SEASON FINALE!!! The 3rd Task and Voldemort's Return | Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Tea Leaves S4 E9+10)

We have finally reached the end of this season. We are going to be discussing episodes 9 and 10, the season finale. Lots gonna go down today. We have a very dense episode. Uh I don't know how long it's gonna be, honestly. So we're just gonna see how how we're gonna get through this. Thank you all so much for joining me today. Aftermath of the Second Task

So our last episode ended with the second task. That is where we are coming from. It was a really crushing experience for Harry. He was alone under the lake, he was trying to save his his his prize, what he had lost, um, and by the skin of his teeth, he managed to do it. So it was it was an action-packed episode, and I want to begin episode nine with the aftermath of the second task. So we see Harry and Ron, you know, sitting at the duh the the in in the Great Hall talking about how it all happened and how everything went down, and I I do like uh the detail in the book of how Ron, every time Ron tells the story, like people ask himself like what happened down there, he just like makes it a little bit more grand, like he he he eggs it up a little bit more every time. So I like that detail a lot. I think Ron is definitely the comedic relief for this for the beginning part of the episode. So I could totally imagine watching like a montage kind of thing where we see him talking to one group and he says one story, and then he kind of realizes that this is in the good opportunity because no one was there, you know, no one no one can corroborate or or discount his story, so he just kind of makes it bigger and bigger and bigger, and it's I mean, it's he makes it very impressive. So he ends, you know, he was fighting and barely got out alive, and it was so dramatic and all that, and I think that's uh a really funny detail. But the important part of this uh this beginning part of episode nine is the fact that Harry does not share in the joy, and this is an interesting uh kind of facet of the second task. So, like we were talking about last episode, the first task was crazy. It was Harry facing a dragon, his first time as a champion representing Hogwarts, and it was understandably very scary. I am not blaming him at all for being scared. But after he defeated his dragon, after he got his egg and it was all triumphant, everyone was like, oh my gosh, look at it, it'd be so cool. He went up back to the common room and he was a hero, and he was celebrating, and he was also cheering with his house. But that is very much not the case now. I think the rest of his house is definitely celebrating, but we don't spend too much time talking about that because we already saw it for the first task. We know that Hogwarts is behind him, and we know that he and Cedric, you know, although they are competitors, they are still engaging in the spirit of competition. Like two sports teams who can still enjoy the game. You know, they are they are competing, but they are still enjoying the game. That is what Harry and Cedric are doing, and that's a really nice thing. But especially after the second task, and this is a a clear contrast to the first, Harry is is feeling it. I mean, it is. I I was immediately thinking of you know, like movies about like war veterans or people who have gone through something like very uh traumatic, and like little sounds remind them, like it's it's a little overdramatized, but I remember seeing I think I was watching a show, I can't remember what it was, but it was I think oh, it was um Jack Ryan with John Krasinski. Uh good show, you know, it was very uh very much not this. But anyway, the point is you don't have to have seen that, but there's a scene where the main character was lying in bed and uh looking up at his fan, and his fan on the ceiling was going round and round and he's listening, and all I was reminding him of was like like helicopter blades of like being in a war zone. And it's kind of a strange thing, but that's kind of the vibe that I want for this sequence with Harry. And it's kind of a strange thing to think that, but that's kind of what what I'm thinking. Like Harry feels like he's still there, and I think the reason is I'm not I'm definitely not comparing this to being at war, you know. It's definitely a very different feeling, but I think why Harry is still there and why it's kind of you know, kind of nagging him still, is that feeling of crushing isolation is still with him. Like he can't, as as viewers, we're kind of alongside Harry before the second task. And before he goes, you know, down there, before he he dies in the lake and actually begins the task, he's a champion, he's surrounded by students, uh, he is you know Hogwarts champion, he is scared, he's been but but but but he's been doing research and he has you know the thing. Like that's kind of the feel that that we have going into this. But the second he jumps in, it's kind of it's kind of like his world just kind of collapses. And in a second, all he has is his heart, his breath, and his and his, you know, the empty expanse, that that that impossibly big canyon. He can't even see the bottom filled with water, filled with darkness. That's what he that's what he what he's living in. And we were we were talking about that last episode. Uh, what's that like fear of the ocean? That that's like kind of the the uh the vibe with with this because anything could happen. I mean, could you could you like I even after I finished recording last week's episode, I just I kept going back to the idea of like, oh my gosh. Like I personally don't think I have that phobia, but man, could you imagine being down there? Could you imagine like being down at the very bottom of the lake, you don't know what's going on, and you feel like a bite or grab or like some orbit, like like you see something flit ahead of you, like oh my gosh, that is just terrifying. So you could imagine that as you know, as a champion, Harry actually living this whole situation. After he encounters something like that, after he goes through that kind of experience, you can imagine he's not gonna forget it in a hurry. No, no, no, he is not going to forget that terrible, terrible, crushing feeling. But most importantly, it's not just you know representative of the lake itself. He's not just thinking about that, but it's pointing to a larger issue, and we are slowly drifting towards that larger issue, and that is his fight against Voldemort. Don't don't forget, one of our big goals for this season was draw Harry closer to the outside world. That lake was a representation of the outside world, and Harry is feeling that draw. I'm not going to assume that he understands it perfectly, because he's just 14, he does, he doesn't really, he hasn't been thrown in the deep end yet. I think around Half-Blood Prince, and especially if I mean obviously Deathly Hollows, he will really begin to feel that pull. But right now, now that it's kind of just starting, we we feel it as readers, and I think we don't quite know why. And that's the important part. We don't quite understand, you know, we are fe we feel like Harry is kind of becoming something other than a Hogwarts student, and we can't quite put our finger on it. That's kind of the feeling I want here. And that lake, and and and this, this, this aftermath of Harry, just he can't shake it. He can't shake that feeling. And I I could totally imagine seeing him, you know, seeing him sitting next to Ron, like so after like the whole montage of him telling of Ron telling the story, and it gets bigger and bigger and bigger, you know, we have another, you know, someone else asks him and Ron starts talking, but we just look at Harry and see Harry watching, and he's like, he's listening to the words, but all he can think about is that lake, and we see like flashes, like we flash away and we see the lake, flash away, see like a merr person, flash away, see like the ruins, like things like that. Like Harry is Harry is consumed by this, and we just don't know why. We just don't know like what it is. What is it about that whole experience that was so fascinating and so horrifying at the same time? And it is though, even as even as viewers, we might not realize it, but it is that idea that Harry is not a student, you know, anymore. He is he is getting pulled out of Hogwarts slowly and getting pulled into the clutches of war. So this whole opening sequence serves to show us that, to show us that Harry is definitely changing. He is not uh this second task is I think a much more outward-facing marker of that, but the whole Tri Wizard tournament as a whole is Harry getting moved away from this, you know, his role as just a student. Yes, he of course is still taking classes and he's still engaging in Hogwarts Life. I'm not saying he's not, but there is definitely something to be said there that he is, for sure, getting pulled to the outside world. So that is how this episode begins. Uh, but let's move on.

Rita Skeeter and Karkaroff are stirring the pot

Now I got a few things. The first one is Rita Skeeter, she's back. Did you miss her? I certainly did. I was I was enjoying my life free of drama. Well, Rita Skeeter just can't resist stirring the pot, and we have more Rita Skeeter uh things to discuss. So, the first one is, of course, Hermione. I think that is that is kind of the big one. Uh that that it is Hermione who is being targeted now, and that is because unfortunately, she is very good friends with Harry, and she is uh getting involved with Victor Crumb. And of course, Rita Skeeter wouldn't ever miss an opportunity like this. So she is not going to pass it up. Uh Rita Skeeter is writing a a scathing article of Hermione talking about how she is torn between two two lovers, you know, she is playing with the hearts of two champions, and it is such a dramatic situation. And of course, Hermione is aghast, and naturally, you know, Rita Skeeter f has a a pretty wild uh pen, but still people believe, you know, some of it, including Mrs. Weasley, as we will discuss. So it is a it is a very startling uh turn of events for sure. And I think Hermione is just like taken aback. Like she is just like this is just ridiculous. She feels defamed, and of course, rightly so, because she was. And uh Harry is, you know, also, you know, it's it's it's it's tough for him too, because he knows that that's not the case, and he feels bad for her, and he doesn't want his name, you know, getting tarnished like that either. So it's just a rotten situation. And Rita is just the worst. Everyone doesn't like her, and that's just kind of the truth. Everyone knows. So it is a it is a tough, tough situation for for everyone all around. But there are, I'm sorry to say Harry Miney, there are more important things to get to here. So the next thing I want to talk about is potions class. So uh this is a very interesting potions class. So the trio, everyone files down, everyone sits down. It's a you know, it seems like a normal class, but Harry Modern Mining, all they want to do is talk. They're just sitting at the back of the class around their calls, and they're just chatting, chatting, chatting, talking about everything, the tasks, talking about who is who, and the article and Harry's woes about someone being inside the castle who's who's out to get him, and Snape is having none of it, so Snape separates them all. He brings Harry right up front so he can keep an eye on him. It's a very uh awkward uh situation. But now we have an interesting development here, and in the book, what happens is Harry pretends to spill, it's like an armadillo extraction, something something like that. Harry pretends to spill something and is cleaning it up because Karkarov walks in and wants to speak to Snape, and Harry wants to hear it. But here's the thing: I don't like that in the book of how he spills something and pretends to clean it up. That's just like, first of all, really transparent. I mean, Snape would see through that in an instant. And also, like, I feel like he should be more like Karkarov should come in during class and want to talk to Snape during class because that should be an indicator of how urgent this is. And of course, Karkov is talking about the stirrings of the dark mark. And this is we we discussed how Harry would begin to grow more suspicious of Karkaroff and how he would find moments and see little things and catch things that would kind of indicate that Karkov might not be a very stand-up guy. This is one of those things. So Karkaroff walks in the room and during class and Snape beckons him over, and Skarkarov starts talking, and of course, Snape realizes what he wants to talk about, and he's trying to shut him down, trying to tell him no later, later, later. But no, Karcroft has to speak to him. Harry is, of course, very interested. His potion is forgotten. He's watching, and he sees. I think it is important that he sees the Dark Mark. I think this is a moment where the film does it in a very clumsy way. I really hate it, honestly. Um, and it is when like Harry's walking by the potion's store cupboard, and it says Snape and Karkov are in there, and Karkarov like holds his arm out for Harry to see and basically just pulls up his sleeve, and like you be like, it's just like, come on. It is just such a uh uh clumsy way of doing it. I mean, and I get it, like you can't weave it in any any other way, but this is this is I think a better way of doing it. So Harry's sitting in front of the class, and King Karov, uh Snape and Karkov are talking very hushed voices, very you know, but it's very animated. They're clearly discussing something very important. And Karkarov, you know, like finally, like something snaps, he's male mad at Snape, and he gets his sleeve and he rolls it up, and he's of course he's he's trying to hide it. Like, this is where it would be kind of fixing that plot hole. He just like happens to be showing it to Snape the moment Harry walks by. No. He knows what he's doing, and he is trying to hide it, because he knows what a mark like that would do. But Harry is in the front row. Snape put him in the front row, so Harry looks over and maybe he sees a glimpse, maybe he sees just a flash. Nothing like I I I don't want to see. I don't want Harry to see it and know what it is. But we should kind of maybe see just like the edge or something that's like, oh, like that's something's there. Like something is clearly there. Because we're gonna get a much better look uh at it later in the graveyard. So Harry, Harry sees that, and Karcroft sees him looking and immediately rolls up his sleeve. And of course, Carcroft thinks that Harry didn't say anything because he was trying to hide, you know, he's putting it under the table, very discreetly showing Snape, because what they're discussing is the stirring in this forest that they have. They both have the dark mark, and they both feel the stirring of Voldemort, as they should. Of course, Voldemort is getting stronger. So Harry sees that, and Harry knows that that is what they are they are discussing. So it is an interesting development there. The big moment here, the most important, you know, theme that I want to get out of this is Harry's growing mistrust of Karkarov. Because he knows that there is someone in the school who is out to get him. You know, some put his name in the goblet, someone's been doing all these kind of mysterious things, something has been happening, and Harry doesn't know what or who. But Karkarov is naturally a front runner. Everyone's been warning him of, you know, Karkarov, the former death eater, the former this, the former that. And for good reason, I mean he was, after all, all those things. But I mean, especially going back and reading it, it's very clear that Karkarov is like the biggest, you know, r red herring in the history of literature. But I mean, your first time through, it's like, oh yeah, he's like, he's definitely up to something. And we're not wrong, he is, you know, he was a dead theater and he was doing something, but it wasn't the he wasn't the person that Harry was uh like it wasn't the person that Harry had in his sights. So anyhow, Harry is growing suspicious, and that suspicion is going to be very important for the uh these these next coming uh chapters. Because we're we are about to embark on kind of the main section of this episode, and that is to close some loops and to set us up for the last episode. So we're kind of this is that was like the beginning part of episode nine, and we are now kind of entering the last part, the uh uh a very important part of episode nine. So this is going to be uh a very important moment. So let's move on.

The trio go to Hogsmeade and Sirius tells them everything about Crouch’s past

So this final part of the episode begins with Hogsmead. Sirius was promising that they'd meet at Hogsmead at some point, but finally it is happening. So the trio go to Hogsmead and they find the great black dog, and together they go up, they make that little hike up to a little cave where Sirius has been hiding, living on rats. Lovely spot, really lovely, five stars on Airbnb, that's for sure. But what they discuss is important, and this is kind of the beginning of the end of the episode here, is that is Crouch. Crouch is gonna be kind of the defining figure of of this episode. So what they discuss is, first of all, what the heck's going on with the with the tournament, you know, how everything's going, and they're gonna keep discussing Karkaroff is another important uh topic because he is the he is the suspect. Harry's uh suspicion is growing by the by by the moment, and especially because he saw, you know, a glimpse of the dark mark and he said, seriously I think he has a dark marker on his own serious as well. Well, not surprised, you know, death eaters have dark marks, and Karkarov was a death eater. So that's kind of confirming Harry's suspicions and it only adding more uh fuel to the fire. So Karkarov is definitely looking like a prime suspect at this point. But uh the most important part they discuss is Mr. Crouch. So Mr. Crouch, again, like I said, defining you know figure in these final uh moments of of the episode. Mr. Crouch, as of late, has been very ill. You know, he's been taken ill and hasn't been showing up to meetings, and Percy's kind of been his his his envoy for we don't know how long, but we know that it's being covered up, that's for sure. And Sirius tells Harry Ronderminey the backstory. You know, he was doing so well, he has such a promising career, he was the next minister for magic. It was him. He was the next one. But his whole family fell apart when his son, Barty Cratcher Jr., was accused and convicted of being a Death Eater. Scary. Really scary stuff that was. I mean, really, really awful. So it is it is a very scary situation. Uh, and I wanted to set this up because in a few moments we will be in Dumbledore's office with the pensive. So we we kind of get that backstory, we understand what's what's going on. I don't want any flashbacks uh during this scene because we are gonna get a flashback in its in its entirety later on. So Harry tells the trio what the heck is going on with Mr. Crouch. And then they discuss the fact that he hasn't really been seen very much, and it's definitely a little awkward and kind of strange that he hasn't been there because he, of course, is supposed to be a judge, you know, he's supposed to be there and doing things and being involved, but he's really none of those, and he's not showing up to his job, like something is going on, something is definitely going on, and Sirius confirms that. So that is an important part of their discussion. When they get back from Hogsmeade, so they say goodbye to Sirius, they promise to send him some food, uh, and then they uh get back from Hogsmead and they go to the kitchens because they want to get some get get Sirius some food. So they they they go to the kitchens and they find Dobby and they say, Alright, Dobby, we want to make a little basket to send to a friend, and of course, in no time it's ready. But Winky is there again, and Winky is in even worse shape, if that's even possible. And she has again been drinking butterbeer, and she's not in a very good way. And she is saying she wishes you know she could serve her master better. She's talking, of course, about the Crouch family. We don't know who. Uh I mean, we assume it's Mr. Crouch at this point, but it's like she's referring to uh Mr. Mr. Tennant at this point as well. Uh Da David Tennant, of course, being Barty Crouch Jr. So, of course, Winky is a Big clue as to who, you know, uh what the heck's going on with this whole Barded Crouch thing, but we don't know it yet, so it's important that we go down to the kitchens and talk to her, and she keeps talking about Mr. Crouch and and you know all that. So, not not very good, but they bring the basket up to the Owlry and they send it off to Sears, but the Fred Fred and George are also there, and they are uh they are clearly also sending a letter, but they're being a little secretive about it. And of course, this is when they're they are uh guess sending a letter to Ludo Bagman because to because they are, you know, he's been avoiding them and they he owes them a lot of money from the bet that they made at the Quitch World Cup and he gave them uh leprechaun gold, which of course vanished uh and moments after the uh cup ended. So they've been trying to track him down for uh for a long time now. And this is kind of part of that saga. And I I I like the detail in the book of how they're they're kind of both being secretive, and I I also like how um like I think whoever was holding the um envelope, you know, he was tilted just just the right way, his thumb was over the right place, so Harry couldn't see who it was to. And I like the detail how uh it was written in the book, you know, whether he meant to or not. So it's you know, it's the very shifty situation. But Fred and George also asked Harry on Hermione, well, you guys have a basket of food, why are you sending that? And they don't, you know, maybe they say, oh, just just to a friend. And they both agree, both both parties agree, let's just go our separate ways. Let's just do our business and go our separate ways, which I like that detail a lot. So, and we will actually be going to the Allery later, and I will discuss the significance the uh the significance of the Allery uh when we when we get there. But just note that it is important, it's important that we go here. So they send that off to Sirius. Uh and there are okay, so so so Sirius is uh you know has his food and they are the trio now return. Uh so we have yet again we have another important moment to discuss. So let's move on.

Moody, Crouch(es), and Karkaroff all implode

Okay, so to finish out this episode, we have kind of kind of a crazy sequence of events, so we're gonna go through a lot uh in these next few minutes. So, after they send the letter to Sirius, our next moment is we kind of skip ahead a few a few weeks. So they've been living, they've been preparing, they've been doing all these things. Uh and after Easter, it's uh an evening after Easter, the champions are called down to the grounds. And they are brought down to this this these hedgerows. You aren't quite sure what it is, but they uh Luda Bagman says that this is the third task. And in a moment they all kind of recognize it as such, and he says that this is going to be a maze. And he still points at all the hedgerows, and they're going to be uh growing very high, very high indeed, and it will be a maze for the contestants for the four champions, and at the center of the maze will be the Tri Wizard Cup. So that's he that's that's how he describes it, and just like that, the third task kind of begins. Because when Harry returns, they have to start preparing. So I'm not gonna explicitly mention it, but in between all these scenes, in between all these moments, Harry begins learning spells. And this is important because these are the spells that are gonna serve him very well with the order, uh, with the DA, and then as his uh days on the run begin, he will be also using a lot of these spells to escape from Death Eaters and uh for fighting Death Eaters uh as the uh years stretch on. So that is an that is an important part, but again, I won't be mentioning it because it's not a super, super important part of the story. So, the champions are brought down, they learn about the third task. As they're walking back, Crumb wants to talk to Harry. So Crumb pulls Harry aside, the rest of them go on, and uh Harry, because Crumb wants to ask Harry a very important question. He says, he asks Harry, are you and Hermione romantically involved? Because Crumb has read the articles and he's interested in Hermione and he doesn't want you know anything that and uh something to get in the way of that. Of course, Harry clears it up, says, No, no, no, not at all. Uh and this is an important moment because Crumb is a person. You know, he's a person and he cares about things, and he thinks has things that he likes, things that he that he that he doesn't like, and I want to see that in him. Uh, and I want to see him kind of side with Harry in a sense, like like all this drama is unnecessary, and you know, he's kind of annoyed that Hermione, because of course he cares about Hermione, and he's annoyed that all these uh, you know, his that that that her name is kind of getting dragged through the mud here, so I want to see that moment with Crumb and kind of recognize that in him. So they they had they have that conversation, but before they can kind of end, they hear something in in the forest, because they are walking back near the forest, they hear kind of a stumbling, maybe a voice, and they gotta go around and they see to their shock, it's Mr. Crouch. But he's not in his right mind. He's clearly very disheveled, he's he's cuts and bruises, and he is missing his bowler hat, and something is off. Like his head, there's there's some light in his eyes, or something not quite right. Like he he doesn't really know what's going on. He's talking to himself, but he's also talking to someone else who isn't there. He thinks that Percy is there, and he doesn't know what's going on, he doesn't know what's happening, and he kind of doesn't really see Harry. Like he doesn't really see what's like in front of him, and he is clearly out of his mind. Something happened to him. He has a moment of of of lucidity, and he goes up to Harry and says, Find Dumbledore, find Dumbledore. That's the only message he can get across. So Harry is kind of in a panic. He he says to Crumb, like stay here, I guess. And Harry runs off to try and get Dumbledore. He he runs up to his office, he says, Dumbledore, Dumbledore, come quick. It's Mr. Crouch. So he and Dumbledore rush down to the grounds, and when they get there, all they find is Crum, who has been stunned. He is he is stunned, and Mr. Crouch is gone. So they don't know what's what's going on quickly. Uh more people arrive on the scene. We have Hagrid, uh, Karkarov, Moody, they all arrive, and they are in a in a bad way. They're all talking very angrily, and of course, Karkarov, this is another moment of uh us our our suspicion of Karkaroff growing because he blames Harry, says, Oh, it's all Harry's fault. Harry was doing something, it was messing it up, like whatever it was. Of course, I don't think it would be silly for Karkarov to blame the stunning of Crumb and Crouch and all that on Harry, but he somehow like calls the fact that Harry ran away, that's his fault, and so all this could have happened. You know, something like that. So Karkarov, anyway, the bottom line is we don't like Karkarov. He is trying to get Harry. It is clear that Harry is in his sights as as uh an an enemy. So this whole thing, it is it is action-packed. Truly action-packed. And after all this, I mean Crumb Crumb's okay, and they set out a search party to go look for uh look for Crouch, and so Moody brings Harry into his office, and the trio's also there, Harry, Ron and Hermione also come, and they they talk, they talk about what just happened and all that, and they also talk about Karkaroff because Harry is his suspicion of Karkarov is growing by the moment. First, you saw his dark mark in that intense discussion he had with Snape in Potions class. Now Karkaroff is blaming him for all these things that are going on, for all these I'd for these disappearances, and suddenly Mr. Crouch appears after having been missing from his job for weeks and then he vanishes again. Something is going on. Moody warns Harry to stay away from Karkaroff. So again, we hear that warning stay away. He is the big bad. Oh gosh, it is. It is getting intense. Now we have Divination. So after that conversation, Harry is sitting thinking about this whole situation in Divination. But it is so hot. So he's going through the class, but so the important part of this scene is the dream that he has. So he's going throughout the class, he's thinking about what's going on, all these people, all these accusations, all these mysterious things on top of all of his preparation and his nervousness for the third task. I mean, things he feels it are ramping up. And he's thinking he's like his the heat of the room and the sense, and uh it's just like he can't quite keep his eyes open and divination. And he has a dream. He has a very chilling, very chilling dream where he's flying on the back of an owl. Flying through the graveyard, flying across he's at at night. He flies through a window, and he sees that Voldemort is sitting in that room with Peter Pettigrew. They are they're discussing something that he is dead. We don't know who who the he is. He is dead, uh and and you know, they must get Harry, they must kill Harry, and you know, they just they they have to find him. And Harry is getting uh Harry is kind of watching from from the owl's perspective, and in a you know, I kind of want the audience's heart to stop in an instant because the owl's head is gonna uh not not the owl, Voldemort is kind of turned to look at the owl and kind of almost like he knows that Harry's there, and then Harry's gonna jolt awake and he's been clutching his scar. It's it's been it's been painful, he's been writhing, and the class is like, what the heck's going on? He gets up and it kind of almost half in a daze, he kind of runs back to to to Dumbledore's office because he has to share this, share this, to share this knowledge, but when he gets there, he hears voices, he hears that there are people there talking, and Moody opens the door because of course Moody can see Harry, and of course it's Fudge, Moody, and Dumbledore clearly discussing the goings-on of the past few days. Man, it's been intense. So this is a this is a important scene. So Harry walks in, uh Dumbledore walks them out, and Harry is suddenly alone in Dumbledore's office, where he sees the pensive. And I will say I like this pensive scene. I don't think there's any reason to go through it, but if in case just to jog your memory, Harry by accident, you know, goes into the pensive, falls down into the memory of the courtroom, and uh he watches Barty Crouch Jr. get sentenced to uh Azqaban. You see Barty Crouch Sr. doing the sentencing, we see him trying to escape. Uh it is a very intense situation. And of course, the most one of the more important parts is that Karkaroth is the one on trial. So he is the one on trial, he's being interrogated, he g he's he's giving names, he says Snape, and Dumble Lord defends him, and then he says Barty Crouch Jr. Uh, in a very dramatic turn of events, and Barty Crouch is put in chains, and uh I I like the detail of his tongue flitting uh as he's staring at his father, and that may be a detail that that they keep, or something like that. There's some telltale sign he is livid, he is clearly insane. Uh so we have that, and then Harry is pulled out, Dumbledore pulls him out of the memory, and Harry's head is swirling. I mean, truly his head is swirling. It is so hard for him to keep it all straight, and that's Dumbledore says, that's why I have this, you know, that's why I have this have this pensive. So he is clearly uh things are going on. Things are clearly going on. And truth be told, I didn't write an end. So this that that's the end of the episode, but I didn't write an end. I'm curious to kind of brainstorm what is the final moment of that whole uh of of episode nine. What do we want the the end to be? Immediately, what I thought was a scene like Harry goes out and sits by the lake or something like that, and he uh looks, you know, kind of out at the maze. That's what I was initially thinking. Uh so I think I I kinda like that idea. So the end of the episode is Harry finishes his conversation with Dumbledore, and then after that, he goes out to the lake, he sits down, and he just we just see him thinking. Thinking about the second task, thinking about uh that in relation to the third task, all of his preparation, and then of course Bardy and Crumb and Carcroft and Moody and Sirius and Dumbledore and Winky and all of these characters are kind of swimming around in his head. It is such a confusing web of characters, of stories, of conflicts, of allegiances. Who is aligned with who? Who is Harry's friend and who's his enemy? He just doesn't know. He just can't tell what is going on, and it is clear that there are many, many loose ends to tie up in the next episode. So that is the end of episode nine. Let's move on to episode ten, season finale. Here we go.

The trio discuss what just happened to open the last episode

Episode ten begins with Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Something simple. They have to discuss what's been going on, and they discuss, Harry tells them all about his trip in the pensive. But right, I mean, before that, so this this all is happening on the grounds. They are all walking the grounds talking about this. And I think just to draw a parallel to the first episode, I want the very first, you know, few seconds to be shots of the forest. It's it's, you know, you lovely. They're I think uh they're in summer at this point, right? It's uh the third task, so it's you know, very it's warm at this point, you know, they're uh not uh I would say late spring, probably. So they are enjoying it. Uh it is a really lovely time, and I want to hit the forest, you know, because of course that's how we began the first episode. And then we see the trio walking, discussing what's going on, and they are ready. This is the day of uh the third task. So Harry is kind of scared, but he still uh is his his mind is still roiling uh from all the things that they have been going on uh that they have been kind of experiencing over the past few days. So he talks to Harry, to Ron and Hermione about all that, and he wants to make sure that everything is straight before the third task. And they eventually are good to go. So uh uh after they had they have made that discussion, parents start arriving. And this is, I think, a uh this is such an important part of the third task, and I I'm so sad that we don't see it in the film. I want this to be a big part. All the parents are arriving, uh maybe even you know, alum alumni from Hogwarts are arriving, and also from other visiting schools and all that, they want to see all those things too. So, you know, people are the the the buzz is kind of happening, things are going on. And I think Bill and it's it's important that Bill and Mrs. Weasley come to see Harry. That's so nice of them. And a very such an important part of that is Mrs. Weasley and Harry. I want to have a scene of them walking around the grounds, you know, talking about all these things. Of course, Harry doesn't bore her with the details of Crouch and Karkarov and all that, and uh, but they I mean Mrs. Weasley talks about her days at Hogwarts and all that, and reminisces and you know points out spots and all that, like things to Harry, and they just have a nice moment together, just walking around, enjoying the sight. I think it's a it's a it's a very enjoyable afternoon. But that is just the preamble to the third task, and before we know it, here we are. I mean so many weeks we've been talking about the third task, and finally we have made it. All the parents are here, the band is playing. The band, I think the band is a very important part of the third task, I will say. The champions are ready to go, they are waiting. They kind of this is this is important, so both they they aren't all gonna be standing out there, they're all cannot kind of be waiting in a um holding room. I don't know, it's not that important where it is. But anyway, the important part of this thing is in that moment, they aren't feeling excited, they aren't really feeling the competition. They are all just terrified. That's all there is. That's all there is to it. There's no competition between them. They are they are not, and it's kind of it's kind of unspoken. Like, I don't want there to be too many lines in this thing, but they just they exchange like brief words of and it's almost like they're saying goodbye to each other. It's it's like it's this strangest feeling, and and it's it's unspoken, but it is clear that they're not, you know, wishing each other good luck, you know, I'll see you on the other side. They're just saying, like, you know, if we don't make it out of this thing, like just it was nice playing with you. Like, they're all just like it's the strangest kind of sensation, like they're all walking towards their doom. Of course, from our perspective at this point, the whole thing, you know, is set up and you know, yes, it's dangerous, but no one's gonna die. That's why they have it, you know, it's much, it's much safer than usual. That's what we're thinking, but it's strange that like the whisper, the undercurrent is that there is danger here, and they are not safe. They are they are not safe in the slightest. So it's a very awkward kind of situation that they're in now because they are they were competitors. In the first task, they were competitors, in the second task, they were all by themselves, isolated under the water, and now they're suddenly back together again, but they are I mean, they are the closest to each other that they've ever been, and yet the farthest from the outside world, maybe in their entire lives. So this is this is a heavy scene. This is very heavy. They hear the crowd, they hear the band, and it's just them in that room, you know, wishing each other good luck. It's like it's it's a quiet, it is, it is a really heartwarming and yet blood-curdling scene. I mean, really, it is. But they can't stay there forever, so eventually Ludo comes in and brings them all out, and uh Amos Diggory grabs Cedric and runs out and holds his hand high, and of course, Cedric is clearly very nervous, but Amos is very proud of his son to be competing, and all the champions are brought out, and then it's like the band's playing, everyone's cheering, it's so joyous, and this is where you know it's it's nice and loud, and the crowd and Dumbledore is giving a big speech about something, and the band and everything, and they hear they see the big maze, and it's like, ooh, scary the maze. They take their positions, and of course, Harry and Cedric are tied for first place. So Dumbledore says, You may enter the maze first. So, Harry goes in, he turns around, he sees Moody, who gives him a little point. I love that detail in the film. Moody gives him a little point, and Dumbledore clearly sees. So that is we shouldn't brush over that. That is a very important moment because that sets up when Harry gets back. Uh Moody, you know, it is Moody is helping him overtly now, and Dumbledore sees it. That's important. So anyway, keep that in your brand. Harry goes in, Moody Moody points, Dumbledore sees the band, the cheers, and then I love the film does this scene so well. The the the branches, everything, so everyone's cheering, everyone's cheering. He's Harry takes his first few steps in, and he looks back, and then all the branches meld together, they cross over the path. And just like that, it's like silence. It is it is the quietest Harry has heard in so long, since the lake. Since the lake, that's the quiet that that that that he's feeling right now. And it is he is cold and he is alone, and he is so so so so terrified. So that's the vibe of of the maze. Now, we don't have to go through the whole thing because you guys know what's going on. He sees the Dementor, who's the bogart who trips, and he does that, and then he has the whole the Sphinx who he has to answer the riddle, and um he hears the screams, he finds uh uh Crum. He watches Crum uh stupefy Fleur, and then Fleur gets kind of dragged under, and he tries to try to save her, and he calls the wind. Uh, he sends up red sparks and gets Fleur out of the challenge, and of course, Crumb is clearly uh under the Imperious Curse. He and Cedric uh they are there they're dueling, and then they eventually uh they they subdue Victor Crumb, so he's out of the the challenge, and then it's just Harry and Cedric, and a path opens up, and they see in the distance a glimmering, shining blue golden cup. It is the Tri-Wizard Cup. They look at each other, and I I like this scene. I like this scene, but here's man, there's just there, I here's okay, I have a lot of thoughts about this. So the way it is in the film is the the the branches open up, they see the cup, they are running to it, and then uh there's a huge spider, huge acromantula. I I'm I'm not sure if that's what it is named in the book, but that is of course what it is, is guarding it. So Harry gets picked up, they get thrown around, they get everything, and eventually they're they have an opening, and they both uh grab it and then they're both sent away. That's that's what it is. Uh in the film, it's slightly different. I don't like it in the film too much because uh they are clearly competing and they're ripping each other's shirts and they're running and trying to trip each other, and then eventually Cedric gets taken by the roots of the maze and is just Harry running, and then he has to make a choice between the cup and Cedric, and he chooses Cedric, and then they go to the cup together. I mean, I I like parts of those. I like parts of those. I think the whole part I'm okay, here's here's what I like. I don't I I like the fact that they are working together, and Harry. Chooses to save Cedric instead of win, and then they uh decide to take the cup together. I like that. I also like the spider, so I think that's another important part of this. The fact that the spider is part of it. Uh the roots, I I don't even, I don't know. I think the spider just like that's like that's more on brand. So here's kind of the perfect combination. And I will say, I don't like the roots, and I don't like the competition. It feels wrong. They shouldn't lose sight of kind of where they are, especially with this huge spider next to them. I wouldn't be competing if there was an acromansula trying to kill me. Like, I don't know. I've I've been working together, so I don't like the detail in the scene of how it's just like it feels so scummy. Like in that moment, like they are so clearly like playing dirty or ripping each other's clothes off trying to get to this thing. Like, it shouldn't be that way. I really don't think it should be that way. They should be working together. That's what I really think. Because soon enough, uh, they are not gonna be working together. So I want to have that that um dichotomy as soon as possible. So uh they they run towards the cup together, but the acromantula gets him, and they it's holding him up in the air. It grabs Cedric and cuts him and grabs Harry, pulls him up in the air. Cedric saves Harry, and then Cedric is up, and Harry has an opening to grab the cup, but he doesn't do it. He looks back at Cedric and he frees Cedric from from the Acromantula who recedes back into the darkness. Maybe they got a limb or they they they they burned it or something. Um so I uh I hope uh that that all the creatures in in the maze will recover. But alas they do have to save uh Cedric. So he is saved. Uh and just like that, they are standing in front of the cup. And I also don't like in the scene in the film how the wind picks up like it does uh and uh to get flur and it's like there are there's some kind of time pressure. No, I don't like that. I don't want there to be time pressure, I want them to be standing there, you know. And then Cedric says, take it. You know, that is another important part. Cedric is a stand-up guy, he says, You had a chance to win, and you saved me instead. You deserve it, take it. And then Harry just says, No, I I I I don't want it. I wasn't supposed to be here anyway. You made it, you take it. And they just they just can't, they're just standing each other looking at each other, and this is such a moment of connection. We've had, I think Cedric, it's it's not a secret. So let's let's pause for a second. It is not a secret that Harry and Cedric are close, and that they are maybe the closest champions, and that as the story's been going on, they've been getting closer and closer. Ever since that moment where Cedric helped Harry up after taking the Porky to the Quiddish World Cup at the very beginning of the book, ever since that moment, their relationship has been nothing but good. Because Harry has been jealous of him because of Cho, but if anything, that's just like Harry sees himself in Cedric. Like that's that's who he wants to be. So it's it's it's a good relationship, you know. I think I think it really is. And they've been giving each other hints about tasks and they've been helping each other, and it is just I just and that's why I don't like wow how in the film they are competing and they forget themselves when running for the cup. I I hate that moment because they are they are come they are they are working together and it took them until the third task to see it. And finally they are they are together in this maze and they are forging this path together, and they choose now, they are standing staring at the Quidditch uh the Quidditch World Cup. The the the Tri-World the the Tri-Wizard Cup. They saved each other, they both had a chance to grab it, but they didn't. They stick, they, they, they, they stuck together until the very end, and here they are. Here they are, and I want I want this moment, uh, another goal of ours was this was personal moments. This is just about as personal as you can get, because we are seeing, and of course we we know this, and this is maybe why this moment is so important. Cedric in a few moments is going to be killed. This is these are his last moments on earth, and he is choosing to be fair, and he's choosing to be kind, and he is choosing the spirit of the competition over victory and eternal glory. And I am for I will forever admire Cedric for for making that choice, and I'll forever admire Harry for for choosing to save Cedric over again taking that glory for himself. So that is why I like the acromantula, I don't like the roots, and I hate the competition. They are working together, and now here they are. Their relationship, they're working together, they have brought each other here, and now they are both staring at the cup, and they say, Let's take it together. Let's let's let's take it together. And they do. They they they have to see one, two, three, and they both grab the cup and they get sucked away. And we realize something's going on. So just like how they did uh with the boot on So Ted's Hill, they all grab the pork key, they both grab it, then it gets sucked up, and then we cut to black. And now the fun begins. Now the fun begins, alright? Let's move

We’re back in the forest in Albania

on. So the cut to black after they grab the pork key. Where do we open? Not the graveyard. No, no, no. We go back to the forest in Albania that we opened the very first episode on, that dark, brooding forest. We don't know where, we don't know when, but we but we clearly recognize it. And in that forest, in the beginning of this season, we ha we saw Voldemort arrive in his tattered dark form, and that's where we that's where we begin. We see Voldemort, but not necessarily how he how he becomes, but it's this fragmented form, because this is we are now in the moments right after the Philosopher's Stone, where Voldemort fled and he is now weak. And here is what we do. We spend the next few minutes, we follow him. So we see Peter Pettigrew stumbling through the forest looking, and finally he finds him. This this this crumple, like he's like half-formed, like just just not not okay. Voldemort is not okay, you know. So Wormtail kind of scoops him up and and carries him away, and we follow him. We follow his journey over the next few years. Mind you, not very closely, you know, we aren't going scene by scene here, but it's it's it's a montage of of the next few years. We see you know him him slowly get stronger and slowly, you know, control and kill and steal and move from house to house and slowly get stronger, slowly begin to to to do his own magic and gain his power back. And then we see him move to Riddle House. So we see him sit, you know, get get placed. Uh Pettigrew puts him in the chair for the first time, and they turn on the light in the house, and we we assume that uh I I I see this this shot very clearly. Instead of so we saw this from the other side, from Frank's window up at the Riddle House, the light turns on. We saw that. Uh, but now what I want to see is uh we have Pettigrew who puts Voldemort in the chair, and then we c we uh show we see the window of the riddle house on the village, and we see uh uh Frank. Like we we don't see him, but we see kind of his cottage in the distance, and then the light turns on in the room, and we know that that was the very moment. We know that Frank is watching and is is is now coming. So we follow that scene, we see Voldemort kill Frank from his perspective, we see Crouch talking to Voldemort, and they're they're they're making plans, they're making plans, and then eventually we we uh reach a moment. We don't know when this moment is, but but we reach a moment, and somehow we know that it is time, something is time, it is time to finally make an appearance. So, Pettigrew grabs Voldemort, wraps him up. Of course, Crouch is long gone, he he left many, many uh months ago. Pettigrew and Voldemort walk out of the riddle house and see Harry and Sedgric with the cup. Cedric is is pointing his wand at Pettigrew saying, Who who are you? Who are you in Voldemort? And uh uh Voldemort says to, of course, the famous, we better have this line in there. The famous kill the spare. And Pettigrew obliges and kills Cedric. This is this is the first real up close Avada cadaver we've had on a person. Of course, Moody showed it to us on the bug in the beginning. Harry's scar is pounding. He he doesn't he he sees this bundle of rags and he knows, he knows who that must be. Cedric is lying dead on the grass. Harry runs up, and now we're kind of shifting back to Harry's perspective. So for for the past, let's say, five minutes, we were with Voldemort, tracking him, following his journey, and then he we are uh uh we are looking from his perspective, not his eyes, but we are following the story from his perspective as he orders Pettigrew to kill Cedric, and then Harry runs against the blinding pain in his head, he runs to Cedric, and that's kind of the moment we switch back to Harry. Cedric is is lying dead. He is he is, and this is a moment that is going to haunt Harry for years to come. Harry is is like speechless. He can't believe what he just saw. I mean, it is it is incredible. But Harry doesn't have time to react. He he looks at Pedigrew, he fumbles for his while, but he's too late. Pettigrew disarms him and and and brings him up to the gravestone where that big grim reaper with the huge scythe wraps its arms around him and holds him tight. Harry can't move. He is trapped in this grave. And I uh I this is a detail. This that that set, that uh huge tombstone uh with the grim reaper and the scythe is in the Harry Potter TV. Uh it isn't it will be in the TV show. It is in the uh studio tour in Leaviston. It's over a doorway, I think. Very cool. It is really scary, so I'm looking forward to seeing that uh in in the TV show. So Harry's trapped, and then we have the famous the graveyard scene. We are here. Dumbledore has has been uh wondering how this is gonna happen. The ministry has been uh sensing, hearing rumors, hearing disappearances, and finally, this is kind of the culmination of all that. We are finally here at the graveyard where it is going to happen, where Voldemort is going to come back. So we go through the whole uh situation. We have our ingredients. We have flesh, blood, and bone. Of course, flesh of the servant willingly given. Uh Pettigrew cuts off his own hand, and this scene should be gruesome. It should be terrifying. I mean, really terrifying. So uh Cedric is dead. His hair can't uh there's pain in his head, there's Cedric dying, there's Pettigrew, you know, making this concoction. Pettigrew cuts off his hand, flesh of the servant willingly given. He cuts off his hand, it falls into the cauldron, and it bubbles and steams, and the fire crackles underneath. And then he says, uh bone of the father unwillingly taken. He gets the bone, who we will later know is is of course Bartycrat Sr. He drops the bone into the cauldron, and it still bubbles even more ferociously still. And then uh he he turns to Harry, and of course, blood, blood of the enemy, the most important, most important ingredient. Harry uh Pettigrew draws out this dagger, goes to Harry, and we should see this this point cut into his skin, gouge this, this, this gush of blood from him. And with his knife, Pettigrew grabs part of this blood, this, this, this, his, his dagger's dripping in Harry's blood. And Harry barely notices the pain because his scar is pounding, pounding, pounding, getting worse and worse and worse. Peter Pettigrew, he holds, his hand is shaking, his other hand, his stump is clutched to him, he's holding his dagger over the cauldron and shakes some drops into the cauldron, and that's the final greeting, and it begins to broil, and and there's steam and the fire and everything. It is just, it is becoming even more and more, and clearly it is it is activated, it is ready. Something just happened. So Petigrew quickly he goes over, he is shaking, he is, he is, he is so fearful. He gets Voldemort, he he he he gets Voldemort, he casts away this this wrapping that that Voldemort was in, he holds him over the cauldron and drops him in. And this moment is so so important. I am looking forward to this moment like no other. I will say I love how they did it in the film, where he kind of bubbles and is this like strange figure and all that. Um But here's what I don't like. Here's what I don't like about the film is that he's kind of becoming like it's it's almost like so he's the collagen, so he's dropped in, it everything's bubbling, and then the fire and the cauldron and the potion of Voldemort, they're all kind of wrapped up in one big steaming cloud, and we we s we see this like roiling like figure, like a huge, like oversized, like grotesque chicken almost like breaking free from an egg. His limbs like kind of coming out and like his spine like growing up and his head like kind of elongating. It's a little grotesque, and not to say that the scene isn't grotesque, but it it makes him seem lesser than he is, because that p thing, that r boiling, writhing thing, I don't think that's that's not Voldemort. I see that and who he becomes a few seconds later. Those are two different things. What I would rather this whole transformation be is it's like we are seeing him in his true form. You know, like how in like old mythology, like gods and other like other, you know, mythical, very powerful beings, they don't like they will appear in human form, but that's not their true form. That's kind of what I'm going for here. And I don't think that grotesque, kind of writhing mass of flesh, that's not his true form. That might be, you know, who he is, who like his his character, you know, he is a monster, that's that's for sure. So if that's what Mike Newell was going for, then I would say that's correct. You know, he's not wrong, but it's not quite, I think, the spirit of Voldemort. And especially because this is gonna be the first time we see Voldemort in his true form. You know, this is uh this is we see the uh the actor, this is the first actor, uh uh this is probably his first day on set, you know, truly, uh, not with uh dots on his face and you know being out of someone's head or anything like this. Is his true first day on set, which is really exciting. So he is, you know, he has to be really locked in here. So this is a very important moment, and and so so okay, so all that to say, here's what I'm thinking. So let's let's let's go back to where we were. Pettergroove's holding Voldemort over the bubbling cauldron and drops him in. Voldemort goes under the water, and then the reaction starts happening. I like the fact how it all kind of gets rolled up into one, because what I don't want is like the reaction, so to speak, to happen in the cauldron, and then Voldemort just like climbs out. No, no, no, no. I like how they did it in the film where the whole, you know, shebang is kind of Voldemort. So he is dropped in, and then it all kind of kind of the the lines between potion and Voldemort and fire and kind of air and ground, it all kind of becomes blurred, kind of, you know, because they're they're essentially creating life. They're essentially they're there, they're breaking a magical law, in a sense. Uh so they, you know, this is clearly magic, unlike anything Harry has ever seen. So the cauldron, everything's kind of bubbling together, and it's it's not necessarily like it's it's kind of a amorphous, like we can't quite see what's going on, but it is a dark, dark cloud. And here is uh here's exactly what I'm envisioning. So if we are going with this idea that we are seeing Voldemort in his most pure form, in his truest form, all I am envisioning is it's not necessarily a snake, it's not necessarily a skull, but there is something in that cloud. There is some evil, it is this black, kind of dark, you know. I I mean think of think of like when when the you know uh I think a great example is somewhere between uh in think of the Half-Blood Prince, the open okay, this is like kind of a tangent. The opening scene of the film in the Half-Blood Prince, we have the skull kind of coming out of the clouds. You remember that? And then the Death Eaters kind of in their black smoke flying out of the of the skull. That's the opening of uh Half-Blood Prince. Those that that kind of texture, those colors, that's what I'm envisioning for this. Because you could, you know, you could say that when the Death Eaters fly, when Voldemort flies, you know, it's this it's it's in this dark this dark cloud. And um, you know, it's like it's like he is he is in his purest form uh when that's happening. So I like that that idea that we are seeing him in his purest form. So this this cloud, it's like it's like, you know, this this b black kind of just it's sharp, it's it's all that. It's it's like it's also like think of the horcrux in in the locket. Um when Harry and Ron decide to to destroy it in in the film in uh uh Deathly Hollows when uh Harry opens the locket and this like huge black like it's like it's almost like very it's unnerving to look at because it's like roiling and there's like parts coming out of it, but it's like not a thing. It's just like it's just there and it's horrifying. It is a horrifying thing that they are staring at. That's kind of the idea here. And slowly it like condenses down like like a like a collapsing building. It's like falling in on itself. But it's not necessarily kind of jolting and awkward because Voldemort is anything but it's like collapsing in on itself, like like some some hydraulic press, like it is unbridled, just pure dark energy that is like almost lovingly, kind of like Dementors. You know, I I we were talking about um the those wonderful descriptions of Dementors, how they would love like in the book, the word lovingly, they would lovingly pry the hands away from their prey. It's it's almost like we're watching that happen, like this cloud is condensing down, kind of getting pushed into limbs, kind of getting pushed into this form. And eventually you kind of see this this face appear. And I I kind of like the idea of it of him kind of being built from like the bottom up. So we kind of see like a foot step out, and we kind of like the leg and the next foot and like things kind of getting built, and then we kind of see his fingers coming together and his fingernails getting, you know, sharp and long, and you know, kind of moving up, and we see his torso, and he's so thin, and he's like it's he's clearly a human form, but he's almost inhuman. And then at the same time, I do like uh in the film, I like how the robes appear on him, like like it's like a cloud that kind of you know, like a like a um condensation almost around him. I like that part. So we see his body appearing, um, and then of course, like the um uh more of the cloud kind of condenses around him, and in almost like condensation forming on like a leaf, his robes kind of are pressed around him. Big black billowing robes, and of course the last part of him is his head. It's like it it it builds up this jaw, these teeth, and that's kind of what I want to see is we see his teeth, we see his like his his his tongue, and again, he's human, but he's not, he's not quite human. We get that sense, and we see kind of like like pieces like constructed, and then of course the nose, the flat snake-like nose, and his his his his eyes are closed, and we see his his head is stretched bright, you know, white, pale, sickly head, and eventually he's he's fully formed, his eyes are closed, and his eyes shoot open, and they are bright, shining red. I refuse to accept that uh his his eyes were not red. No, no, no. His eyes are red. That is a bookism that we are absolutely keeping. Uh I also like the pointed toenails, I will say, uh, which we see in the scene as well. So that is a transformation. Boy, oh boy, is it going to be intense because I want Harry is going to be like we are seeing the darkest wizard of all time. Well, not of all time, but you know, of the past the darkest wizard of their century, you could say. You know, he he and Grindelwald are the dark wizards of the past hundred years. And Harry's looking at him. This horrible, horrible creature. And again, hopefully that uh that that actor has quite a uh quite a task uh uh ahead of them. I am looking forward to seeing it. And then we have that that whole graveyard scene. So, man, I will say I do love uh I I do love the graveyard scene. So Voldemort asks for Pettigrew's hand, of course, Pettigrew offers the stump, but he says no other hand, grabs the dark mark, presses it, and I kinda like uh the the idea that it almost hurts when he when it's pressed, because it's like an like a sensation that they haven't felt for so long, and that the the death theaters are summoned. And I will say these Death Eater masks, we we we talked about this uh in w when the Death Theaters were in at the Quiddish World Cup. They're just not it. These these these Death Theater costumes are just not it. Very cliche, the hoods, like the the big the pointed hoods and the skull like half masks, no. Next film, we've got those sick costumes of like those like like metal, like like black and silver are kind of their their colors, and these really cool masks, those costumes are awesome. And I will say I don't mind if they change them up a little bit, but first of all, be consistent and make them like they're like like the next book costumes. So anyway, the the Death Theatres appear, and we hear Voldemort's voice. His voice, I think Ray finds is I think his voice is one of the things that, first of all, it's it's it's great. It's it's so it's so good. But especially for this first few moments, I think he's a little too enthusiastic because I think Voldemort shows his enthusiasm with his venom. Like he's he's a snake. You know, a snake doesn't jump up and down and say, 13 years it's been since you've been here. Like, no, uh he hisses his words, it's like it's sharp almost to your ear. But still it is so sweet, it's so sickly sweet, you know, listening to him. Because you we we can hear Tom Riddle kind of in his in in in his voice. And he has his whole monologue, his whole spiel, 13 years it has been, uh, you know, he was broken, he he was the curse was refracted, whatever, and then here he is. And I do think the I can touch you now. I mean, that's just kind of iconic. Uh so I think something like that should happen where they um where where Voldemort makes a point and presses his thumb to Harry's forehead, and of course, uh Voldemort laughs and Harry Harry cries out in pain. So it is a uh quite a quite an exciting moment that. So he says, Let's duel, Harry, let's duel. So uh Harry is dropped down from the grave, he grabs his wand, and they have the whole situation. Voldemort, first of all, Voldemort is clearly playing with him. He forces Harry to bow, and Harry, the second they start, he runs away. And I I like the moment in the film how Voldemort says, like, oh, run, run and hide like your parents did, and Harry finds the courage because Harry's looking in the face of death, like he thinks he's gonna die, just like Cedric. Voldemort's just playing with him at this point. So Voldemort says, Jai, like, hide like a coward, just like your parents. Harry's resolute, he sets his jaw, he gets up, he faces Voldemort, he casts spells, he's he's he's casting everything he knows, he's using every spell he has, but it is painfully obvious Voldemort is barely like Voldemort barely even notices the spells that Harry's casting. Because of course he is the most he's so so so powerful. But eventually, it gets intense. Like maybe Harry gets gets a gets a a good one off, and Voldemort's like, oh, interesting. But uh, and then finally Voldemort loses patience, and you can sense the satisfaction the years he's been waiting. He raises his wand, he says a voter cadaver shoots a spell at Harry, jet of green light, but Harry, Harry meets him. Harry meets him in the middle, and this is uh this is kind of a more you know, Voldemort's like, oh, like something's happening here, and Harry's desperation is keeping him alive. And first of all, it is clear that Voldemort's winning. I don't like how it's like Harry's skills almost matching Voldemorts, which of course in the end he does win, but it's not out of power, it's out of you know the the the influence of of the Priori Incantatum which will be enacted. So clearly Voldemort's much more powerful. That that that bead of light in the middle is making its way towards Harry, and then this this this dome, kind of threads of light come come out around him and form this dome, and they're kind of lifted to another hilltop. And Veta theaters are running towards them, and of course we have you know these puffs, these these smoke, these these figures kind of emerging out of this dome, and it's Frank and it's uh Bertha Jorkins and it's his parents who come out to see him, and they say, you know, they they say, Harry, like you're doing so well, you're doing so well. Uh Voldemort now is starting to lose uh control on this because it's like his power uh is kind of being like reflected back at him. All these spells are kind of coming back, and Harry now has the upper hand, and the bead is moving towards Voldemort, and and and it's it's this intense moment. And then his his parents tell him, Okay, break it. We will give you a few seconds, break it, you must get home. And of course, Cedric is also there. Sarah says, Bring my body back, bring my body back to my parents. Uh, and he is he is devastated. I mean, I I think if I were him, I'd be crying. Like, I'd be I'd I'd be showing a little more emotion. He was like deadpan. He was like, Bring my body back, bring my body back to my parents. Of course, I'm doing him a little dirty, but that's kind of the vibe I got. So anyway, he should be more like thinking of his parents, at least a smile, like a something to show that he's thinking of his parents. So Harry rips his wand away, the spell is broken, the bead of light vanishes, the dome bursts, and the memories, the the smoke figures coalesce, they swirl around Voldemort. Harry bolts, he runs away, he grabs uh Cedric, he the cup's too far away, Voldemort's coming, he says, Akyo, the cup flies towards him, he grabs it, and they are sucked back. Man, let's just take a breath, man, because that was that scene was crazy. That scene was nuts. Oof. Okay, so Harry was sucked away, and we are about to end this episode, okay? We are about to finally reach the end, and we are gonna go through this a little a little quicker because it is, you know, we know the ending. So, Harry was sucked away. You ready? Let's uh do this final part, let's end the season out strong. So, Harry bursts back into being, and he is back uh outside of the maze, he is in that that that that little uh entrance area. Cedric's Cedric is lying there, Harry is over him, the cup is next to them, the crowd bursts into cheers, everyone is screaming and yelling, yeah, they they they did it, they they they they they did it. And it is so joyous, and I I like this in the film of how no one knows that he that that that he's dead at first. Uh everyone is cheering, everyone's everyone's loving it, and then kind of slowly we see something like a kind of a realization dawn that Harry is crying over Cedric, who isn't moving. He hasn't even blinked, and kind of we see I think is it Cho maybe is the first one to notice because she's closest and she's probably paying closer attention to Cedric because I mean they were they were uh very very close. So she's she sees him and she screams this blood curdling scream. And here's okay, first of all, uh this moment is uh silent. There's no music, there's no sound effects, there's no nothing. There's just people breathing and talking. And it is it is like the heaviest weight on the in in the world was just dropped on the shoulders of everyone in the audience. And then Amos like he can't believe it. Amos cannot believe what he's seeing. He runs out from the crowd, and I I it is so well done. That that that actor is so good in the film. He he's he's yelling, he's screaming, you know, m he's he's he's he's really devastated, and I I think it comes across so well. I definitely want something like that. He's saying, My boy, my boy, you know, shouting into the night. It is really horrible to watch. And eventually, you know, uh Harry's like, he Harry can't leave him, Harry can't leave, such, but Moody has to like half carry him away, and it's important. Moody carries Harry up to the castle. Dumbledore notices. Moody sits him down, and this is where we kind of have all the final pieces fall into place. This is where we have our loose ends tied up. So they they begin to talk, and then Moody says, So how so how was it in the graveyard? And then Harry says, Oh, I don't think I mentioned a graveyard. And then he kind of looks, and that's the moment that we're like, okay, well, there we go. And then, of course, we have the whole reveal uh that that that it is Moody, you know, who's been serving him and who's been putting his name in and helping him, and you know, telling people little information and giving Harry uh an upper hand. And Harry is like, What? Like, that's crazy. And of course, all the while Moody is searching for Apologist potion and he just can't find it. He's he's kind of morphing and like his skin is kind of bubbling, almost like a uh parallel to Voldemort. And then uh Dumbledore, before Moody can get too ahead of himself, Dumbledore bursts in and stops Moody from hurting Harry. Uh, and I this is a very Michael Gambin scene, so I think Jonathan uh Lith Lithgow is gonna have to really channel that. He's very angry, and uh Harry notes this is like the most angry, the most powerful that um uh he's ever seen Dumbledore. And it's important that we see him that way because we just saw Voldemort come back. We saw the power, the the the majesty and the horribleness of a dark wizard, and now we get a little hint, you know, Dumbledore's got something in him too. That's kind of the uh message there. And then we have the whole interrogation scene where uh it is revealed, you know, eventually Moody becomes Barty Crouch Jr. again, and this is big shock. And uh Snape runs up and puts the Veritas serum in in his mouth, and they have the whole interrogation. We learn the truth of how it wasn't, you know, Barty that went to prison, it was his mother who got buried, and then he was uh under the invisibility cloak forever, and Winky was his keeper, and that was the whole deal. The Quitter's World Cup is that she was trying to get back to him and find him, but he got away, and she was always regretting that, and then Mr. Crouch, you know, how Moody found Mr. Crouch and killed him from uh because he didn't want him to expose his secret and all that, all the whole thing. So he was taken away. Uh, and then they found the real Moody at the bottom of the trunk. He's he's he's really not not doing so well. And Harry's reeling. He's taken to the hospital wing, and now we have kind of our final few uh final few moments here. There are there are three things that I want to uh talk about before we end this episode. Harry's in the hospital wing, and I think it's it's only right that we finish up the whole uh scene, the whole Rita, whole Rita sequence. Uh she has had quite the saga, and uh so there Harry's in the hospital wing, Ron and Hermione are sitting with him, and it's quiet, and I think I it's important that we see that it is quiet, it is sunny, it is a beautiful day, and Harry is just He can't possibly will himself to enjoy it because of all the things that he's just gone through. If if the second task like it's it's it's funny, now that I'm talking about it, the uh the trauma that Harry endured in the second task wasn't you know, it's how do I how do I put this into words? So, you know how I was talking about how Harry was having like flashbacks to the second task at at the beginning of uh of episode nine, where Ron was telling the story and how he was getting getting more impressive, more impressive, more impressive, and then Harry uh was kind of like looking off into space and remembering. We were getting flashes of the lake, flashes at the faces, you know, all that. It's almost like those were flash forwards. That's kind of the sense I'm getting now. It's like he was remembering the lake, but not necessarily remembering the lake, but fearing for the maze. That's kind of what I'm feeling now, is that all that buildup wasn't for the third task, it was for this moment. If Harry sitting in the hospital wing, kind of that that trauma that that he had, those memories weren't memories, but almost like visions of the future, you know, some small part of him. Though he though he didn't realize it, though we didn't realize it, when he was getting flashes back of the lake, he was getting scared, he was nervous, he was sensing he knew what was coming, that he was gonna have those same moments for the maze, and that's kind of what we're where we are now. So he's sitting there, he can't will himself to enjoy it, but on a later note, Hermione realizes, so they uh it's important, so they're they're all sitting there and they say, Well, Rita Skeeter's gonna have a field day, you know, but they they just can't decide how she's been bugging all their conversations, you know. Uh bugging, wink wank. It's important that they use that word, and then Hermione looks to the window, and she hasn't like she like has an idea, she looks at the window, and I could totally imagine, I can totally see see the scene playing out. Like she's like bugging, and she kind of looks out at the window and is like, bugging, what could that be? And then we are um there is a there is something closer to the frame that's out of focus, we're focused on Hermione, and then the focus shifts, and we see a beetle on the window. And Hermione like sees it at the same time, and we see uh we see her run up with the jar and grab the beetle, and then of course we know that that is that is Rita, which will be revealed later, uh as they're going back to the Hogwarts Express. So here's in the hospital wing, and then we have the heavy, heavy end to the year. Black flags, you know, black H's hung from the uh ceiling of the Great Hall, their their going-away feast, Dumbledore gives a speech. I I like Michael Gangman's uh performance in this scene. Gives a speech, you know, we lost someone today, and then of course he ends with Voldemort is back, and this is this is this is our setup, this is our setup for the next book, and it is going to be a crazy uh ride with that one, that's for sure. So he he he gives that speech, and everyone is just they just can't believe it. They can't believe what's happened. And he so so there you go, and then they they they go off. And here's here's the what I envision. As they're walking out to to the uh to the carriages, uh they so Hermione has the the the jar with the beetle in it and says, This this is her, she's an unregistered Annie Magis. And of course they're kind of shocked. Uh they really realize who Rita was, and they uh tell him not they they they Hermione has made it told her not to do anything else. So we we can close that loop quickly and quietly. And another really important uh detail is so Lemmy Lemme, this is this is the final scene we got here. They get in the carriages, and we don't draw attention to it, because that whole scene's gonna happen next book, but we see that these carriages are now not horseless, that there are black uh you know skeletal s horses, black like these, these, these kind of terrifying creatures uh dragging these these carts. They are they are the horses uh for the horse-drawn carriages, and they don't they don't notice them because like the focus really isn't there, and I don't want to have like a shot of them. I don't want to draw attention to them. It's kind of an Easter egg, really, that that they're there. Heron Hamini, they get in their carriage, and then it's this this is a uh a very uh a niche scene, but uh as when they arrived at Hogwarts. Do you remember that scene that we described where it was a very far away shot? It was a very long shot, the camera didn't move, it was a very wide shot on the carriages in the distance, the twinkling lights going up the castle at night as they were arriving, and we just see the huge castle, the lake, the mountains, and the uh the clouds at night. That's kind of that's we have that that scene again, that shot again, exactly the same shot, except the characters are going down, it's daytime. We see the castle, and we see these huge clouds in the distance. I mean, so much bigger, impossibly big, so much bigger than Hogwarts. Huge storm clouds gathering, ominous, you know, some some kind of signal maybe. Some kind of signal because there is there is much to come. There's much to come in this next year. So these these carriages make their way down the slope, back through the gates, far, far away from from from us. We're watching them, or we're watching the castle, we see these clouds. Just like that, we cut to black. And that is it. That is it. That is the end of season four, right there. Wow. What an episode. You know, I knew this is going into this, I knew this is gonna be long, but I'm like delirious. I haven't recorded for this long ever. Ever. This is the longest episode in the history of the show, and let me tell you, it was worth it. We are officially done with season four, and boy, oh boy, was it a good one. Man, if if you've been here since the beginning of season four, thank you so much for being here. If you if you're still listening to this, I hope you care a little bit about about what what you just heard. We went through so much of the story, so much evolution, and now we have three seasons to go. I'm not gonna do that thing where I split the last one into two. No, no, no, no. We're doing it all in one. But it's gonna be a big, a big few seasons coming up. So here, just to give you a little bit of a game plan, here's what I'm thinking. I think we we can't do ten episodes. Uh, that's way too little. I'm thinking we do twelve for the fifth, twelve for the sixth, and fifteen for the seventh. I know the Order of the Phoenix is is uh the longest, but I think we, you know, we are gonna have a lot of flashbacks, a lot of memories in the Deathly Hollows that that that warrants a few extra episodes. So this is this is gonna get intense. We are we are into the thick of it. We are we are into the main part of the story. Voldemort is back, all these are happening, and I and I truthfully am so excited to to go through this. Uh our next episode next week will be a in-between episode where we will uh kind of wrap up season four and set our goals and do everything we need to for season five, and then we will we will get into it from there. So that is exciting. I am looking forward to that. But before that happens, we've got four complete seasons. If you haven't heard them all, I would highly recommend you do. You've got a few weeks before we we begin season five, so you might be able to get through at least a few of those seasons. And of course, share this episode. I mean, I really don't know.
