We've been going through each and every moment of the story on this series, writing each individual scene, and we are now finally reaching some very exciting moments in the Goblet of Fire. So whatever it is, happy birthday, Harry. Um but we have a great episode to get to. So without further ado, let's get into today's episode.

As we always do, we will begin this episode with a quick recap of last week's episode, which will of course be linked in the show notes below. That was episode 341, season four, the Goblet of Fire, episodes three and four. So we got uh some some pretty good progress here. We opened uh episode three with the forest at the Quidditch World Cup. This was after the events of that horrible night. Um they return to the borough, they get all their affairs in order, and they uh pack for Hogwarts, they go off to the Hogwarts Express, and you know, Charlie's hinting, oh, something might be happening on the Hogwarts Express, Draco's hinting that something might be happening, Harry meets Cho for the first time. Uh, so it's a very, very fun uh time. Uh they go to Hogwarts. I mean, that's that's that's the whole thing. Then we have Dennis Creevy, uh nearly headless Nick, who talks about house cells, which sets uh sets off for Mione. She is not very happy with that. Uh and then classes begin. Uh so that was that was super fun. And they had that then they started with Herbology, they had care of magical creatures, they met with uh uh uh uh uh the scroots. This is of course this is in the uh episode four. Uh and then we had, of course, Trelawani. Then after that was, I think maybe a most the one of the more important parts, which was uh Moody really got it got introduced because uh Harry went to the Great Hall for dinner, and they uh he exchanged rather nasty words with Malfoy about their families, and Malfoy, when Harry's back was turned, pulled his wand, and Moody stepped in and taught him a lesson by transfiguring him into a ferret. So that's just lovely. Uh and then we have a uh uh we went to the quiet room, the quiet room, the common room for a nice quiet evening, but that was not not uh quiet for long because we ended the episode with the arrival of Dermstrang and Bobaton, so that the the Tri was the tournament truly began. And now here we are in season four, episode five. We are beginning this episode the morning after all those events. So uh the the the schools arrive and everything crazy is happening, and they had they've had classes with Moody, and everything's just kind of roiling in Harry's head. And he wakes up and he's just he's he's really thinking. He's really thinking about what all this means for him. And the very first thing that we're gonna do is Harry's gonna go up to the Allery and he's gonna write to Sirius. So he's telling Sirius about his scar. You know, his scar's been been, you know, tingling, it's been it's it's been hurting a little bit, he's been having these dreams. Of course, the very first uh the the opening moments of this season was Voldemort and his his you know rise his rise back to power. So Harry is not wrong. Harry feels that there's this disturbance going on, and he wants to let Sirius know that. It's important that Sirius is this person that Harry trusts, and that uh Harry feels like he can tell him anything, and that's very important because Harry needs to be confiding these things in in other people. Uh, because he is a uh he's definitely an indicator for what's to come. So that is very important for him. So Harry's to Sirius, lets him know what's going on, but he also tells him to stay hidden because Harry knows, Harry knows deep down his heart. I think this is also um an indication of how well Harry knows Sirius. Uh Harry knows that hearing all these things, Sirius is gonna want to jump to Harry's aid, that he's gonna want to come out of hiding and find Harry. Uh and um, you know, discuss this and maybe, you know, discuss protection for him and all that. So I think that is that's a that's a funny detail, and I think it definitely serves a few purposes. One, like I just said, that he Harry knows Sirius very well. But I think it also shows that Sirius, I think, hasn't really changed. And Sirius as a character in this book is interesting because he isn't quite on the same, like, I think he he goes through, like, in the three books that he appears, I think he goes through three like different phases of his character, which is which is interesting. So we're in like the second phase here. When he's first introduced in the Prisoner of Basketband, he's a prisoner. I mean, he's he's on the run, and for the whole book, that's who we think he is. So it's difficult for us to talk, like we we we don't see him as a godfather, but we see him as finally, you know, someone who Harry can trust. And that's kind of the moment. That's really what what what his character kind of serves as in the Prisoner of Basketband. Because for the longest time, Harry only had really Dumbledore, and he didn't really see Dumbledore very often. And even then, Harry, there were there were things that Harry didn't want to burden him with, and things that Harry wasn't really quite sure, like he could even put into words, like it was it was just Harry's going through a lot, and like as everyone is, and of course, you know, we you know, the average person has Fez family, you know, has Fez family, close friends, you know, someone to confide him, but Harry really didn't have that. Of course, he had Ron and Hermione, but it wasn't quite the same as an adult figure in his life. And of course, that is kind of the the gap that's that Sirius filled. But in the Prisoner of Escuman, it was kind of he wasn't quite there yet, but he was just he was clearly someone that Harry could trust. And now we're kind of in this awkward phase of like, yes, like I think he's becoming more of a godfather, but it's still a little bit kind of stilted almost because they aren't like talking, they're just kind of writing letters, like the Sirius is still on the run, which is you know an important part of his character, and that kind of uh sets up some plot points for for now, and of course, definitely for later. So it's important that we keep that relationship, and then as we move into the Order of the Phoenix, which of course we will be discussing in a few weeks, as that season gets going, uh, we are absolutely going to begin to see more, you know, of of of who he is, and now that we can see him in person, you know, we there's there's a lot more that we can learn about him. So we're in this phase right now of he's kind of becoming a godfather. I think I think he, you know, he he kind of is. But it's not necessarily like what it is in the Order of the Phoenix. Because right now, what he is is just like he's he he's he's a confidant, and that's that's great, that's what Harry needs, but he's not he's not as practical, you know, I guess is a good way of putting it, that that hair as Harry needs. Because like, you know, he doesn't see him very often, so it's it's tough to impart that that information. And that's why we in this episode we are going to see uh them have a conversation face to face, or as as close to face to face as you can get. So that that is gonna be a very, very fun time. I'm definitely looking forward to that. So that's how Harry begins his morning. He wakes up and he goes up to the Allery, and I'm so looking forward to the scenery here, the beautiful Scottish scenery, because we are uh it's it's fall, you know. I think I would guess it's October uh right right now. I don't think we I think I think it is October. Um and it's you know beautiful. I'm sure, you know, maybe the leaves are changing, the forest is, you know, beginning to slowly shed its leaves. Uh so I'm definitely looking forward to that, especially on a nice cool, misty Scottish morning. I think that is uh gonna be really, really nice. So after that, the classes must continue. And that's the kind of the next part of this episode is the classes continue, and the most important one is Moody, because this is the Imperious class. This is a very, very interesting class. And honestly, the the more I read it and the more I like think about it, the kind of like the more like unsettling it becomes, because of course the the Imperious Curse is one of the most horrifying. I mean, it is it is and it is one of the unforgivable curses. Honestly, that it seems to me like one of the worst. And Moody showed that all too well, and that's kind of what we were discussing in last episode, which again I highly recommend you listen to, with that class. I love how they did it in the film, because in the film they uh showed uh I think actually I forget the order exactly in which they showed them. I think the uh Cruciardo's curse was maybe first. But anyway, how they showed uh the the Imperius Curse was so terrible because it was such like it was fun. That's that's what it was, it was fun. And the kids, you know, in in the class, and even us maybe even watching it for the first time or reading it for the first time, us experiencing the Imperius Curse for the first time, it's just like this funny thing, like this, you know, insects jumping around, like that's that that's that's all we saw. But it was that moment that Moody brought it to that that that pail of water and said, like, what what shall I make her do next? You know, drown herself? It's that that moment of like like oh gosh, like that's that is terrible. Like that is so unbelievably terrible, and that's kind of what what now that taste is kind of left in your mouth, and that's kind of how it's supposed to be because the Imperious Curse is one of the unforgivable curses, it's one of the worst curses around. And it's not like we should be able to, you know, get up and just kind of continue after experiencing it. No, it should be something a little more impactful. So that is the class that we are walking into. And it is a terrible class. I mean, and honestly, I feel like even the book makes light of it. Like, I don't know. I'm looking forward to seeing this. I think I'm living looking forward to seeing this, and it wasn't it it wasn't in the film, and I I just I just don't know. I think the Goblet of Fire missed so many good opportunities, and this was absolutely one of them. Because Voldemort is on the rise, and one of the major themes that one of our goals that we said is, you know, tracking the rise of dark magic, you know, seeing how Voldemort is growing and changing and evolving and how he is slowly stepping back out onto the magical world stage. That is what's going to define our story. Looking back, it is Voldemort who dis who who defines the arc of this entire book. And this Imperious Curse is a great representation of that, especially, you know, once we have our uh hindsight of who you know Moody really is. We see that Harry is face to face with the darkest magic there is all year long. And that's kind of where we are with this with this Imperius Curse, you know, class is that it's not exactly this moment of, you know, education, more as like, um like he's making a point. And that is really kind of horrible. That's kind of that's kind of chilling to think. That first of all, he's using it on students, and second of all, you know, it's like a normal thing. So that's maybe one of the reasons why I think the book could have done this a little bit differently. And you know, we are changing little things about the book, which we we'll get into a major one later. Um, but that's this is this is one of them. I think there should be it should be a very off-putting scene. Like, I'm envisioning something that's like we aren't quite like it's like we know what we're watching, but it's almost like like we're watching it from like a distance. Like, I don't know, I don't know how to describe it, but I know exactly how I should feel while watching it. Because here's the thing I don't want to be feeling like fear. I think that's not quite the right emotion. I don't want to be, you know, laughing at them. Of course, that's not quite it either. I want to kind of have this sense of almost this like like slight but so powerful, like foreboding. Because that's really that's what the scene is about. It's about foreshadowing, it's about telling us that there is something on the horizon and this kind of magic exists outside of a classroom setting. That's a realization that while reading this and while experiencing this scene, I didn't really reflect on for such a long time. But I'm starting to think that's a major takeaway of the scene, and that's telling me that we should, you know, work very hard not to forget that one of the things that you know a dark arts professor would want to, or a DADA professor would want to show the classes, you know, this is what the curse does, and it exists outside of this room. That's the key part of this, you know. The kids are kind of they're they're they're you know, they're trying to resist it and they're trying to, you know, do all these things. And like, sure, like that's you know, that's what they're supposed to be doing. But I feel like even they don't quite make that connection of like, of course they know that you know this room is not the only room where that spell exists, of course they know that. But does it quite sink in? I don't know. I think the the closest they got to it sinking in was that first class they had with Moody when they were talking about all the curses, and I think Ron brought up the Imperius Curse, and Moody was like, oh yes, your father would know, you know, they had a lot of trouble with that. I think that's kind of putting it lightly, you know, they had a lot of trouble with that. Like it's some kind of like disease. It's something else. It is something else, and that is what I really want to drive home with this class. It is a it is a horrific sight. It is just it is just terrible to watch. And that's what I want out of this second class of moody. That's what I want out of watching these kids getting put under the Imperious Curse. I mean, it is just I mean, I I just I I don't even know like how to describe it because we just we just haven't seen it, you know, really working on screen. I think the the closest we got was Pious Thickness in the opening scenes of of of Deathly Hollows when he he's the minister for magic and he of course is under Wildermort's thumb. And I it might be uh like written out in the book that it is the Imperial's Curse, but it clearly is, I mean obviously it is. But I think that's less uh nerve-wracking or less like a little you know shocking than seeing him like actually do something. I'm thinking of like uh when they bring when they break into Gringuts and there's like they're like making these wizards like security wizards and goblins, like do all these things for them. It's just like it is like the most uncomfortable, like icky feeling ever. And that's what I want to build now because when we get to those scenes, when we see Pius thinkings, when we go back back to Gringots and we have to break in and you know, get get the goblin and all, you know, all that, when we have to do all those things, I don't want us to be thinking like, oh, so this is what it looks like. No, I want to kind of it's like we're meeting this cold thing again. Like we wished we we just we hoped against hope the first time we saw that we wouldn't have to experience it again. And yet here we are, realizing that it is just a part of this magical war. That's that's what I want to have later on. So I think now it's important that we set it up. So, anyway, all that to say, this class is gonna be pretty awful. Uh, I am definitely not looking forward well I am so looking forward to seeing this class, and that is to say, I am so dreading watching it. So this this Imperious class with Moody is gonna be very interesting to watch. Especially Harry, because we see him battling it, you know. He's he is, you know, the one who who can resist it. And though he can't, you know, it's not like he can completely do it, but of course, you know, it's his his first time trying. I don't I don't blame him. But Moody is so proud of him. Moody looks at him and uh, you know, is telling him to jump on the desk, but he's trying to stop himself and he's like, he doesn't know what's going on and all that. I think that's that's really cool. I will also say to close out this this uh uh scene, I think one of the major parts of Harry's relationship with the Imperious Curse is the bit of Voldemort in him, you know, hit the fact that he is a Horcrux. And that's of course gonna play a big big role later, but I think to set it up now, even you know, even now I think we can plant those seeds. So I I'm envisioning something like, you know, Harry is when, like, because I what what I love is in the book we have his voice, you know, we we we hear him thinking to himself. I think that is a good way of doing it, but not necessarily a voice. It's you know that sound in the Deathly Hollows film, that like scratching kind of whistle that is the um whorecrux sound, and that's kind of what we get when we see the title. Uh that's that's the kind of sound that I'm envisioning. Not necessarily that sound exactly, but I want to- I want the horcrux sound now. And that it's you know, it's important to mention, maybe even when you have that horcrux sound earlier on, like when he's opening the Tanya's secrets, but he's speaking partial tongue, when he's having these dreams, you know, that are born out of the connection between him and Voldemort. I want to have that sound. And it's funny, I was thinking of um what what really got me thinking about that was the um the Odyssey movie. I don't know if you guys have seen it. First of all, I I loved it. I loved it. And I there's good things and bad things. This is not a review of this, of that, but if if you have seen it, or if if if you have not, there's a scene where Odysseus is in Troy and he's like he he is falling down. Like we we kind of flash back to this like one moment where he kind of like stumbles to the ground, he's like looking up, and we hear this sound. Like we hear that like at the same sound every time, and it kind of puts us back in that in that moment. Um if you if you've seen it, I think I hope you know what I'm talking about. If you've not, uh no worries, it's three hours long. I don't I don't I don't blame you. But that's the kind of you know, that's that's what really inspired me for this. But also, you know, that whore crux sound in the in the last film is really terrible. Like, even to listen to, uh, you know, it really just sends shivers up your spine, you know, just to listen to it. But then the fact that you know it's a whore crux, like oof. Unpleasant stuff, very unpleasant stuff. So anyway, that's what I want to hear. I want to set up that sound now, and then once we get, you know, later on and we really begin to know, uh, I think that would be a really cool thing. So that is our first chunk of episode five, and with that, let's move on.

Next up in episode five, we have a really cool sequence, and this is one that I think if we tweak it just the right way, it can have a really interesting effect on the story. And this is I mentioned that we are gonna be making some changes. Uh, this is absolutely one of those changes. And I think I mentioned I said like there's a there's a big one later on. Uh what I meant by that was, and I think I should mention it now, in the book, uh, the Bobeton and Durmstring are arriving around this time. I think October 30th was the book that uh was the date that they listed in the book uh that they were gonna arrive. So they are you know in the timeline they should be arriving about now, but I am they arrived much earlier uh in the last episode because uh they should, you know, have that dramatic entrance, and I think we should begin the Tri Wars Tournament, you know, uh before this whole the whole year kind of starts. So anyway, that was my reasoning there, and I will say I'm I'm happy with that. But now another one of these changes is the scene where Crumb puts his name in the goblet. And I'm very interested in this scene because this is the only I mean we have other moments uh in in the book. I think like uh one of the uh is it Alicia I think it's Alicia the one one of the um chasers, I think she puts her name in, I think, for Gryffindor. That was in the book. I'm okay with seeing those little moments too, but I think it's very important that we have this moment with Crumb. And there are a few details that I think are definitely important. So here's what I envisioned. I'm just gonna walk through the scene exactly how I see it, and then we can kind of discuss the uh little changes that I made later. And of course, if you uh also take note of of uh what what you hear and what changes you hear. So here's how the scene goes. So the goblet is is is is a lit. It's it's you know, fire is burning, and we see the age line. And I think the age line should not be like the floating thing. I think I like the um chalk, like the idea of like the chalk around. I think a little more literal. Um so I think that's that's that's pretty cool. So I'm I would like that. And then hair on her mind, they're just kind of sitting there, maybe they're eating, I don't know. Maybe they're just hanging out, like and they're just like chilling. And then it's it's like it's not exactly nighttime, but it's like, you know, it's like evening. It's not like the uh the the sun isn't you know bright and shining. It's kind of quiet, you know, there's a buzz of conversation, it's just like any normal day in the Great Hall. But then the doors swing open, and everyone looks over. I mean, it's not like it's not dramatic, like doors open all the time, but they they look over, but their eyes catch because who is it? It is a delegation of derm string students, and in the middle, none other than Victor Crumb. So they're you know, the Saf Karkarov and is it Ivanov with the um the name of like the the assistant to Karkarov, who's also like aiding uh Crumb. They're like fawning over him and trying to like fix his clothes and asking if he's hungry, if he wants wine, if he wants all these things. And crumb's just trying to brush him off. He just he does not want to hear it. Like, this is what he lives with. He just he just does not want to hear it. And they're walking across the hall all this time. There's a bunch of students kind of in a pack behind uh behind Crumb and and uh Karkaroth. So and then Crumb is the first one, he steps across the age line, he you know pushes Karkarov back, and one last time he takes the parchment, he drops it in the goblet, and as he turns, he kind of he he f he sees Hermione's eye, and you know it's not it's not a huge moment, but he kinda sees and maybe he Looks for a little longer than he should, and then he kind of turns away and and and walks out. Then the rest of the students kind of hurry up, which m with much less fanfare, Karkarov turns and follows Crumb. He doesn't even watch his other students put put to put their names in. So the other students put to put their names in, and then they all leave. And then after that, Fred and George run in with age potions. They drink them, jump across the line, try to put their names in, and unfortunately it does not work. They get pushed back with beards, uh, and they uh have a nice little brawl. So that's the scene. The Fred and George part, I think, can say pretty much the same. I like where they kind of run in, like they're like boxing champions, uh yelling. I think that's it's like kind of fun. I like how they do it. And of course, I was thinking profusely about that. Um so Mike Newell, the director of the film, he f very famously broke a rib while teaching the uh uh Phelps twins how to uh do this scene. Uh he wanted to show them like you can really you you know you can really start Ruffhous and you can really like dig dig into each other, and that's what exactly what he did, and he famously broke a rib doing it. So I think it's to pay tribute to Mike Newell, I think it is it is it is okay if they want to uh uh do do that again. So anyway, I am fine with that. But the whole scene with Crumb, there are a few changes I want to make. A big one is they when they first arrived, we had that moment that, like, uh, you know, crumb was getting you know all the attention, Kharko was fawning over him and all that. And he wasn't happy about it for sure, but that happened when they arrived. I'm putting that to now because this is kind of our introducing Kreb for Crumb for real moment. The important part of that is the fact that Crumb is brushing them off. I think if he was accepting all of their, you know, all their praise and all their attention, that would kind of point to his shallow character, and I think he is not a shallow person, so I want to set that up now. Another big one is Karkarov only cares about Krum. So when he puts his name in, he's watching intently, the second he walks away, he follows him out. Doesn't even care about the rest of his students. Karkarov is very shallow and will die a very cowardly death, and I think setting it back that character now is super important. Another big one, this is maybe the most important change that I made in this scene in particular, is that of the interaction between Crumb and Hermione. And in the film, it is terrible. Oh my gosh, I hate that scene. It is so awkward, and it is so like 2000s rom-com, where like um, like, like this like like the hot dude walks up and he puts his name in and he looks to the side and then he's like winks at the girl and like walks out. Like, that's exactly the vibes I was getting. I was just like, oh my gosh, this is terrible. So anyway, I don't think it should be that at all, first of all, because Hermione, I feel like, was not given enough credit in this scene because she was like, she saw him was like, like, oh, and like kind of averted her eyes. Like it was very like, alright, like come on. I feel like, you know, I I want this to feel real. And I don't that that just doesn't ha like that just didn't happen, you know, in the real world. So what I would rather have happen is Crum kind of be the one to kind of do like the double take. Because Hermione, you know, whatever Hermione's thinking, whether you know she she's attracted to him or not, I she shouldn't be like fixing your hair, and then she like he looks at her and she's like uncomfortable, like, I don't know. Hermione has she is such a strong character. I feel like it's such a shame to kind of you know put her in that box of like she's you know nervous at the gaze of like another like another person. Like, I don't know. That's that's that's not how I see her. But I think Crum, I think he I think he he's very pure of heart, and that's why he's chosen, first of all. And that's also why he is such a good friend to Hermione, you know, as the years go on, and why I'm I'm thinking of the wedding, of Bill and Fleur's wedding, how he and Harry talk. He's such like he is a genuine person. He's such a genuine person, and that comes from his life of fame. Because I think this is kind of this is this little capsule is crumb in in a nutshell, and I want this to be his capsule that we know him by. He walks in, he is this famous guy, but he clearly doesn't want he's pushing them away. They're they're they're all over him, but no, he doesn't want it. I think that shows his his humility. He puts his name in the goblet, which shows that he is brave, you know, he he wants to, he's proud of his school, he wants to represent his school well. He's clearly a strong competitor, of course, that's for sure. We know that all too well. And then as he like he looks past Hermione, I think, you know, he he is very respectful. You know, he doesn't run up to her and he doesn't, you know, make make a fool of himself, so he's clearly a gentleman, but at the same time, you know, it's not like he we we see him. He's not afraid to show that he actually has, you know, a uh he has emotion, he feels something, he he is a person. And I think that should that shows his his his heart that it is truly a he's pure heart, that we're we're we are seeing him for who he truly is. I think I think that is a wonderful way of of introducing Crum. And should should Hermione take notice, and maybe she, you know, she isn't too disappointed that that that he looked twice at her. I think may sure. I mean, that's you know, a relationship that's gonna continue for sure. So I'm definitely not not mad at that, but I'd so much rather have Crumb kind of be the focus, and then he kind of like like the that that seed, like the the like the idea of of her of Hermione and the kind of a relationship between them is kind of planted then. It's just it is so dramatic and it is way too overdone in the film. Uh it is just that's it's just not it. Like that's just what it is. It's just it's just not it. But the whole Fred and George thing, honestly, it's they couldn't mess it up. It's just really funny. So that I am okay with. So anyway, I this was actually one of the things that I'm looking forward to the most because that's like it's those little changes that I think it plays like it's not what happened in the book, but it is so much more close to what happened in the book. Like, you know what I'm doing what I'm trying to say? Like, we are we are we as we have been seeing experiencing and living in these stories for so many years, these characters are changing. And if we watch the same scene over and over again, it's not gonna change, you know? So we have these out these kinds of opportunities, these little moments that we can give our characters just a little bit of credit, just a little bit of that of that stock that has been growing, you know, growing in these in in this story for the 20 years that we've been reading these books, you know? They deserve that. And I think that's really what I'm trying to get at here, you know. These little changes are what make these characters pop. Suddenly, we care about Crumb. We didn't care about him at all when he when he arrived, when he was playing in the Quidditch World Cup. Honestly, like we saw him and we saw that he cared about, you know, competing, he's a great Quidditch player. We don't care. Like, I mean, of course, like if if you're a diehard sportsman, of course you care about you know that, but like as readers, as Harry, never heard of him, we've never heard of him, we don't care about him. This scene comes, suddenly we care about Crum. And we spent some time with Cedric, Cedric helped Harry up, bam, snap of a finger, suddenly Cedric means something to Harry, and he means something to us. That's what we're setting up. Because now we're heading to the evening, and this is where we care about these characters, we understand them, and now we really have a chance to make a make something happen. We have a chance to really make this story come to life. And I think Fleur uh her moment doesn't come as naturally, and it's it's too bad because I think we we get to know her, you know, as the champions kind of go through their their you know ways or whatever. But I think the second task is really when we get to to truly know her, and that's just like that's just how the story goes. And I'm not I'm not willing to break the story so much that we meet her earlier. I think that that doesn't quite work. But all the same, we care about our champions, and now it's time well, I say champions, we care about our students from different schools, uh, but now it's time to make them champions. So Crumb puts his name in, uh, they and we go about the rest of our day. Then comes the evening, and this is the evening where the names are going to be chosen out of the goblet, and it is this this is tense. The uh dinner is is definitely tense. The sky is, you know, the sky is cloudy. And the time comes. The time comes. The goblet uh, you know, is clearly stirring, like maybe they're hearing noises or like something something's happening, like they're they're like definitely hearing something. And then kind of quiet falls, Dumbledore stands from the staff table. Kharkarov, Madame Maxine, they're all watching from the wings, everyone, everyone is it is it is a silent hall. They're all watching so intently. And of course, I mean I'm sure Dumbledore should say something dramatic, or maybe he doesn't. You know what? Maybe, honestly, that would be really cool if he just got up. Like, so okay, this is exactly what's gonna happen. Chatter, chatter, chatter, everyone's talking. Dumbledore doesn't tink his glass, doesn't do anything. He stands up, and we hear his chair kind of rock back, and then the all all the students kind of l turn and look. And this kind of dawn of realization slowly creeps through the hall. And suddenly the goblet, you know, it doesn't actually get brighter, but suddenly it seems just a little bit brighter, just a little bit hotter, just a little bit more intimidating. And Dumbledore makes his way down through the rows to the very center of the hall where the goblet is placed. And I I I do like the scene where he kind of reaches out his hand, shaking a little bit, he puts it on the side of the goblet, and it's it's almost like he's like communicating with it, like he's he's telling it that it's that it's finally time. And you know, he he he puts his hand on the side, and then the you know, I think the the flame is blue, in an instant it turns red. He steps back, and it is it is such a cool I mean I I do like how they did it in the film of like it, you know, the um you know shoots of fire are coming out, so like it's uh almost like a firework. It shoots out right into into into Dumbledore's hand, and he reads out, you know, the the the the candidate from Beaubaton, Fleur Delacour. And if she is chosen, she smiles, she uh I mean this is I think kind of a break of the tension. You know, like you go to a concert and everyone claps. Like that's that's kind of like the the the release of tension. That's kind of what's what's going on. So Fleur, I want to see her like a genuine smile. She is so proud to be to have have been chosen. Everyone, her, her, her entire school is clapping. Madame Maxim, I think, you know, in true uh gentlewomanly fashion, you know, she's she's she is definitely, you know, giving giving some some some applause, but not uh not not really. She's you know being very like, yes, good job, good job. Uh so that's that's that's really funny. And she makes her way to the back room. And next up is Crum. So the goblet bursts another jet of flame and a piece of paper uh shoots into Dumbledore's hand. He says, the champion from Durm Strang, Victor Crumb. No surprise there. I mean, of course, we knew exactly what was what was gonna happen. So everyone, like, I think it should be almost comical. They're like, like, they kind of sound like a bunch of gorillas, you know, like you know, which they they kind of do um anyway. But this is also a good moment of character building because we see, you know, we we care about him now, and we see him, and he is clearly he is so proud. That should be kind of the the the emotion. He's so proud. He looks out over his friends. I think he should like clap some someone on the back, like one one of the students, like one of one, maybe one of his close friends. And then Karkarov is trying to do something, like trying to shake his hand, trying to say, good job, trying to walk him up, but crumb pushes him off, shakes hand with Dumbledore, and goes to the two to the back room. And now his silence truly falls, because this is very intense. And the goblet you know shoots forth one last jet of flame, and we have our final champion in hand. Dumbledore opens the scroll and says, Our champion from Hogwarts, Cedric Diggory, and of course the castle explodes. Hogwarts is so proud. Um, and I I really like this moment. I think it's kind of a classic Hogwarts moment. Slytherin could not care less. They're just all sitting there. But I think it should show something that Gryffindor and Ravenclaw are also, you know, pro they are they are profuse in their celebration because it's that's that's that's their champion now. It's almost like um like it's like a sports team, you know? It's like you're you're just cheering for for for for your guy. That that's like that's that's that's the Hogwarts guy, you know. So they're so happy to cheer for him. Cedric gets up, he's he's he's beaming, he's so happy to have been chosen. Um and he goes up, he shakes hand, Dumbledore gives him a nice big hug. Of course, he is uh the the headmaster, and Cedric is uh brought back to the back room. So it's kind of this this huge celebration, and Harry is, I mean, really enjoying it. I think it's like really cool, you know, that they're kind of watching this this really cool thing unfold. So, what a time, what a time, really. I mean, and now Dumbledore turns says, right, now our champions have been chosen, and he is, you know, giving this wonderful speech. And I love the moment in the film where kind of the goblet starts to misbehave a little bit because I I really like how it's Snape who sees it first. You know, Snape kind of it's like he's like like the goblet's like stirring. It's not it's not like it was last time, but it's still s like something is clearly happening, and it's not supposed to be. Like that's what's going on. Snape kind of looks at it and he's he's kind of dumbfounded, like, what is going on? And this is ex- I I see it's like it's just a second, just a second of a shot, but I'm now also envisioning, and here okay, I'm there there are three things that I'm envisioning. Right after we see Snape, we see Moody. That's that's what I know for sure. But here, there there are three options. The first one that I'm not as confident about, but I think could be kind of cool, is we suddenly we see Snape and then we get a shot of the reflection of the goblet in like a piece of glass. And we're not quite sure like what the piece of glass is. It's clearly kind of a warped um image of the of the goblet, so it's like a small piece of glass, and we kind of realize it's Moody's eye. It's Moody's eye that we're seeing the goblet, and then we then we did that we cut away. That's option one. I'm not sure what that because it's kind of that's kind of strange. Option two is we see Snape, and then we see kind of like how when when Moody walked in, like we kind of follow him from the back. That's kind of what I'm envisioning also here. So we see Snape looking at the goblet, and then for a second we cut away, we see Moody kind of standing in the corner very darkly, not moving, not reacting, the shadow of the flames are kind of dancing across his across his face. We don't we don't see his his his expression though. We only see him hunched over statue, washing. That's option two. And option three is maybe the one that I'm most partial to. Is kind of a combination of of of the first two. So the goblet starts spitting, Snape kind of walks towards it and looks at it, and then we we cut away, we see Moody, we see his face. It's a close-up on his face, we see the reflection of the goblet in his eye, and we see kind of a light, you know, kind of dancing across his face, which is totally impassive. He has no reaction, he is not thinking, you know, he's not like shocked, he's not trying to fix it. No, no, no. He is he is stone cold. And then we're back to Snape. That's kind of what I'm leaning towards. And now that I'm kind of uh, you know, talking about, I think that one is definitely definitely the right one. I mean, if you disagree, write in and let me know, because this is a great, you know, opportunity to kind of show his true colors for once. Uh so that's that's that's that's pretty cool. But anyway, uh we see Moody, we're back to Snape, and I think, you know, we don't have to spend too long on Snape because that's definitely a movieism, and it's just kind of paying homage to to that moment in the in the film. But we're back to the students, and they're kind of unsure. I feel like they wouldn't be as unsure if Dumbledore hadn't stopped and kind of turned around and was looking at the goblet like he was seeing something for the very first time, because he was. He is watching this thing happen. And uh it's like in this moment of shock, the student's aghast as another piece of paper shoots from the goblet and Dumbledore catches it. He is he can't quite quite he can't bel he's looking at this thing in his hand, he can't quite believe he can't quite believe it. And the student like this is now true silence. It's not this excited kind of you know fun-filled silence. No. This is uh this is a tense, this is a tense moment, because this is a very powerful magical artifact. And now that it is doing something that they don't expect it to do, I can't imagine they're feeling very safe right now. Dumbledore looks at a piece of paper in his hand, and we should see I'm Jonathan Lithgow has quite the role uh to kind of it's it this it's a very malleable, malleable role, but this is a moment that I think can he can really show just how versatile of a character Dumbledore is. Because he should be I mean, I will say I do like how they did it. I I like bits and pieces of how they did it in the in the in the film. So if Dumbledore sees it, I think Michael Gammon is definitely the right actor for this for this moment. He looks at it and he's very quietly, I just like in the film, he says, Harry Potter. And it's like w the no one no one hears him, you know, he's in he didn't shout it. He looks around and he kind of looks right at Harry and he screams, you know, Harry Potter! Like, like in all the memes. Uh and Harry like shocked. Like the guy the the hall is still, like statues. Harry cannot move. It's like he's I can like I want to watch him and almost feel like what he's feeling. His fingers are like his fingers are numb and he can't like he can't quite breathe right. Like something he's like, he's just like what is happening? And then Hermione grabs him. Like, I think this is a good moment to show kind of Hermione. You know, she's she's very practical. She grabs him, shoves him up, shoves him forward. He can't like it's like he can't walk like right. Like, it's like he's like he's on a different planet. And Ron is like shocked and like angry at the same time. Like, we like the whole hall is just like, what is happening? Harry walks up to Dumbledore, who is looking very serious right into Harry's eyes. He doesn't shake his hand, he doesn't clap him on the back. He hands him his piece of paper. He didn't do that for anyone else. He hands him his piece, Harry looks down and he sees Harry Potter written. And he walks back back through the staff table. Yeah. I will say I like Hagrid, uh, who's like, no, no, no. Like, it is it is really funny. I don't think maybe we shouldn't have that right now, because it is a very tense moment. But we see Hagrid kind of looking at him McGonagall. Like all of his professors who are kind of shocked, Harry makes his way back and goes down to this down down to the room, and he's chosen. And just like that, all of the Hogwarts champions are chosen. Strange. Strange times. Well, that is the end of episode five. I mean, we must now begin episode six. So let's move on.

Episode six begins with Harry walking down to the champion’s room

I think there is no other way to open up episode six than with Harry walking down the stairs. He's walking down, and it's like quiet. Like, I'm I'm here's what what what I'm envisioning. It's a black screen, and we kind of see like the text of like, you know, Harry Potter, whatever, episode this, directed by that, music by that, like whatever it is, and we hear footsteps, and they're kind of halting, they're not quite sure what's going on. And then the camera opens up on Harry walking down the stairs. And here's here's here's what I'm envisioning. This is a big staircase, it's wide, it's long, uh, and the camera is still at the bottom, and we see the whole thing. And then we just kind of see like the little the speck of Harry making his way down, and he gets closer and closer and closer, kind of walking down the stairs in this kind of unbroken shot. And I want to show the size of the staircase compared to him, and realize just how small he really is. And he makes his way into the room with all the other uh the other champions, and this I like how uh this is a great moment in the book where Harry kind of registers just how tall they are, it's how intimidating they are. They're old, you know, they they know what's going on. They see him, they see Harry, and they say, Oh, is there is there a message? Like, but they're clearly not like a little confused because like why would they send Harry like to tell them something? Like, I don't know. It's like it's definitely strange. Um, but Harry's like, like, no, I don't have a message. And that's when we hear the kind of the storm behind him. So we are at last upon the uh did you put your name in the fire? Like that that that whole uh scene. But I'm gonna give do a do a little mashup here. So Harry uh rushes, like so first of all, we hear the door bang open and we see we hear footsteps rushing down the stairs. Harry's like little he's on edge, first of all, and he kind of rushes to the side, puts put puts his puts his head down, and it's Madame Maxime, it's Snape, it's you know Karkaroff and Ludo Bagma, Bardicrouch, uh, Moody and Dumbledore, they are rushing down the stairs. And here's the thing Madamaxine is livid. Karkaroff is livid, and I think this is very important that Moody and Karkroff are at each other's throats. That's a very important part of the scene, because I want to show their contention early on. Karkov saying, like, this is not allowed, and Moody's like, oh well, you s like that's that's that's exactly what you would say. And of course, Meta Maxine is also like, so what we can't we can't give Hogwarts two bites at the apple. Uh she's she's she's getting mad too. But Dumbledore's calm. Dumbledore's calm. I think the um the line in the book, Dumbledore asks calmly, is the most important part. Because I think Dumbledore's kind of wade through and they're kind of watching him, wondering what he's gonna do. He goes to Harry and says, Harry. Did you put your name in the goblet of fire? Very, very calm, very controlled, very slow. And Harry says no. And Harry Dumbledore asks, Did you ask an older student to do it for you? And Harry says, No. Dumbledore clearly believes him. So they have their whole conversation, and it is eventually decided that Harry must compete. Harry must compete. I mean, scary. Really scary stuff. So Harry's say this. Harry's fate is sealed. And the rest of the champions are just as confused. And I want to see duh Fleur maybe a little like, but that's not like that how how is that allowed? Like Fleur's a little angry at the competition aspect. Chrome is just kind of confused. Like, well, I thought, like, I think like, because he is, he, you know, he admires the spirit of competition and he wants there have a fair, you know, a fair competition here, and he worries, you know, that this is gonna make it kind of, you know, different than what he signed up for. Cedric, I think, is the one who is the most concerned. Because I think Cedric maybe his father might have told him, you know, warned him about something to do with the Travis Tournament. So Cedric knows what's in store, and he's kind of looking at Harry with this realization that he's in for something that he does not know or did not sign up for. Because I think it's important that Cedric believes him. Cedric is a stand-up guy, you know, he's he's genuinely a good person. I think that should come through in this moment. So we move on from here, and Harry is the official fourth champion of the Tri-Wizard tournament. We have so okay, so I mean, I'll just fly by there. There are a few important things here. We have a potions class, they're all lining up, and then uh I think it's Colin Creevy who comes to grab Harry for the Wang of the Wands, and then uh Malfoy is kind of getting getting mad at him, and then they uh, you know, exchange curses. One of them hits Hermione, and her teeth start to grow, and this horrible thing, Snape says, I I I see no difference. What a terrible thing for him to say. Hermione rushes up to the hospital wing, and Harry goes off to the weighing of the wands, where we have our our our main man, Olivander, he's back on the case. DJ Ollie, he's back. He does the wang, he produces wine and flowers and doves, and he tells them each about their wands. Uh oh, what is Cedric's? Gosh. I think Cedric is maybe unicorn hair, something like that. Uh Victor's is Dragon Heartstring, and Fleur's is, of course, a Vila hair. And Hare's is a Phoenix feather. So it's a uh very interesting uh part of that. So we have the Wang of the Wands, fantastic. And then right afterward, they uh take their photos, and then Rita Skeeter pulls Harry aside for the interview. Of course, very dramatic. This is kind of our first um, you know, really up close and personal interactions with her. Of course, she was writing in the uh Prisoner of Askaman as well. But this is, you know, she's kind of back and she's, you know, uh, you know, writing, writing with us. Oh no, was she in the prisoner of Askaman? I don't think so. I think I'm misremembering the end of this book as the end of the Prisoner of Ascomen. No, I think this is when we were we're meeting her. So we're we're we're sorry. I I apologize. We are meeting her now. She pulls Harry's side for the interview, it's the very dramatic, you know. Um, and then Harry is wiping away tears, he is in love with Hermione, um, he is this young child who lost his parents, and Victor Crumb is a sports champion. Cesar Diggree is the most handsome gentleman around, and Harry cries uh every day at night. So it's a very dramatic, kind of a terrible, terrible version of the story. Uh and Harry read he has has that later. And that night he gets a message from Sirius that he should be in the common room at 1 p.m. at 1 a.m. on uh what is it November 20th? I think that's that's what it is. Sorry, November 22nd, which is two days before the first task. So let's let's let's go there now. It is, but okay, first of all, he gets that message, be in the comroon 1 a.m. on uh November 22nd. On November 22nd, he goes into Hogsmead and he wears his invisibility cloak just to gain some anonymity. And he ran he runs into Hagrid, who doesn't see him, but Mad Eye Moody's with him, and of course Moody can see him, and Hagrid then uh knows that he's there, and Hagrid tells Harry to come to his hut at midnight. So Harry has two appointments in the middle of the night now. So at night, Harry goes to Hagrid's hut, and Hagrid, of course, brings him through the forest to see the dragons. And I like how this is in the film. I like um the dragon tamers kind of running around. Because we see how intense, you know, even in cages, these things are really dangerous. And of course, Madame Maxime is there. Uh Harry sees the dragons, and the reason I'm not really going too far into this is I like it in the film, I like it in the book. There's really no reason to change it. Maxime is there, and then Harry has to rush back because he has his appointment with Sirius. And uh this was originally made to discuss his scar, but also now Harry's gonna tell him about the first task, so he would they they rush back, he runs into Karkarov on the way, going through the forest, so now Harry knows that every single uh champion except for Cedric knows about the dragon. So that's gonna that's an important note that he's gonna have later. He goes up to the common room and it is it is 1 p.m. and Sirius appears in the fire. And honestly, I'm not sure how how this is gonna happen because I was I was kind of reflecting on that. I don't really like how it's done in in the film because it's like his face is made out of the logs. That's a little weird, and I definitely don't like how it's described in the book of like it's a literal head, like it's a human head. I don't really like that. I think the best one is The Order of the Phoenix, where it's like in the flames, there is a like like the light kind of becomes him. Like that's kind of what I what I like. So I like that one if you can uh remember that from the fifth film. But anyway, they're talking to Sirius, and this this is the important things. This is what uh Sirius tells Harry. Don't trust Kakarov. He was a dark wizard, once a dark wizard, always a dark wizard. He was and then he uh tells him about Moody, one of the most powerful aurores in history, and that whole fiasco with the dustbins over the summer might not have been an accident. People are actually after him. Watch your back, Harry. These are trained dark wizards. And then he also should talk about uh the the other uh competitors. I think this is where we begin to see them as competitors, and I think this is where kind of Harry's beginning to kind of panic a little bit because uh, you know, Sirius is saying, like Crum, you know, he's under Karkaroth's tutelage, trained in dark wizard, you know, trained in dark wizardry. Watch out. Fleur uh, you know, is is is also uh as much a fairy princess as I am, uh, which is which is really funny. Uh that's that's that's what Moody says later, and that's that's the sentiment that uh Sirius is trying to impart. So he's saying, This is intense, and then Harry says, dragons, that's the first task, dragons, I'm not ready, Sirius, I'm not ready. And Sirius says, Oh, well, all you have to, and then they hear footsteps, and then Sirius says, good luck, and he's gone. And it's Ron. And this is kind of you know, this is kind of the first one with their face to face afterwards, and there's clearly some tension, like, you know, Ron's like, Oh, you're just prepping for your next interview, I expect. And Harry's like, taking it back, he's like, No, I I I I was not. And then Ron like brushes him off and goes back up. And this is kind of the beginning of their like kind of tension-filled relationship. We might have other moments uh in between, but this is kind of their first like confrontation, I guess you could say. So Harry's mind is spinning, he wakes up the next day, and this is what has to happen. He goes to Cedric and he tells Cedric, dragons, that's the first task. Cedric is shocked. Like, why is Harry telling him this? Well, it's because Harry wants them to be on even footing. He knows that Karkarov knows, and naturally so Crumb knows, and Madame Maxime saw, so naturally Florida knows as well. If Harry also knows, he I think I I would do the same thing, you know, not to toot my own horn, but it definitely seems like the right thing to do. He tells Cedric it's dragons, good luck. And that's when Moody finds him and brings him into his office. And this is our beginning of the red flags. Of course, if we didn't have enough red flags about Moody in the beginning, this is another one. He is trying to tell Harry how to beat the dragons. Uh, and he tells him to use Quidditch. So he says, summon your broom, Harry. Well, of course, they you know leads him down the path of of discovery. Uh, and Harry, so Harry knows, alright, so I have to summon my broom, and that's what he practices with Hermione. He summons uh he practices the summoning charm Akyo, which will uh be a uh an important part if if if small, important in the upcoming uh uh moments. And there we go. Just like that, we are uh we are prepped for the first task. So this is this is gonna be cool. So the reason why I'm not I didn't save so much time at the end of the episode for the first task is because I like it. Honestly, I like it. But not how it's done in the film, or kind of kind of not how it's done in the book. The one ch the one thing I don't like is how it's like a montage. Like we're we hear the music playing and it's so intense, and you know, everything's happening, and gosh, you know, these these competitors, and we hear uh Dumbledore's voice booming, uh he got it, you know, we hear the cheers, we hear the booze, we hear the uh, we hear the ahs, and then it's Harry up to the plate. You know, he's ready to go. Like, that's a little too dramatic for my liking. And it's kind of like what we had with Crumb and Hermione that moment, and that's one of our goals is personal moments, you know, intensely personal moments. These moments where we feel like there's nothing else in the world but us and Harry, that we feel what he's feeling. We we are, you know, we are living this with him. We are in that tent pacing with him, and a montage is just not gonna get there. So here's what I think we should have. We should we should witness the other uh uh tasks. Not in their entirety, like that would take a long time, because of course Harry's took forever, like, you know, we shouldn't go through, like we shouldn't spend 10 minutes just listening to everyone else. I think what what what we should do is they draw their dragons, and then we kind of we cut to them all leaving, and then maybe we we listen to Cedric, like Cedric goes last, uh, and then we we like listen to the whole thing, and like Harry is petrified hearing the crowd, hearing the roars, these huge dragons. I mean, it is really terrifying to hear. And then we are with him every step of the way. Luda Bagman comes back in and grabs him and says, Alright, it's your time. Oh my gosh. The fear in Harry's heart in that moment. I mean, seriously, there is a dragon waiting for him in that arena. That's that's what he's thinking. There is a dragon who is ready to kill me in that arena right there. I mean, really, just terrifying. So he goes to the first task. I do like how they do it with the dragon wasn't there, and then she kind of crashes down. That's that's that's that's really cool. And he goes to the task. And I think this this episode should end triumphantly. So he goes through, he has his whole quidditch chase, he rums out victorious. I think uh I like the music here too, so anyway, it's very triumphant, and I do want that kind of triumphant end. He hoists the golden egg, you know, and just like that, the first task is done. And just like that, our episode is done. What a fun time. I must say, what a fun time. The first task is done. We have a few more tasks to go, and this was really cool. I liked those little changes in service of our goals. We really know more about our characters now. The Imperious Curse, Crumb, Hermione, the Twins, Ron, Moody, Dumbledore, Snape, and Harry, I think are all these characters who I think we really got another interesting and imperative taste of in this episode.
