, wanted to send him to Dermstrang, which is a uh I mean, I don't think we get exactly where it is, but it's in Northern Europe somewhere. It's a magical score in in Northern Europe that notoriously teaches dark magic. Uh so that is the word on the street that Dermstrang is this evil school, and Draco was about to be sent there. His father wanted to send him there. I don't think we really got the reason why not. I think his he mentioned his uh mother wasn't, it wasn't too happy about that. So that is the first thing because Germstrang is going to be important very soon. So it's important to know that. That's thing number one. Next, however many hours later, you know, these things don't have to be right next to each other. Next is Cho. I do so love how they introduced Cho in the film. I love how they kind of both went out to buy things from the trolley, and then they kind of you know just saw like glance at each other, but you know, Harry clearly likes her, and maybe she likes him, who knows? So I think we're kind of getting into the you know teenage years uh at at Hogwarts. So I think their ch Harry and Cho's relationship is important for sure, because they are kind of, you know, Cho is an important part of the whole Cedric situation, which is kind of the catalyst for Voldemort. So Cho, in a sense, is kind of this this tie to Voldemort's return that Harry's gonna keep with him for many years to come. So it's important that they form a strong bond now. So that is another important thing that I want to have happen. They shouldn't exchange words. I don't want them to have a conversation, that should only be happening later. So that whole ordeal happens, and then the thing three, and perhaps the most important, is that Draco comes to their cart. He's cart, he comes to their compartment, uh, and he is drawn to there by Ron's dress robes, which are draped on the uh on pig's cage, and boy are they terrible. And I think it should like we shouldn't be looking at Ron's robes and saying they aren't that bad. No, they should be terrible. Uh so Draco, like, we should win when Draco stops and laughs, like we should not exactly laugh along with him, but we but we should be like, uh yeah, they're kind of embarrassing embarrassing to have. So I am looking looking forward to that. So Draco talks to them, and he, of course, you know, the usual poking fun, whatever, but then I think he also should say something about like, oh, something, something's happening at Hogwarts, you know, something is something is going on. My you know, my father's telling me all these things, and of course he doesn't tell them anything, and then he walks away. So that is the third thing. That combination of things is going to set us up. So what I love about the story in general is that it's so easy to spin into this kind of series of cat a series of like reactions and then series of kind of results. We set up so many things in this episode, and first of all, we aren't even done, but we set up so many things that it's almost it's it's it's crazy to think. So their their ride is done, and they are getting off the Howard's Express. It is a lovely nighttime, and if we get a few, you know, pointed, you know, wink wink wink style shots of a dark forest as they are walking in, I wouldn't be too mad at that. I actually a shot that popped into my head was as they so they get into the horseless carriages, which won't be horseless for long. Uh sorry, Harry, about that. They get into the horseless carriages and they make their way up. The first years go off with Hagrid. Of course, I mean, they they say hi to Hagrid, and it's you know, it's it's it's pretty cheery. This is this is the vision that I had of of their version of their journey up. So they get in their carriages, and as they go up, we have like, I think a pretty long shot, like maybe even 20 seconds, dare I say, 30 seconds, of we see from afar the horseless carriages making their way up the hill to the castle. So it's uh that's the most important part. From afar, in the you know, the main focus is the is is Hogwarts the castle itself. But we see this little these little twinkling lights of the of the characters making their way, you know, trundling their way up uh the you know the rocky road, uh, through through the gates up to the castle. And here are the most important parts is the first of all, the castle's lit up, so it's looking pretty cool. There are clouds, there are storm clouds gathering above it. So that's a pretty direct omen. But I also want to see the lake and the forest. The forbidden forest is huge and dark and horrifically imposing, especially after the whole ordeal that we had in the Quidditch World Cup when the trio ran into the forest. We had some bad, bad juju going on with Forest Right right now. But that's important, is that we see this dark forest surrounding the castle. Of course, with the other, you know, shots that we've seen throughout the films of the castle, we've clearly seen that uh it is in the wilderness, it is in the Scottish Highlands, you know, which I can attest is is there are a lot of you know mountains and hills and streams, and it's but the big forests. Like the the the the for the forbidden forest is a huge forest, and that is really important. So if you see this huge dark, because again, this is this this is nighttime, you know. We are this is dark. So the lights of the castle are the only true lights we see, along with the lanterns hanging off the horses' carriages. So if the carriages are trundling up, you know, kind of in the distance, we can't really hear them, but we see this huge cast, you know, the cog horse should seem huge, lit up, storm cuts above it, sun, you know, it's it's the we don't see the sun, but it's you know, maybe a little bit of light, just enough to see this huge swath of black forest, you know, kind of swimming out from uh the castle and and the uh lake just below. So there are, you know, those parts are going to be uh are are the most important. So this is intense. This is, I mean, this shot alone should be a very kind of profound moment, is that we are kind of we are coming back to Hogwarts with this story in mind that there is something going on that you know, and that is also why I want to so heavily feature all these moments of people saying like something's happening, something's happening. Because of course they're talking about the Tri Wizard tournament, but the underlying theme should be something's happening, you know, something something is definitely stirring in the wizarding world, and that is the sense that I want to impart onto the audience with this shot. So that is something that I I immediately thought of that eye, we absolutely have to include something like that in the film. Alrighty, so we are now inside. We have made it out of the horses' carriages, they are making their way. Maybe it was kind of drizzling, you know, they they definitely had their cloaks drawn about them, uh, but now they are inside, and it is time for the feast. So the feast should be lovely. I don't want any disturbances. Uh they're just chilling, they're just eating, they're just living loving life. I think that is a good uh that's a good way of going about it. But there are things that must happen, and of course, as there always seem to be. And for the most part, they're pretty lighthearted. The first is Dennis Creevy, Colin Creevy's brother, is starting at Hogwarts, and they uh he introduced him to Harry, who he's starstruck. Another important moment is nearly headless Nick talking about peas causing a disturbance in the uh kitchens with the house elves. So peeves, of course, causing trouble all the time. Uh he set off, I think he he popped a water balloon over the students as they walked in. Uh, and of course, we now nearly have this Nick is telling the trio that uh he is now causing trouble in the in the kitchens with the house elves. And after seeing Winky, after Hermione's kind of gotten more context on what a house elf is and what they do, she is taken aback. She says, What? This food was made by house elves, and she refuses to eat. And uh, so that's gonna uh start our SPEW uh uh campaign here. So those are the more lighthearted things, but unfortunately, story must continue. So after the feast is kind of winding down, Dumbledore gives his usual speech, and in it he says the Quidditch Cup will be cancelled this year, and there is uproar. I mean, for understandably, so Quidditch is like the thing at Hogwarts. Everyone is shocked. Quidditch is like their pride and joy, the players, like that's that's what they live for. Everyone is so so angry. And Domedor's clearly not done. He's gonna say something else, but before he can, a door bangs open. And who else but Mad Eye Moody? I'm not I don't I'm not gonna complain how they did it in the film with with like the storm uh you know on on the ceiling. Like I I think that's you know it it it f serves the purpose well but I think it would be much more effective if the d as double is giving a speech, you know, a door at the end like this, I I can see this scene so clearly. It's not the main door, but it's like some side door, you know, bangs open, and then we we hear like the step clunk, step clunk of a wooden, you know, foot. And and we see, or like a, you know, uh a prosthetic, I guess, a magical prosthetic. I'm not sure if it's wooden or not. So we see him walking across, and we don't we don't see his face, and there it's complete silence as he's walking up the table, and of course his eye is trained on Harry, you know, and and as he walks by the eye, he keeps looking. Uh, you know, so it's like oh that little moment of like, oh gosh. So uh he's you know, though they he step clunks up all the way, shakes hands to Dumbledore, and then goes and sits down. And that's like a very like what the heck kind of moment. And Dumbledore kind of to break the algorithm, he says, Oh, oh, thank you, thank you for joining us, uh Alistor. This is this is our new defense against the dark arts, Professor Professor Moody. And Ron elbows Harry, who's like, oh, that that Professor Moody? Oh gosh, so this is the guy who nuts and chances his his his dustbins. So that's why we have the good introduction. So Moody uh enters the hall. He is now officially in the story. Very exciting. He's gonna be a very fun character to follow. So Dumbledore says, as I was saying, and this is when Barty Crouch steps forward, and they bring up the uh two ministry wizards bring up the uh pedestal with the covered Tri-Wizard Cup. Dumbledore says, the Quidditch Cup is cancelled, but that is for a reason. And he goes on to describe the Tri-Wizard Tournament. He says, This is called the Tri-Wizard Tournament. And for for many, many years, this tournament was too dangerous at Hogwarts because of the high death toll. So for hundreds of years it was discontinued, but now the ministry have put in enough precautions and they have set the age limit to 17, which also brings up some some uproar. Uh, but now they are going to bring the tri-wizard tournament back. And this is the end of the episode, the very last moment. Uh, Dumbledore doesn't use the words Tri-Wizard Tournament. He only describes like this, you know, this this challenge has been discontinued for hundreds of years. You know, he he goes on and he he describes, he says, the age limit is 17, everyone booze. Then he says this year Hogwarts will play host to the Tri-Wizard Tournament. And just like in the film, the cloth shoots off and disappears, and this shining uh this this this shimmering tri-wizard cup is revealed. And that is the end of this episode. Just like that. So we have come to a uh come to a head, because now we are beginning classes. So let's let's move on to episode four.

Episode four begins with classes

Episode four begins with classes, because classes are now beginning. So we go to Herbology for some boober tuber pus extraction, which is lovely stuff, and then off to character magical creatures for the scroots, the blast ended scroots. What a what a time to be alive. Let me let me tell you that. I I'm looking forward to seeing the scroots on the screen. So really to awful stuff. But then uh the trio goes off to, or no, not uh not uh Harry and Ron only, because Hermione has dropped it. Harry and Ron go off to divination, and it is as boring as always. Trelawney gives them a reading, and uh Harry is was uh is officially born in midwinter, and then he says, no, he was actually born in July. So what a what a great time that is. So as they're walking out of that class though, they go into the courtyard, and this is one of the few moments where I'm going to side with the film completely. And that is because in the book, so this is we're we're approaching the scene where a mouthful gets transfigured into a ferret. Great scene, fan absolutely fantastic. In the book, it happens at dinner in the Great Hall. I don't really like that. I like how it happens in the film in the courtyard kind of midday because it should feel kind of off the cuff, like they're all just kind of lounging around, and then Moody rocks up and just like absolutely demolishes him. Like that's that's kind of what I'm going for here. So what so let's let's kind of walk through the scene. So Harry and Ron walk out of that uh class, they're kind of you know a little irked already, but then Draco is loudly reading parts of a read a Skeeter article about uh about Mad Eye Moody and how he had dustbins and how Arthur Weasley had to go cover it up, and of course Malfoy's not being very kind to Mr. Weasley, and that's when Harry mentions that, oh, like, well, your your mom has a horrible look on her face, and that's that's stupid, I guess. And so Malfoy takes offense to that, he gets up, he he he grabs his wand, and when Harry's back is turned, he casts a spell, which Moody then bursts out into the courtyard and blocks and transfigures him into a ferret. And it is like it is rough. It's it's really horrible to watch. I mean, so so Malfoy is getting bounced around, uh, he goes, you know, down some trousers, he really is uh kind of getting tossed about, and that's when McGonagall runs out and sets him right and scolds Moody. Malfoy runs away. And I think Moody should shout like he does in the film, shout something about you know his father and you know, referring to his experience as a dark wizard catcher. So I think that is uh a very appropriate moment for something like that. So this is a good time to introduce Moody. And but but right after this, I want to cut to his class. Uh so right afterwards, we cut straight to a class with Mad Eye Moody, because this is this is the grand opening. You know, him walking up and sitting down. Uh last episode was kind of the soft launch. We're now at the hard launch of Mad Eye Moody. We're sitting down in his class. I think the book, the film, they're both they're both great. I don't think we really have to analyze it. It is exactly right. Uh he gets bugs, he enlarges them, he shows them the curses. Uh, he says they're horribly behind on curses, they must show the anti-curses, but uh what he and Dumbledore have agreed, they also must see the curses themselves. So that's what they spend their class doing, looking at the unforgivable curses. I think looking back on it, it is absolutely incredible. Like, it is nuts to me that he is using the killing curse in the classroom. Like, that is absolutely crazy. Like, I can't like imagine like I'm trying to I was trying to think of like a muggle equivalent, like there really isn't. Like, I was thinking, imagine like for like a biology experiment, let's say, your biology professor like killed an animal right in front of you for the experiment. Like, that's kind of what I'm envisioning here. I mean, that's kind of awful. That's like really awful. The killing curse is like the curse, it is the you know, ultimate expression of dark magic, and he's using it right in front of their eyes. It is that is just awful. Like, it is just I mean, and of course, that is that's the other ones are are not fun either, that's for sure. And I do so like how they did the Imperious Curse where they were having so much fun, and then Moody was like, you know, what what I think his exact the exact line was like, what shall I make her do next? And then you know, he had the the bug, you know, goes over a you know jug of water and says drown herself. And that like instantly is like a whoa, like that's that's not you know, it's like it's kind of a such a step back. I do really like that. So something like that, I I would really appreciate that. And of course, Chris Yard is awful, just awful. He and I mean the fact that he does it right in front of Neville is terrible. So this is where we're getting uh a few threads connecting here and getting back to Neville. So they're walking out of the class, it is awful. And this is where we have Neville looking at the window. I am okay if we don't have a tear running down the Stengless window's cheek because that's very, very redundant, but I want that vibe. And of course, Moody then grabs him and pulls him up. That's where he shows him some books. Of course, Moody's also already thinking about the Trouser tournament uh and getting Harry in there, so he gives Neville the book uh that will eventually inform Harry about the Gilly Weed, uh, gives him a cup of tea and all that. So all this to say, Moody is Moody has the the doctor is in, Moody is is is a torta force, that is, that is for sure. And I want this class to be vivid and visceral and all of that right in their faces. Moody is here to stay. Uh, he is quite a force to be reckoned with. I think uh an unintended consequence is Snape, because of course Snape is also acting a little more nastily. I want to I do want to make that point. Uh this might be because Karkarov is on his way. Uh, it might also be because Moody is a dark is famously a dark wizard catcher, maybe he senses something off. So Snape is particularly nasty. But there are more important things that we must get to in this episode, and there's a very important thing that we must discuss next. So let's move

Beauxbatons and Durmstrang

Some of you with a very keen eye may have noticed that this episode uh has uh, or rather the last episode was a bit scrambled, because the welcoming feast is is home to the introduction to the trial tournament, the wheeling out of the goblet of fire, and the arrival of Beaubaton and Dermstrang. But we didn't do all of those at all. We only introduced her to the Trius Tournament in that scene, and that is for a reason. I don't want the arrival of Beaubaton and Dermstrang to be kind of this kind of flowery event, which it absolutely is in the film. When they arrive, I mean it's cool. That's like I'm not saying it's not like a it's a it's it's not a f it's it's here, here's what I'm saying. It's a fun moment. That's that's what it feels like. It's it's a very fun moment. We see we see the ship uh, you know, first, you know, uh emerge out of the water, and it's super cool. I mean, the the I will say the music is good, I do like the music, and it's it's this very like we like Dermstrang is here, yeah. It's that that kind of feel. And especially their entrance into the Great Hall, it it is interesting and it fits the vibe of the scene, but I'm not sure that's the vibe I'm going for. Because they put on like a little performance, like, yeah, but also like no. So here's why I separated that from so I we are doing that now. Spoiler alert, we're doing that now, but I separated uh their arrival and the introduction of the Obit of Fire uh from that scene because that is kind of that's that's the welcome, that's everyone's here, and if we do it like we do in the film, these students from from afar will seem all too shallow because truth be told, Dermstrang and Bobaton are just like Hogwarts. And I think it would be such a shame if Crum arrives and all we see is a Quidditch player, or Fleur arrives and all we see is a Vila. I think that that would be too bad. And of course, that is all we're gonna see, and that's just how it is. But I want to at least try to give the These schools more credit. So here's how it's going to go down. I think it should still be at night. I think that is that is still okay. But here is what's going to happen. So maybe they are all kind of having dinner. They are there, you know, but this is like this should be kind of a vision of a normal dinner. Like the staff table isn't full, because no one, you know, it's not like they all have to eat at the same time. No. People are going in and out, you know, people are just chilling. Like it's a very relaxed, kind of nonchalant, uh, you know, at atmosphere, because soon that is going to shift. Because out of the out of the window, and here is um just to cover up a plot hole, I think the ship, the dormstrong ship technically appears first, but to cover up uh a uh nice little plot hole there, I think there should be out of the window, out of the large, you know, window, because it is nighttime, they see this this kind of glowing carriage. It's not like it's not literally glowing, but it's this bright carriage, huge, like the size of a house, by you know, getting getting pulled by these huge horses racing through the sky from very far away. And the students all look up, like the silence slowly falls, and like they all kind of as a you know, as as a unit, kind of run outside, kind of like how they do when they're leaving. That's kind of the vibe. And but this is not like a oh wow, like it shouldn't exactly be like that, it should be like kind of like this like awe, like they're almost looking at themselves. That's what I want to really get at with this scene. Uh and that's kind of why I want to separate it, because when these students are looking out at at this at this carriage arriving, they aren't looking at some foreign, you know, ministry delegation. No, it's not like they're these are some, you know, strange people who they you know. These are students, these are them that it's it's it's them. It's literally them. If they went to another school, it that's exactly what it would be, is you know, students traveling to a different school, and that's exactly what we are seeing here is this carriage filled with students that are just like them. I think I maybe Dumbledore mentions that they will be playing host to two schools, so it's not like they don't they don't know what it is. It there uh this shouldn't be a moment of fear, like what the heck is that? No. They they know what it is, but it's just like it's so amazing to see. And the carriage finds its its its runway. I think Haggard can can be there. That's a that's a that that's a fun moment uh with Hagrid there. Um he guides the carriage in, the carriage gracefully comes comes to to the ground. Actually, one thing I I will say, one thing I don't like about the film is that the carriage is not graceful at all. It's like whipping through the air. Like, I I don't really think I want that. I want it to be clearly very magical and very graceful. Because I mean that's that's kind of the the brand of Beaubaton is it's a uh it's it's you know uh the an all women's school. So when when they arrive, you know, they're it's it's a very kind of prim and proper and put together uh you know bunch of students. So I think it would be kind of it's kind of a you know it's a it's an unnecessary juxtaposition if we have this carriage whipping through the sky. And then Madame Maxime, who is this like the the she is the image of like of of of a lady, you know, she's she's all done up and she is clearly has such an aura, but she is you know so so you know polite. So like I mean she is just she is the image of what a what a proper lady is. She doesn't emerge from a whipping about carriage. No, she emerges from from a uh this this this you know huge, graceful, you know, wonderfully orchestrated landing. And that's that's kind of what I what I want to see. So uh but I don't want the reception of the students to kind of be outside, because that that would be kind of strange. So maybe there's there's this kind of situation where and it's kind of how it's something of how it goes on in in the book is that it happens not exactly when they're in the Great Hall, but the students are kind of gathered outside the door to the Great Hall, because of course the door to the outside and the door to the Great Hall are are pretty close together. So they are kind of gathered there. The students are all gathered there, and some are looking out, because like some, they're not all. I think if the entire Hogwarts student body was there, it would be a way too big of a crowd. But like I said, they're not all eating dinner. It's only the students who are eating dinner, maybe a few who could see it out the window who rush up. So it's only, you know, it's only uh, you know, a handful of of the student body who are outside waiting, waiting to greet them. So the students kind of gather outside the door, maybe to the outside, because they they all they want to see what's what's going on. And they see Madame Maxine emerge, and Dumbledore is there, and uh, you know, he he he kisses her hand and helps her nap in the carriage, you know, and they have a very they have a very you know proper exchange, as is Madame Maxine's uh uh demand, and then her students follow. And I think it's a little um caveman-esque, I guess is a good way to put it in in the film, because um the Beaubaton uh students emerge, and it's like Harry and Ron have never seen, you know, a young woman before. It's like it's like the first time they've ever laid eye like I mean, I don't know. But it should be clear that this is, you know, uh uh, and this is kind of like a theme, is that they are very good looking. And I think that that is important because that is going to be a uh you know a plot point for the social life, uh, especially with the Yule Ball. They are going to be hot commodities in the student body, and of course they they are not gonna have any of it. Uh so I think it I mean, I'm not, you know, I don't want them to be uh the the most you know pristine creatures that that we've ever seen, but I think it's important, I think the film does it right that they are, you know, because for example, Fleur is Vila, she's literally part like in inhuman, you know, specimen of beauty. So I think it's it's okay if if if they are very beautiful. I am not uh gonna fight that. I think that that definitely is is an important part for the story. But I don't like Ron's reaction where he's like, oh my god, like his jaws on the floor. It's a little, and I mean, it's a little short-sighted of him. But anyway, the point is they make an entrance. They absolutely make an entrance, and the whole acrobatics thing, that is ridiculous, I'll be totally honest. So they should just kind of make their way inside, uh, in in into the great hall. But next up, I think, is a more kind of like attention-grabbing entrance, and that is that is dermestrang. And I do like how it's done, where the, you know, there's like a and then the students like they're about to go inside, but they see this this this mast break out of the the lake, and they all kind of turn. And it's like, I I like how it's like there's this little it's it's only the crow's nest that they see. So it's this tiny little ship that they think they see, and then it explodes. Like, you know how something is so big it don't it like moves in slow motion? That's that's what I'm what I'm envisioning here. It explodes out out of the lake, this huge thing. And then I I I don't want its sails to be down because when it gonna get up and water is pouring over it, it is this huge, you know, it's almost like a it's not it's like I I I like how they designed it actually in in the film, but it almost feels like it should be bigger. It should be bigger than that, and it's this huge, like, like if if if there was a Viking luxury cruise, that is exactly not not like the actual brand Viking. I think that's a that's an actual luxury cruise line. I mean like you know, the you know, Lindisfarne era of of uh Vikings, like the true Vikings, uh if they had a luxury cruise line, that's exactly what I think this ship should look like. Huge with Viking mast heads, you know, it's clearly a longboat of sorts, but it's you know clearly very built up, so there are cabins, you know, they can they can still like live on the boat because that's where where they do end up living. And what I what I what I'm so clearly seeing is the the masts explode out of the water, the ship is revealed, and then in this huge like unfurling, they unfurl all of their sails at once, and it is like it is a breathtaking moment, I think. So like because I think this is also uh the uh Beauvaton made more of like a like a kind of a graceful entrance, and I think Dermstrang, this is definitely a much more of like a uh knocking down the door kind of kind of situation. And then we see that they're you know they're they're their uh planks go out and they walk across. And here's also something that I envisioned is that we see kind of we see them on the decks. So they are on the decks kind of looking out, and it is this is this moment of I want them to start as kind of a little foreign, like like those people are kind of intimidating, like like very intimidating because they're all they're all they're wearing the same thing, you know, they they look pretty similar, they're clearly very gruff, they're they're you know, they're they're from the north. It's like if it's a very stereotypical entrance. I think that's important to note here is that this is a very stereotypical entrance on both sides, and that's just kind of how it is. I mean, I don't think we should if if we change those kinds of things, we are changing the story, and we're also changing the characters. It's important that Fleur is is you know a lady, and it's important that Crumb is is the kind of gruff and he doesn't really talk to people, and like that's kind of his character, and that's kind of the vibe that we get from this ship. So we see the students and they uh file up, they walk up through the hills, and of course Karkaroff is in the lead with Crumb close behind. Karkoroff is gonna be an an interesting entrance because uh how he interacts with Dumbledore is very different from how Madame Maxime interacts with Dumbledore. They shake hands. I love the description in the book of he, you know, he has a smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes. That is that is perfect for who he is. And I must say, the film, you know, image, the whole how how he was whole, uh his his character was was was constructed, really, really cool. Really, really cool. So big fan of that. So Dern of Trang is here, and now the students all go into the uh great hall, and this is where we have the moment of the goblet of fire. So the students all take a seat, they're like kind of sitting, you know, integrated within each other, but they aren't really talking. Like it's kind of this this strange, like it's like you know, meeting people for the first time. You aren't gonna break out in joyous conversation, but you might make small talk. I mean, Draco would never because he's way, he's probably way too scared of them. Where where does I think Bobaton sits with Ravenclaw, maybe? Whatever it is. There's there isn't much talking because soon uh the uh goblet of fire emerges. In the book, it is McGonagall who brings it out. Uh yeah, I don't think that's quite it. It should be more it should be more momentous. I could totally see it like uh coming down from the ceiling. Honestly, I feel like that's that's that's kind of cool. Is the whole like like Dumbledore uh like he does in the film as he kind of waves his hand across the hall, and it is nighttime, so the fires dim low, and it's like the only lights are like the stars and the in like the the enchanted ceiling. And then from that ceiling, almost like the clouds are like weaving it out of thin air as this this this goblet emerges, and I like the size in the film. I think that that that size is good, and it's clearly you know, it's the there's no fire in it yet, but the goblet of fire is descending down to the center of the room, and this is where he I love how he begins this speech in the film with this echoing, eternal glory, you know, is what awaits the champion. You know, that's that's kind of how he begins. I think that's a really cool thing, because this is where we get the the you know colossus of the Tri was tournament. This is kind of where we begin to feel it, you know, really feel this this adventure brewing. When when we see the cup, it's like this shock of like something is like this this this kind of breaking point. But now that we see the goblet, we kind of s we we begin to understand what the tournament actually means. And Dumbledore pre- uh he he he approaches it and he sets it alight. And this is uh a this is we aren't totally at the end of the episode because I think the very end should be in the common room. So anyway, the the goblet is lit, and this moment is like whoa, like this is kind of crazy. But I don't want to end there because that's like all I feel like we have a lot of episodes that end intensely and open without much action. I want to end, you know, I want to kind of break that cycle, kind of get get some variety in there. I want to end on kind of like a d chill note. So the trio go back up to the common room, and they they are looking out the window at the carriage, they see the students going back to the ship, uh, the derming students going back to the ship. And they are, you know, sitting in the common room thinking, like really reflecting on what this year's gonna bring. Hermione has her spew badges ready to go. Fred and George are kind of talking in hushed tones in the corner. Uh, this is their Ludo Bagman uh conflict that is that is beginning. But of course we don't we don't know that yet. And Harry is just thinking. He's thinking about the scar, he's thinking about his his his you know future, he's thinking about Sirius. And the very end of the episode is they they go up, and Harry is sitting in his bed, he's restless, and he sees Neville and he knows that he is not alone, that that you know the student body is is agitated, and they have quite the year ahead. And there you go. That's the episode. Every week I think, wow, how could we possibly get to an hour? And somehow we always do it.
